Download or read book SYLVANIA LUCAS COUNTY OHIO written by Gayleen Gindy and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join the author in reliving Sylvania's over 180 years of history from footpaths to expressways and beyond, in volume four of an eight volume set. With 30 years of research she has included every subject imaginable that helped bring Sylvania to where they are today, with excellent schools, over-the-top parks and recreation, rich beautiful homes, commercial and industrial businesses and a quaint historical dowtown that looks like it was planned by Norman Rockwell himself. This book is a treasure trove of information for the thousands who have ancestors that once lived and helped Sylvania grow through these years. Located in northwestern Ohio, Sylvania is a suburb of Toledo, Ohio and for many years has been known as "the fastest growing suburb in Lucas County." A once rural farm community, between both the city and township they have grown from a combined 2,220 residents in 1910, to 48,487 in 2010. Over a short period of time the land has transformed into beautiful subdivisions of grand houses, so that now their subdivision names are all that remain to remind them of their once dense forests and sprawling farmlands. No longer can Sylvania be called the "bedroom community" of Toledo, because over the last 50 years they have done a lot more than sleep.
Download or read book Toledo written by William D. Speck and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By World War I, Toledo's prosperity paralleled the growing popularity of the automobile, which transported citizens to impressive homes along the Maumee River, Ottawa Hills, Westmoreland, and Old Orchard. After World War II, stores, theaters, and businesses migrated out of 19th-century city boundaries as well. Toledo in the 1920s and 1930s boasted elegant department stores, the Commodore Perry Hotel, the towering new Ohio Building, and the legendary Paramount Theater. Great expressions of faith, Rosary Cathedral and Doc Hettinger's "Garden of Eden," were built. Depression years saw the Zoo, the University of Toledo, and the Peristyle at the Art Museum built. Toledo innovations, glass block and vitrolite, were used to great effect at the new Main Library building.

Download or read book Pontiac written by Ronald K. Gay and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detroits first mayor, Solomon Sibley, and his wife, Sarah (Sproat) Sibley, were responsible for organizing a group that set out in 1818 for a plot of land 30 miles north, at the confluence of the Huron River of St. Clair (now the Clinton) and several Native American trails. The future town would be named for Pontiac, the warrior chief of the Ottawa Nation, best known for his Indian uprising of 1763 against the British at Fort Detroit and Fort Michilimackinac. Many of Pontiacs founding fathers were veterans of the War of 1812. They named their new streets for heroic figures of those struggles: Lawrence, Perry, and Clinton. Two years after settlement, Pontiac became the county seat for Oakland. It would also become a mill town, railroad hub, wagon and buggy manufacturing center, the site of a state asylum, and a mecca for automotive industries. Pontiac was the nations leading manufacturer of trucks and buses, before and during the heyday of General Motors Truck and Coach division. The construction of the Pontiac Airport in 1928 only enhanced the citys role in southeast Michigan. It has long been a cultural melting pot. Today Pontiac is known as the northern Woodward Avenue terminus for the annual Dream Cruise.
