Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Our Changing Planet: The U.S. Global Change Research Program for Fiscal Year (FY) 2013" summarizes USGCRP's significant progress toward achieving its strategic goals and building a knowledge base that effectively informs human responses to global change . The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) coordinates scientific research across 13 Federal departments and agencies whose missions include understanding changes in the global environment and their implications for society. In accordance with the Global Change Research Act of 1990 (GCRA) the enclosed report summarizes USGCRP's recent achievements, current status, future priorities, and FY 2013 budget information. Notably, in Apri12012, USGCRP released the National Global Change Research Plan 2012-2021: A Strategic Plan for the U.S. Global Change Research Program. The Plan sets four strategic goals for USGCRP to achieve over the next decade: (1) advance science; (2) inform decisions; (3) conduct sustained assessments; and (4) communicate and educate. It also reinforces the importance of partnerships that leverage Federal investments and foster broad use of Program results. Implementation of this Plan will build upon USGCRP's strengths in integrated observation, modeling, information services, and science to serve societal needs. It will also fully address the GCRA mandate to "understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change."

Book Accomplishments of the U S Global Change Research Program

Download or read book Accomplishments of the U S Global Change Research Program written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) is an interagency program, established by the Global Change Research Act (GCRA) of 1990, mandated by Congress to "assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change". Since the USGCRP began, scientific understanding of global change has increased and the information needs of the nation have changed dramatically. A better understanding of what is changing and why can help decision makers in the public and private sectors cope with ongoing change. Accomplishments of the U.S. Global Change Research Program highlights the growth of global change science in the quarter century that the USGCRP has been in existence, and documents some of its contributions to that growth through its primary functions of interagency planning and coordination, and of synthesis of research and practice to inform decision making.

Book Adaptive Governance and Climate Change

Download or read book Adaptive Governance and Climate Change written by Ronald Brunner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As greenhouse gas emissions and temperatures at the poles continue to rise, so do damages from extreme weather events affecting countless lives. Meanwhile, ambitious international efforts to cut emissions (Kyoto, Copenhagen) have proved to be politically ineffective or infeasible. There is hope, however, in adaptive governance—an approach that has succeeded in some local communities and can be undertaken by others around the globe. This book provides a political and historical analysis of climate change policy; shows how adaptive governance has worked on the ground in Barrow, Alaska, and other local communities; and makes the case for adaptive governance as a complementary approach in the climate change regime.

Book Global Ocean Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : Committee on Major U.S. Oceanographic Research Programs
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1999-02-19
  • ISBN : 0309593433
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Global Ocean Science written by Committee on Major U.S. Oceanographic Research Programs and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent years, large-scale investigations into global climate change and other highly visible issues have taken the lion's share of declining research funds. At the same time, funding for basic research in such core disciplines as physical oceanography, biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, and marine geology has dwindled. Global Ocean Science examines how the largest U.S. ocean research programs, such as the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), have significantly contributed to our understanding of the oceans. The book examines the impact of these programs on research, education, and collegiality within this diverse scientific community and offers recommendations to help ensure a vital future for ocean science, including: Specific results of the programs such as data collected, conceptual breakthroughs, information published, demonstrable use of program products, incorporation of new knowledge into education, and contribution to policymaking and decisionmaking by federal agencies. Mechanisms for efficiently identifying knowledge gaps and research questions, strategic planning of research programs, managing competitive proposals, securing needed resources, and more. This practical book will be welcomed by ocean investigators, users of oceanographic research findings, policymakers, administrators, educators, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Our Changing Planet: The U.S. Global Change Research Program for Fiscal Year 2014” summarizes USGCRP's significant progress toward achieving its strategic goals, supporting the President's Climate Action Plan, and building a knowledge base that effectively informs human responses to global change. . The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) coordinates scientific research across 13 Federal departments and agencies whose missions include understanding changes in the global environment and their implications for society. In accordance with the Global Change Research Act of 1990 (GCRA), the enclosed report summarizes USGCRP's recent achievements, current status, future priorities, and FY 2014 budget information. In June 2013, the President released his Climate Action Plan, laying out the case for action on climate change and the steps his Administration will take to address it, and drawing attention to USGCRP's important role in informing this process. In this new edition of Our Changing Planet, USGCRP will illustrate how accomplishments and investments that support its 2012–2021 Strategic Plan—as well as the President's Climate Action Plan—build upon current strengths in integrated observations, research, modeling, and information services to serve societal needs. A brief exploration of the essential research infrastructure of USGCRP will lead into highlighted examples of key societally relevant program focus areas. Sample cases—such as extreme weather and climate events, rising sea levels and melting ice, and climate-change impacts on human health—will exemplify the end-to-end nature of USGCRP that progresses from research to sustained assessment, education, communication, and decision support. This approach fully addresses the GCRA mandate to “understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change.”
