Book excerpt: Rumour and romance get all stirred up in a fabulous read from the heart of the African outback. Roo Beckett knew there had to be a catch when she won first prize in a prestigious wildlife film-making competition. A month's mentorship in the beautiful South African game reserve, Leopard Rock, with renowned film-maker Wyk Kruger, seemed simply too good to be true. Sure enough, after her free-loading, fashion-magazine colleagues decide to tag along, Roo's solo African adventure doesn't have the best of starts. But that's the least of her worries. Lost in the African outback, Roo's soon struggling with a bigger and more unexpected problem - her attraction to the mysterious Wyk himself...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wondering if you're a true carnivore? Looking for a great recipe for Rattlesnake Chili? Read this book: a fast, funny, and enlightening celebration of the immense joys of flesh—consuming it, that is. The average American consumes 218.3 pounds of meat every year. But concerns about mad cow disease, industrial feedlot practices, and self-righteous vegetarians have made the carnivorous lifestyle somewhat déclassé. Now, Scott Gold issues a red-blooded call to arms for the meat-adoring masses to rise up, speak out, and reclaim their pride. The Shameless Carnivore explores the complexities surrounding the choice to eat meat as well as its myriad pleasures. Delving into everything from ethical issues to dietary, anthropological, and medical findings, Gold answers such probing questions as: Can staying carnivorous be more healthful than going vegetarian? What’s behind the “tastes like chicken” phenomenon? And, of course, What qualities should you look for in a butcher? The author also chronicles his attempt to become the "ultimate carnivore" by eating 31 different meats in 31 days (as well as every cut and organ of a cow) He includes tasty recipes and describes his experiences hunting squirrels in Louisiana attending the annual testicle festival, and even spending an entire, painstaking week as a vegetarian. From the "critter dinners" he relished as a child to his adult forays into exotic game and adventures in the kitchen, Gold writes with an infectious enthusiasm that might just inspire you to serve a little llama or rattlesnake at your next dinner party. This is the definitive book for meat lovers.

Book Culturing the Body

Download or read book Culturing the Body written by Benjamin Collins and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human body is both the site of lived experiences and a means of communicating those experiences to a diverse audience. Hominins have been culturing their bodies, that is adding social and cultural meaning through the use pigments and objects, for over 100,000 years. There is archaeological evidence for practices of adornment of the body by late Pleistocene and early Holocene hominins, including personal ornaments, clothing, hairstyles, body painting, and tattoos. These practices have been variously interpreted to reflect differences such as gender, status, and ethnicity, to attract or intimidate others, and as indices of a symbolically mediated self and personal identity. These studies contribute to a novel and growing body of evidence for diversity of cultural expression in the past, something that is a hallmark of human cultures today.
