Book excerpt: Our Danish Connection is a collection of 72 short essays that originally appeared in ST. CROIX THIS WEEK magazine (permission obtained) under that heading from 2009 through 2019. It documents the surprisingly extensive legacy of cultural, architectural, and genealogical resources from 1733 as a colony of Denmark until its sale with the islands of St. Thomas and St. John in 1917 to the United States. The tragic use of enslavement of Africans brought here to work in sugar cane fields temporarily enriched the European owners but emancipation took place in 1848. The Danish imprint on the culture has led to a surprising friendship between the islanders and Denmark with many conciliatory initiatives and large tourism and scholarly interests from Danes, creating a mood of mutual acceptance and support unusual between a former colony and its owners. The book contains a translation into Danish of all the essays by the author Nina York , a native of Denmark and resident of St. Croix since 1976. The book is supported by the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society and the Danish West Indian Society of Denmark. We all share a love for this island as a special place to live.

Book The Danish Way of Parenting

Download or read book The Danish Way of Parenting written by Jessica Joelle Alexander and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International bestseller As seen in The Wall Street Journal--from free play to cozy together time, discover the parenting secrets of the happiest people in the world What makes Denmark the happiest country in the world--and how do Danish parents raise happy, confident, successful kids, year after year? This upbeat and practical book presents six essential principles, which spell out P-A-R-E-N-T: Play is essential for development and well-being. Authenticity fosters trust and an "inner compass." Reframing helps kids cope with setbacks and look on the bright side. Empathy allows us to act with kindness toward others. No ultimatums means no power struggles, lines in the sand, or resentment. Togetherness is a way to celebrate family time, on special occasions and every day. The Danes call this hygge--and it's a fun, cozy way to foster closeness. Preparing meals together, playing favorite games, and sharing other family traditions are all hygge. (Cell phones, bickering, and complaining are not!) With illuminating examples and simple yet powerful advice, The Danish Way of Parenting will help parents from all walks of life raise the happiest, most well-adjusted kids in the world.

Following in the footsteps of critically-acclaimed The Danish Directors (also published by Intellect), The Danish Directors 2 provides a practitioner’s perspective on the social, cultural, and economic milieus in which Danish film-makers have been able to develop their practice, and to thrive. With insider information about the making, marketing and distribution of award-winning films, and interviews with seminal directors such as Anders Thomas Jensen, Annette K. Olesen, and Lone Scherfig, The Danish Directors 2 allows readers entry into what might seem to be a forbidding body of work. Book The Connected Leader

Download or read book The Connected Leader written by Karen Joy Hardwick M.Div. MSW and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connection is the antidote—yet, many of us don’t know how to connect to ourselves compassionately in order to enhance self-discovery. Without this gift, we cannot connect—in a meaningful way—to a higher purpose or engage with others to ignite inspiration. With the help of Hardwick’s connection architecture, we can transform. By utilizing her strategies of connection, we can empower workplaces and relationships through the grace and grit, resilience and empathy that occur when our connection wiring is activated in healthy ways. Hardwick’s willingness to share her story of struggle and triumph—along with anecdotes from the boardroom and family room—help us to awaken, heal, and courageously lead. She synthesizes the emotional, spiritual, and relational, giving us permission to look honestly at how we do damage to ourselves and others while inviting us to live and lead from a place of true well-being. “The Connected Leader is profoundly important. Karen's written a guide that is at once both practical and actionable while vividly authentic and real. Using her own broken open heart, she shows how each of us is seeking presence and connection and that the best leaders, leading from a connected soul, create the conditions for a lasting sense of belonging.” —Jerry Colonna, author, Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up “Hardwick’s inspiring message is there’s a more fully human way to lead rooted in emotional, spiritual, and relational wholeness. Connected leadership is the way of the future. Highly recommended!” —Ian Morgan Cron, author, The Road Back to You

Book The Country Where My Heart Is

Download or read book The Country Where My Heart Is written by Alasdair Brooks and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Much needed. Fills an existing gap in the historical period with a wide range of examples from all over the world."--Margarita Díaz-Andreu, author of A World History of Nineteenth-Century Archaeology: Nationalism, Colonialism, and the Past "Provides new, nuanced perspectives that will inspire studies in the materiality of identity creation and transformation in the past and its role in heritage creation in the present."--Stephen A. Brighton, author of Historical Archaeology of the Irish Diaspora: A Transnational Approach "Thoughtful, challenging, and original. Expands the spatial and temporal parameters of the growing literature on nationalism and national identity."--Philip L. Kohl, coeditor of Selective Remembrances: Archaeology in the Construction, Commemoration, and Consecration of National Pasts The Country Where My Heart Is explores the archaeology of the period during which modern nationalism developed. While much of the previous research has focused on how governments and other institutions manipulate the archaeology of the distant past for ideological reasons, the contributors to this volume articulate what material artifacts of the modern world can reveal about the rise and fall of modern nationalism and national identities. They explore themes of colonialism, religion, political power and struggle, mythmaking, and the formation of heritage and memory not only in modern nation-states but also in places where the geographical boundaries of a "homeland" are harder to draw. Featuring case studies from northwestern and Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Americas, the essays examine how historical archaeology informs the concept of national identity and the formation of the modern nation and how this identity is intimately and inseparably entangled with, yet still distinct from, ethnicity and race. Alasdair Brooks, honorary visiting fellow at the University of Leicester, is the editor of The Importance of British Material Culture to Historical Archaeologies of the Nineteenth Century. Natascha Mehler, senior researcher at the German Maritime Museum and honorary reader at the University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland, is the editor of Historical Archaeology in Central Europe.
