Book Abraham Kuenen 1828 1891 His Major Contributions to the Study of the Old Testament

Download or read book Abraham Kuenen 1828 1891 His Major Contributions to the Study of the Old Testament written by Dirksen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the five papers read at a Symposium held in Leiden on 10 December 1991, on the occasion of the centenary of Abraham Kuenen's death, together with four other articles. The introductory article gives a short biography of Kuenen, one article deals with his method, two concern his approach to the religion of ancient Israel, and the other six discuss the reception of his work on the Pentateuch and later developments in various countries. Together these articles highlight the significance of this great Old Testament scholar, and at the same time identify issues which continue to confront Old Testament research. Though the wide variety of new approaches to the Old Testament has contributed greatly to our understanding of it, it is clear that historical research has not been rendered obsolete or superfluous by it.

Book Tetragrammaton Western Christians and the Hebrew Name of God

Download or read book Tetragrammaton Western Christians and the Hebrew Name of God written by Robert J. Wilkinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Reception of the Hebrew name of God has not previously been described in such detail and over such an extended period. This work places that varied reception within the context of early Jewish and Christian texts; Patristic Studies; Jewish-Christian relationships; Mediaeval thought; the Renaissance and Reformation; the History of Printing; and the development of Christian Hebraism. The contribution of notions of the Tetragrammaton to orthodox doctrines and debates is exposed, as is the contribution its study made to non-orthodox imaginative constructs and theologies. Gnostic, Kabbalistic, Hermetic and magical texts are given equally detailed consideration. There emerge from this sustained and detailed examination several recurring themes concerning the difficulty of naming God, his being and his providence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Old Testament Theology? For the past two hundred years Old Testament scholars have developed a distinctive presentation of the theological significance of this literature on the basis of a penetrating historical criticism. Increasingly, however, the form and structure of this discipline have moved away from other areas of theological investigation. The result is that today Old Testament theology bears little relationship to the historic ways in which Christians and Jews have actually found theological meaning in the Bible.

Book Creation and the Persistence of Evil

Download or read book Creation and the Persistence of Evil written by Jon D. Levenson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1994-12-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paperback edition brings to a wide audience one of the most innovative and meaningful models of God for this post-Auschwitz era. In a thought-provoking return to the original Hebrew conception of God, which questions accepted conceptions of divine omnipotence, Jon Levenson defines God's authorship of the world as a consequence of his victory in his struggle with evil. He traces a flexible conception of God to the earliest Hebrew sources, arguing, for example, that Genesis 1 does not describe the banishment of evil but the attempt to contain the menace of evil in the world, a struggle that continues today.
