Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The category of “charity cookbook” is a favorite in American culinary history. Funds raised by sales of these cookbooks, with recipes donated by women’s groups and church societies, were used to aid a wide variety of local causes and charities. My Mother’s Cook Book belongs in this category—an excellent example of regional cooking styles of the post-Civil War Midwest. Several hundred recipes compiled by Ladies of St. Louis for the Women’s Christian Home include a complete range of dishes from soup to nuts, tending toward dishes “my mother” used, and handed down from mother to daughter. The ladies’ droll sense of humor is captured in the preface: “The recipes gathered in this priceless volume have been sent from all parts of the known world; several even from New Jersey.” Although the ladies are unnamed, a dedication by Mrs. E. F. Richards and the Misses Glover thanks all the contributors as well as local advertisers who aided the project (ads for merchants selling a wide variety of merchandise, including the “latest gems of fashion,” are included at the front of the book). This edition of My Mother’s Cook Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.

Book Recipes by Ladies of St Paul s P E Church Akron Ohio

Download or read book Recipes by Ladies of St Paul s P E Church Akron Ohio written by St. Paul's P. E. Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recipes by Ladies of St. Paul's P. E. Church, Akron, Ohio We may live without poetry, music, or art; We may live without conscience, live without heart; We may live without friends; may live without books ; But civilized men cannot live without cooks. and, though it is asserted that, like poets, cooks are born, not made, good cooking is largely the result of practical experience. It is the truest economy to concoct the given materials into dishes so palatable and so daintily served that waste shall be reduced to a minimum. Since, "in the multitude of councilors there is wisdom," may we be pardoned if we add another to the number of cook books already flooding the land, as all the formulae given in this compilation are obtained from ladies whose dainties are acknowledged to be most toothsome, and who, by this method, furnish the recipes for which they have often been importuned. The editors were troubled with un embarras des riches, and, perhaps the selections are not the most felictitous, but "to err is human." We tender our sincere thanks to the ladies of our town, and especially to those of other congregations who have responded to our requests generously. Book excerpt: As Americans rediscover their connection to food, some of our most treasured family recipes are making their way back to the table. These are not recipes that you can find in any standard cookbook. These recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, picking up the unique touch of each family member that has made them. Traditionally, these recipes are hard to come by. Only the most trusted friends and relatives are privy to them. To find these treasured morsels, The Church Supper Cookbook went straight to the local legends of community cooking: America's small-town cooks. We asked nicely (pleaded in some cases!) and were graced with the good fortune of more than 375 delicious, time-honored dishes from our country's best cooks. The Church Supper Cookbook is meant for home cooks who appreciate the value of the hard-to-find recipe served by a neighbor at a potluck or brought to a holiday gathering by a family member. Every recipe has a special flavor twist or clever cooking technique that makes it unique. Most recipes also include a heartwarming note from the cook. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine Marshall Gardiner, the editor of the first edition of the cookbook, was asked by a church member for all of the dessert recipes she knew how to make. It was 1900 and cookbooks for the home were rare. She decided that perhaps her other friends from church would also like to share recipes. She inquired and eventually gathered 1001 handwritten recipes from the ladies of Saint John's Episcopal Church, and then she compiled a cookbook for everyone to have. Included in the pages, the home cook can find recipes that range from tea cakes to squirrel stew, each one reflecting the personality of the woman who contributed it. Some of the ladies had traveled the world, while others had never left their home sate of Mississippi. Mrs. Gardiner valued and preserved their unique qualities by changing not a word, phase or measurement with any sort of conformity, creating a delightful adventure back to the turn of the 20th century.
