Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a rapidly urbanizing India, what is the future of nature conservation? How does the march of development impact the conflict between nature and people in India’s cities? Exploring these questions, Nature in the City examines the past, present and future of nature in Bengaluru, one of India’s largest and fastest growing cities. Once known as the Garden City of India, Bengaluru’s tree-lined avenues, historic parks and expansive water bodies have witnessed immense degradation and destruction in recent years, but have also shown remarkable tenacity for survival. This book charts Bengaluru’s journey from the early settlements in the 6th century CE to the 21st century city and demonstrates how nature has looked and behaved and has been perceived in Bengaluru’s home gardens, slums, streets, parks, sacred spaces and lakes. A fascinating narrative of the changing role and state of nature in the midst of urban sprawl and integrating research with stories of people and places, this book presents an accessible and informative story of a city where nature thrives and strives.

Book excerpt: The author, a banker for over three decades, is aggrieved with the common aphorism that Bankers are neither humorous nor receptive to humour. The general perception is that one cannot be humorous while counting cash and handling sensitive monetary instruments. ‘Banking Humour’ is an attempt to nullify that wrong belief. Bankers indeed generate humour, though unwittingly, which is better than just being humorous. The forty-three episodes narrated in this book are empirical and true in essence. The author opines that bankers occupy a pivotal position in society. They, like all competent men, should laugh at themselves and publicise their endearing attributes without giving others the chance to laugh at them.

  • Author : AnjaliGera Roy
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351574000
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Bhangra Moves written by AnjaliGera Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhangra is commonly understood as the hybrid music produced in Britain by British Asian music producers through mixing Panjabi folk melodies with western pop and black dance rhythms. This is derived from a Punjabi harvest dance of the same name. This book looks at Bhangra's global flows from one of its originary sites, the Indian subcontinent, to contribute to the understanding of emerging South Asian cultural practices such as Bhangra or Bollywood in multi-ethnic societies. It seeks to trace Bhangra's moves from Punjab and its 'return back' to look at the forces that initiate and regulate global flows of local texts and to ask how their producers and consumers redirect them to produce new definitions of culture, identity and nation. The critical importance of this book lies in understanding the difference between the present globalizing wave and previous trans-local movements. Gera Roy contrasts the frames of cultural imperialism with those of cultural invasion to show how Indian cultures have constantly reinvented themselves by cross-pollinating with 'invading' cultures such as Hellenic, Persian, Arabic and many others in the past. By looking at Bhangra's flows to and from India, the book revises the relation between culture, space and identity and challenges boundaries. It weighs both the uses and costs of visibility provided by global networks to marginalized groups in diverse localities and explores whether collaborations between Bhangra practitioners, largely of working class origin, give ordinary people any control over the circulation of culture in the global village. Finally, the book considers whether cultural practices can alter hierarchies and power structures in the real world.

Book Age Of Pandemics 1817 1920

Download or read book Age Of Pandemics 1817 1920 written by Chinmay Tumbe and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From lockdowns to lockups, viruses to vaccination, the movement of people to the movement of bowels, from rats to cats, and more, The Age of Pandemics chronicles the many facets of the cholera, plague and influenza pandemics, which claimed over 70 million lives between 1817 and 1920, with India being the epicentre in all these episodes. The book argues that the period between the early nineteenth century to the early twentieth century - an age otherwise known for the worldwide spread of the industrial revolution, imperialism and globalization - was also the 'age of pandemics'. It documents the scale of devastation, the likely causes and consequences, and the resilience with which people faced those pandemics. The book also provides the first comprehensive coverage of the world's greatest demographic disaster ever to descend upon a country in a short period of time - the influenza pandemic in India in 1918, which claimed more lives than all the battle casualties of World War I. And it shows the continuing relevance of learning from those times to tackle contemporary challenges, such as COVID-19.
