Book Otis Letters in Defence of the Hartford Convention and the People of Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Otis Letters in Defence of the Hartford Convention and the People of Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Harrison Gray Otis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Otis' Letters in Defence of the Hartford Convention and the People of Massachusetts In presenting to the public this collection of Mr. Otis' Letters upon the Hartford Convention, we do him no more than justice in declaring our conviction that he has amply redeemed his promises. He has demonstrated not merely the moral, but the physical impossibility of a secret combination, so often charged on that assembly; and though obliged to refer to facts and events which transpired during the war, he has forborne reviving topics of controversy, and has provided an armour for the defence of the honor of the State, which even his political opponents need not be backward to put on. Expectation too may be entertained that the brow beaten and calculating friends of the primitive plan of the Convention, (if any such there be) who have kept aloof and borne with exemplary fortitude censures inflicted on their agents, will no longer be ashamed or afraid to put in a word, though a commendable prudence may forbid their taking up a Cudgel in behalf of their old Forlorn Hope. The censors of the Hartford Convention may be divided into three classes. First the "Enragees," or those who affect to be patriots "par excellence." Book excerpt: This book presents the meticulous case studies of three individual houses from different eras, which serve to depict the social, political, and cultural effects that domestic architecture and interior design had on the upper class, the city of Boston, and a national American identity. It takes the reader on a journey to 18th and 19th century Boston and provides insight into the lives of these prominent men and women as seen through the perspective of their homes. It is a novel examination of the cultural significance of domestic architecture and interior design and, because of its story-telling character and extensive attention to detail, it is fascinating for curious readers and cultural historians alike.

Book Monitoring American Federalism

Download or read book Monitoring American Federalism written by Christian G. Fritz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring American Federalism examines some of the nation's most significant controversies in which state legislatures have attempted to be active partners in the process of constitutional decision-making. Christian G. Fritz looks at interposition, which is the practice of states opposing federal government decisions that were deemed unconstitutional. Interposition became a much-used constitutional tool to monitor the federal government and organize resistance, beginning with the Constitution's ratification and continuing through the present affecting issues including gun control, immigration and health care. Though the use of interposition was largely abandoned because of its association with nullification and the Civil War, recent interest reminds us that the federal government cannot run roughshod over states, and that states lack any legitimate power to nullify federal laws. Insightful and comprehensive, this appraisal of interposition breaks new ground in American political and constitutional history, and can help us preserve our constitutional system and democracy.

Download or read book The War of 1812 written by Donald R Hickey and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and authoritative history of the War of 1812, thoroughly revised for the 200th anniversary of the historic conflict, is a myth-shattering study that will inform and entertain students, historians, and general readers alike. Donald R. Hickey explores the military, diplomatic, and domestic history of our second war with Great Britain, bringing the study up to date with recent scholarship on all aspects of the war, from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. The newly expanded The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict, Bicentennial Edition includes additional information on the British forces, American Indians, and military operations such as the importance of logistics and the use and capabilities of weaponry. Hickey explains how the war promoted American nationalism and manifest destiny, stimulated peacetime defense spending, and enhanced America's reputation abroad. He also shows that the war sparked bloody conflicts between pro-war Republican and anti-war Federalist neighbors, dealt a crippling blow to American Indians, and solidified the United States's antipathy toward the British. Book-of-the-Month Club and History Book Club selections and received one of the two 1990 "Best Book Awards" from the American Military Institute.
