These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Ossian in Germany - Bibliography, General Survey, Ossian's Influence upon - Klopstock and the Bards: Look inside the book: The pivot of the whole is that collection of the so–called Poems of Ossian published by James Macpherson from 1760 to 1763, and as the titles of the different portions of this collection are frequently misquoted, I have deemed it advisable to prefix them to the German bibliography, together with the most important later editions. ...Der Tod Oskars (1772), Deutsches Museum (1783), and Nachlese zu Sineds Liedern (1784).—A translation of Ossian’s poems in hexameters, which appeared in 1768–9, not in 1767–9, as Gurlitt (April 9, 1802, p. 6) and others have it. ...A translation by Christian Felix Weisse of John Macpherson’s Critical Dissertations on the Origin, Antiquities, Language, Government, Manners, and Religion of the ancient Caledonians (London, 1768), to which are added prose translations of four so–called bardic songs, none of which, however, is taken from Ossian.

Book Nature s Ideological Landscape

Download or read book Nature s Ideological Landscape written by Kenneth Olwig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984 Nature’s Ideological Language examines the common ideological roots of environmental reclamation and nature preservation. In the general context of European, British and American historical experience, the Jutland heaths of Denmark are taken as a concrete example for a general critique of European and American policy concerning the use of landscape. Two sets of contradictions are highlighted: ideological and practical between development and preservation; and those between scientific, historical aesthetic and recreational motivation for preservation. The book is based on a study of the Jutland heath from 1750 to the present, focusing on the Danish perception of the area as expressed in literary art and in economic journals, topographies and government reports. Against this background, the development of the modern conception of nature is traced and its ideological implications and planning consequences discussed. As a study of humanistic geography, this book will be of interest to geographers, conservationists and planners.

  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Thor written by Martin Arnold and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myths of the Norse god Thor were preserved in the Icelandic Eddas, set down in the early Middle Ages. The bane of giants and trolls, Thor was worshipped as the last line of defence against all that threatened early Nordic society. Thor's significance persisted long after the Christian conversion and, in the mid-eighteenth century, Thor resumed a symbolic prominence among northern countries. Admired and adopted in Scandinavia and Germany, he became central to the rhetoric of national romanticism and to more belligerent assertions of nationalism. Resurrected in the latter part of the twentieth century in Marvel Magazine, Thor was further transformed into an articulation both of an anxious male sexuality and of a parallel nervousness regarding American foreign policy. Martin Arnold explores the extraordinary regard in which Thor has been held since medieval times and considers why and how his myth has been adopted, adapted and transformed.

Book excerpt: A historic lawgiver and founder of an ancient nation, Moses was powerful and pivotal in the imagination of modern Germany. The late eighteenth to early twentieth century was an intense period of religious controversy, especially on 'the Jewish question', with new models for understanding faith, science, and the past. This volume focuses on the identification of Jewish law, both Pentateuch and Talmud, with the figure of Moses to trace the fascinations and anxieties of the Bible in modern culture. Through diverse perspectives, it examines the representations and appropriations of Moses as a father of Judaism and framer of European civilization.

The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
