Book excerpt: "This impressive study focuses on Africa, which has suffered hideous crimes. Yash Tandon’s case is a powerful one, and can be extended: The global class war that is institutionalized in the misnamed 'free trade agreements' is also a war against the traditional victims of class war at home. The resistance, in Africa and elsewhere, which Tandon describes here, is a source of hope for the future." —Noam Chomsky "A necessary and timely contribution which goes to the roots of the deep crises we face as humanity." —Vandana Shiva "... understand that 'trade is war' as Yash Tandon beautifully explains in this important book." —Samir Amin Globalization has reduced many aspects of modern life to little more than commodities controlled by multinational corporations. Everything, from land and water to health and human rights, is today intimately linked to the issue of free trade. Conventional wisdom presents this development as benign, the sole path to progress. Yash Tandon, drawing on decades of on-the-ground experience as a high level negotiator in bodies such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), here challenges this prevailing orthodoxy. He insists that, for the vast majority of people, and especially those in the poorer regions of the world, free trade not only hinders development – it visits relentless waves of violence and impoverishment on their lives. Trade Is War shows how the WTO and the Economic Partnership Agreements like the EU-Africa EPA and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) are camouflaged in a rhetoric that hides their primary function as the servants of global business. Their actions are inflaming a crisis that extends beyond the realm of the economic, creating hot wars for markets and resources, fought between proxies in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and now even in Europe. In these pages Tandon suggests an alternative vision to this devastation, one based on self-sustaining, non-violent communities engaging in trade based on the real value of goods and services and the introduction of alternative currencies.

Book How to Pay for the War

Download or read book How to Pay for the War written by Wilfrid Stokes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Pay, for the War: A Practical Scheme for Improving, Our Foreign Trade The following scheme for the formation of a new Government Department, viz., a Board of Industry, was first brought before a Meeting of tho British Engineers' Association at Manchester, on December 15th, 1914. The scheme has already met with a considerable measure of support from industrial and trade Associations, Chambers of Commerce and other interested bodies, who have been asked to appoint representatives to form a Joint Committee to consider and if necessary to amend the scheme before it is submitted to the Government. Members of both Houses of Parliament have also expressed approval and offered their co-operation. The present publication is made in order to enlist the sympathy and support of all who are interested in extending our foreign trade. Last year our exports amounted to nearly £600,000,000, and, if the results of the present proposal were to add only 10% to this figure the country would be benefited to the extent of £60,000,000, with the further advantages to shipping, transport and banking which do not appear in export returns. The cost of the proposed new Board of Industry would thus appear to be fully justified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The European War and Our Opportunity in Foreign Trade Despite the broad views and the keen appreciation of our needs on the part of some of our great manufacturers, mer chants, bankers and railway men, and the efforts of organiza tions such as the Illinois Manufacturers Association, and the Chicago Association of Commerce, however, the mass of our people and the majority of their representatives in Washington, have believed that we in this country were very little concerned with world commerce and the questions of international politics arising therefrom. The producers of our great staples grain and cotton - realized perhaps that their goods were destined eventually to go abroad, but their experience was confined to their relations with middlemen and bankers who purchased and financed their crops for delivery at, and ship ment from, the seaboard.
