Book excerpt: Skye, a teenage girl, knows the mall and drugs and the loyalty of her best friend, Bombsie. Our future, in which she lives, is hedonistic and youth oriented; those who believe in God get a mind-wipe, and old folks can be euthanized at sixty-five. The state is an overpowering presence and BillyBoysthe copsare a real and constant threat. The concept of family has scant meaning, and the young people know little of morality, living by an us-against-them ethic and believing that pleasure is the sole purpose of life. When Skye is forced to participate in preparations for her grandmothers euthanasia, she finds herself in the thick of a group of loonies and criminals that she and her friends have always hated and even physically attackedChristians. Furiously, she struggles to maintain her selfish existence against the implacable new force of selflessness, which asks of her the unthinkablethe impossible sacrifice.

Book Handbook of Biocide and Preservative Use

Download or read book Handbook of Biocide and Preservative Use written by H.W. Rossmoore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-12-31 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My professional interest in antimicrobial agents and contamination control goes back 50 years to my tour as a microbiologist in a field hospital in Europe during World War II. With no experience and relying solely on a military handbook, I prepared thermometer trays with jars of blue bichloride of mercury and pink isopropyl alcohol. A preliminary typhoid diagnosis of one of our cooks resulted in the need for lab testing. His stool specimen and its subsequent disposal was my problem. My handbook said bum it. So burn it T did, in a five-gallon can with gasoline. Flames shot up almost six feet, and my next mistake was to extinguish them with carbon tetrachloride. This resulted in the production of lethal phosgene gas. The hospital had a near disaster. I could say that at that moment I vowed to write a how-to book so that such stupidities could be avoided. Nevertheless, when I was offered the opportunity to edit this book I thought back on the need for a real, practical treatment of my subject. This book, then, is a practical handbook for technical service personnel and scientists who are not necessarily specialists in microbiology. It provides information on suitable antimicrobial agents appropriate to their particular problem-solving needs and information on the microbial groups contributing to the specific problem, their ecologies, and strategies for controlling their access to the area or material of interest.

Book Othappu

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sār̲ā Jōsaph
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2009

  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Othappu written by Sār̲ā Jōsaph and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third in a trilogy of novels-the other two being Aalahayude Pennmakkal (1999) which won a Central Sahitya Akademi Award, and Maatathi (2001)-Othappu is set in the Kerala Christian community, which splits broadly into Roman Catholics, Syrian Christians, and Charismatics who emphasize free worship and faith-healing. l Othappu (2003), the winner of two State-level awards, raises important issues revolving around a self-consciously religious society: the role of piety, spirituality, family, sexuality, and the freedom of the individual or the lack of it. Peppered and layered with Biblical quotations and allusions, and carrying echoes and subtexts that parallel events in the New Testament, the novel gives us rare glimpses of Malayali Christian society. Literally meaning outrage or scandal directly linked with breaking sexual codes of behavior, Othappu is a crucial text chiefly because the socio-psychological implications of convent-life, and its contradictions and conflicts, have rarely been discussed in Indian fiction; nor has female subjectivity in the Malayali Christian culturescape been made available in English before. As Sara Joseph tunnels into the lives of her characters, the conclusion shows people up for who they really are, and what they are prepared to bear, in support of their actions. Book Homing Instincts

Download or read book Homing Instincts written by Sarah Menkedick and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-Listed for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay Sarah Menkedick spent her twenties trekking alone across South America, teaching English to recalcitrant teenagers on Reunion Island, picking grapes in France and camping on the Mongolian grasslands; for her, meaning and purpose were to be found on the road, in flight from the ordinary. Yet the biggest and most transformative adventure of her life might be one she never anticipated: at 31, she moves into a tiny 19th-century cabin on her family's Ohio farm, and begins the journey into motherhood. In eight vivid and boldly questioning essays, Menkedick explores the luminous, disorienting time just before and after becoming a mother. As she reacquaints herself with the subtle landscapes of the Midwest, and adjusts to the often surprising physicality of pregnancy, she ruminates on what this new stage of life means for her long-held concepts of self, settling, and creative fulfillment. In “Millie, Mildred, Grandma Menkedick,” she considers the nature of story through the life of her tough German grandmother, who raised two boys as a single mother in the 1950s and then spent her seventies traveling the world with her best friend Marge; in “Motherland,” on a trip back to Oaxaca, Mexico to visit her husband’s family, she finally embraces her Midwestern roots; in “The Milk Cave,” she discovers in breastfeeding a new appreciation for the spiritual and artistic potential of boredom; and in “The Lake,” she revisits her childhood with her father, whose relentless optimism and mystical streak she sees anew once she has a child of her own. A story of a traveler come home to the farm; of becoming a mother in spite of reservations and doubt; and of learning to appreciate the power and beauty of the quotidian, Homing Instincts speaks to the deepest concerns and hopes of a generation.
