Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War IT has been wisely remarked by a distinguished American statesman, that the commencement of the Mexican War was the opening of a new volume of American history. Nations, like individuals, are often borne along in their progress, without pausing to consider the particular acts which are to shape and control their future destiny; and perhaps there is no subject on which the public mind is less likely to act with caution and deliberation than on the momentous question of peace or war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War With Mexico, Vol. 1 of 2 A period of more than thirty years of peaceful intercourse withthe great nations of the earth had left the recent history of the United States without any great events of a military character at the commencement of the war with Mexico. The gov ernment of the republic commenced and prosecuted the war, having had little experience in extended military operations, and being at the outset in a measure unprepared. Book The Mexican War by an English Soldier

Download or read book The Mexican War by an English Soldier written by George Ballentine and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War, by an English Soldier: Comprising Incidents and Adventures in the United States and Mexico With the American Army The writers of both classes have "cast discreetly into shade" whatever would "offend the eye" of the readers they sought to appreciate. As a partial remedy for the evil complained of by the gallant officer above referred to, the publishers put forth the present volume. If it does not rise to the dignity of history, it at least partakes of that faithfulness of record and clearness of detail which give history its value. The author is manifestly superior to that class of his countrymen ordinarily found in the rank and file of an army, in intelligence, in education, in observation, in descriptive and narrative power, and in candor and liberality of sentiment. Something of foreign misapprehension, possibly some degree of foreign preference or prejudice, may be found in his pages; and it is by no means improbable that some of his criticisms upon men and events may be unjust; but there is throughout the volume an evident desire to be just as well as independent, both in criticism and in narration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War Between Mexico and the United States, Vol. 1: With a Preliminary View of Its Origin I have thought it proper to state in my introductory chap ter, thus much of the laws and system under which Mexico began her national existence - for laws modify the charac ter whenever they are not self-imposed. Let us now, for a moment consider the population which was subjected to the bad administration of such laws; and we shall then under stand better the character of the belligerents. Book Mexico in Peace and War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mexico in Peace and War Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico in Peace and War It was never intended that "Mexico in Peace and War" should be limited in scope to a mere "war book," although many months ago it was thought that war was imminent, and quite probable, before a solution of existing difficulties could be brought about, or before this volume could go to press. For several years the eyes of the civilized world have been directed toward Mexico because of the revolution of the masses against certain classes which had been fiercely waged. The American public seemed eager for details of this civil war, and such details were furnished by the daily press. Then came a demand for all kinds of information about Mexico. What seemed necessary to the situation was a popular, readable book that would embrace all the facts concerning this land of conquest, revolution and treasure. Such a history must necessarily be authentic and comprehensive. It was part of the plan that should war actually take place between the United States and Mexico ere its publication, allowance would be made in this history for the incidents and causes leading up to and into the beginning of such a war. In the event of conflict it would be only reasonable to expect that whether or not the opposing forces should be in actual conflict, or in a position of armed belligerency pending peaceful settlement, the ultimate solution would be long drawn out; and to postpone the volume for a "last word" of war developments would be to deprive the public of an immense fund of information never before issued in popular form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War Between the United States and Mexico: From the Commencement of Hostilities to the Ratification of the Treaty of Peace In the preparation of this volume, my main reliance, for the facts and details connected with the military operations, has been upon the official reports of the officers of the army, - *as well those occupying subordinate positions, as those at the head of columns or divisions. The narrative, proper, of the war, is preceded by a review of its origin and causes, written after a careful examination of the diplomatic corre spondence, and the various publications, of a public or pri vate character, that have appeared from time to time, calcu lated to throw any light on the subject. Download or read book For the Liberty of Texas Classic Reprint written by Edward Stratemeyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Liberty of Texas For the Liberty of Texas is a tale complete in itself, but it forms the first of a line of three volumes to be known under the general title of the Mexican War Series. Primarily the struggle of the Texans for freedom did not form a part of our war with Mexico, yet this struggle led up directly to the greater war to follow, and it is probably a fact that, had the people of Texas not at first accomplished their freedom, there would have been no war between the two larger republics. Book Address to the Veterans of the Mexican War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Address to the Veterans of the Mexican War Classic Reprint written by Charles Edward Pickett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the Veterans of the Mexican War The author of the following exposition was a soldier in the Mexican War, the field of such performance lying in California. A member of the Yerba Buena Volunteers, which Company he took a leading part in organizing, and was tendered the Captaincy, but declined it, preferring to serve as a private. The Company was recruited at this place, and acted, during the Winter of 1846-'7 under orders of Capt. J. B. Hull, of the United States sloop of war Warren, Hull being then titled "Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Department of California." The Company was not marched further than Santa Clara, and had but one engagement with the Hispano-California enemy, which, fortunately, proved bloodless; strategy, and a tender of the olive branch, securing us a victory. The hardest service rendered, was in standing guard, during the cold and rainy nights of that dreary Winter, in the outskirts of the little village of Yerba Buena, and scouting in vicinity - since, changing its name and somewhat grown. Though not attached to any Mexican Veteran Association, some members of the one here requested me to prepare an address for their anniversary, on the 14th of September, (taking of the City of Mexico by the American army in 1847); but such Association not having arranged for any public oratorical exercises, on that occasion, it is sent forth, somewhat amplified, to the Veterans throughout the Union, and to my fellow-citizens at large, through the medium of the multi-tongued types. Persons desirous of learning some condensed interesting history - a portion, hitherto, unpublished - and penned by a participant in much of it - should peruse this pamphlet. That it shall prove a valuable adjunct in aid of the Democratic party, must be attributed to the fact that the truth of history and glory of the American people, as revealed in its pages, lie upon that side. The two old parties should, like individuals, be judged by their general character and well established reputations - by their long antecedent records of actions and results. Settlement of the Oregon Question and war with Mexico opened a new volume in American history, of a grand and startling character. No speaker nor writer can treat upon that history without alluding to the position of such parties in it. But whilst the Republican speakers and writers are boldly falsifying this history, as well as assailing the whole proud record of the Democratic party, and defaming its illustrious representatives, anterior to our late sectional conflict, and so grossly misrepresenting the causes of that conflict, I rarely meet with the faintest defence of such record, or maintenance of the old Democratic creed. Instead, there has been a cowardly evasion of the subject, and an indirect admission of the justness of Republican allegations and arguments, false as they arc, by nearly all our side speakers and writers. Perusers of this pamphlet will find its author cannot be ranked among such lilly-livered defenders of its ancient faith, nor of those illustrious expounders of it.
