Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] stunning tale of academic fraud . . . shocking and compelling.”-The Washington Post Dave Tomar wrote term papers for a living. Technically, the papers were “study guides,” and the companies he wrote for-there are quite a few-are completely aboveboard and easily found with a quick web search. For as little as ten dollars a page, these paper mills provide a custom essay, written to the specifics of any course assignment. During Tomar's career as an academic surrogate, he wrote made-to-order papers for everything from introductory college courses to Ph.D. dissertations. There was never a shortage of demand for his services. The Shadow Scholar is the story of this dubious but all-too-common career. In turns shocking, absurd, and ultimately sobering, Tomar explores not merely his own misdeeds but the bureaucratic and cash-hungry colleges, lazy students, and even misguided parents who help make it all possible.

  • Author : Bernard Lefkowitz
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2023-12-22
  • ISBN : 0520918037

Download or read book Our Guys written by Bernard Lefkowitz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a crime that captured national attention. In the idyllic suburb of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, four of the town's most popular high school athletes were accused of raping a retarded young woman while nine of their teammates watched. Everyone was riveted by the question: What went wrong in this seemingly flawless American town? In search of the answer, Bernard Lefkowitz takes the reader behind Glen Ridge's manicured facade into the shadowy basement that was the scene of the rape, into the mansions on "Millionaire's Row," into the All-American high school, and finally into the courtroom where justice itself was on trial. Lefkowitz's sweeping narrative, informed by more than 200 interviews and six years of research, recreates a murky adolescent world that parents didn't—or wouldn't—see: a high school dominated by a band of predatory athletes; a teenage culture where girls were frequently abused and humiliated at sybaritic and destructive parties, and a town that continued to embrace its celebrity athletes—despite the havoc they created—as "our guys." But that was not only true of Glen Ridge; Lefkowitz found that the unqualified adulation the athletes received in their town was echoed in communities throughout the nation. Glen Ridge was not an aberration. The clash of cultures and values that divided Glen Ridge, Lefkowitz writes, still divides the country. Parents, teachers, and anyone concerned with how children are raised, how their characters are formed, how boys and girls learn to treat each other, will want to read this important book.

Book Pakistan s Nuclear Exclusion

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2024-06-29

Download or read book Pakistan s Nuclear Exclusion written by DR SANA. RAHIM and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed over six chapters, Pakistan's Nuclear Exclusion provides an account of how orientalism is a lived experience of post-colonial racism, injustice, and inequality amongst members of the nuclear community in Pakistan. The account is produced through interviews with members of the community consisting of students, academics, and physicists in Pakistan. Rahim offers unique insights into how Pakistan's nuclear community is not only perceived and represented but also how it seeks to operate in a wider nuclear community dominated by Western nuclear powers. The provision of such highly contextualised insights is enabled by the book setting out to both (a) provide analytical space for and (b) 'give voice' to how orientalism is experienced in the everyday of their lives. Consequently, the work provides (1) an analysis of how 'dominant discourses' of nuclear management and their 'pictures of reason' are exclusionary, (2) an analysis of the core features of orientalism as they pertain to Pakistan's nuclear community; and (3) empirical findings which produce categories of the experience of orientalism into areas of the everyday âe" exclusion, making a career, Islamophobia, technology denial and self-reliance. Pakistan's Nuclear Exclusion is enormously valuable to the research community as well as extremely well-conceived and researched. In addition, much of the methodology chapter offers a level of sophistication and self-reflection that translates well in the interview material and its subsequent analysis.
