Yet English, a primary language of neither the persecutors nor the victims, has generally been viewed as marginal to the events of the Holocaust. Alan Rosen argues that this marginal status profoundly affects writing on the Holocaust in English and fundamentally shapes our understanding of the events. Sounds of Defiance chronicles the evolving status of English in writing about the Holocaust, from the period of the Second World War to the 1990s. ø Each chapter highlights a representative work from a different genre?psychology, sociology, memoir, tales, fiction, and film?and examines the special position of English with regard to the Holocaust, supported by references to the role of other languages, including Hebrew, Yiddish, and German. This original approach provides a new perspective on such standard works as Eichmann in Jerusalem, The Shawl, and Maus, while drawing attention to others largely unknown. How did the Protestant establishment react to the efforts of this group, which allowed women to preach, practiced alternative forms of marriage, sex, and family life, and believed Jesus could be female? Aaron Spencer Fogleman explains how these views, as well as the Moravians' missionary successes, provoked a vigorous response by Protestant authorities on both sides of the Atlantic. Based on documents in German, Dutch, and English from the Old World and the New, Jesus Is Female chronicles the religious violence that erupted in many German and Swedish communities in colonial America as colonists fought over whether to accept the Moravians, and suggests that gender issues were at the heart of the raging conflict. Colonists fought over the feminine, ecumenical religious order offered by the Moravians and the patriarchal, confessional order offered by Lutheran and Reformed clergy. This episode reveals both the potential and the limits of radical religion in early America. Though religious nonconformity persisted despite the repression of the Moravians, and though America remained a refuge for such groups, those who challenged the cultural order in their religious beliefs and practices would not escape persecution. Jesus Is Female traces the role of gender in eighteenth-century religious conflict back to the European Reformation and the beginnings of Protestantism. This transatlantic approach heightens our understanding of American developments and allows for a better understanding of what occurred when religious freedom in a colonial setting led to radical challenges to tradition and social order.

Do narratives about the Holocaust have a special obligation to be 'truthful'--that is, faithful to the facts of history? Or is it okay to lie in such works? In her provocative study A Thousand Darknesses, Ruth Franklin investigates these questions as they arise in the most significant works of Holocaust fiction, from Tadeusz Borowski's Auschwitz stories to Jonathan Safran Foer's postmodernist family history. Franklin argues that the memory-obsessed culture of the last few decades has led us to mistakenly focus on testimony as the only valid form of Holocaust writing. As even the most canonical texts have come under scrutiny for their fidelity to the facts, we have lost sight of the essential role that imagination plays in the creation of any literary work, including the memoir. Taking a fresh look at memoirs by Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi, and examining novels by writers such as Piotr Rawicz, Jerzy Kosinski, W.G. Book excerpt: In 1948 a Holocaust memoir was published in German under the title Notes from a Bunker and under the authorship of Jakob Littner. In 1991 the book was republished as Jakob Littner's Notes from a Bunker, authored by Wolfgang Koeppen, a noted postwar German novelist, who died in 1996. The dust jacket of the new edition bore the rubric "A Novel, " and in his brief preface Koeppen explained: "The man who had escaped was looking for a writer....The publisher asked me: 'Do you want to write it?' This human being who had been so abused wanted to get away. He emigrated to America. He promised me an honorarium -- two care packages each month. I ate American rations and wrote the story about the suffering of a German Jew. In doing so, it became my story." "My story"? Critics have wondered about that. Is the book fictional at all? And if so, how much? As it turns out, Koeppen worked from a fully completed typescript written by one Jakob Littner who did indeed experience the horrific events described inthe "novel" and emigrated to America, where he died in 1950. This is his own true story, with additional family and historical material provided by a younger relative. Littner's story is unusual because it takes place not in a concentration camp, but in a town in Ukraine on the Eastern front. Littner's memoir traces his life from Munich, where he was a highly successful stamp dealer, to the ghetto of Zbaraz in Ukraine. In spare but harrowing prose, it describes the destruction of the Jews of Zbaraz and Littner's almost miraculous survival through chance and resourcefulness, and the remarkable actions of Christa, a beautiful German woman who had been his business partner in Munich. One element thatis sure to spark controversy is the active role of the Jewish Council and Jewish Militia in the killing of the Jews of Zbaraz.
