Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines one of Rome's most influential churches: the principal basilica dedicated to St Paul. Nicola Camerlenghi traces nearly two thousand years of physical transformations to the church, from before its construction in the fourth century to its reconstruction following a fire in 1823. By recounting this long history, he restores the building to its rightful place as a central, active participant in epochal political and religious shifts in Rome and across Christendom, as well as a protagonist in Western art and architectural history. Camerlenghi also examines how buildings in general trigger memories and anchor meaning, and how and why buildings endure, evolve, and remain relevant in cultural contexts far removed from the moment of their inception. At its core, Saint Paul's exemplifies the concept of building as a process, not a product: a process deeply interlinked with religion, institutions, history, cultural memory, and the arts. This study also includes state-of-the-art digital reconstructions synthesizing a wealth of historical evidence to visualize and analyze the earlier (now lost) stages of the building's history, offering glimpses into heretofore unexamined parts of its long, rich life.

Book Letters from the Pillar Apostles

Download or read book Letters from the Pillar Apostles written by Darian R Lockett and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than reading the Catholic Epistles in isolation from each other - understanding their individual historical situations as the single, determinative context for their interpretation - this study argues that a proper understanding of these seven letters must equally attend to their collection and placement within the New Testament canon. Resisting the judgment of much of historical-critical analysis of the New Testament, namely that the concept of canon actually obscures the meaning of these texts, it is the canonical process by which the texts were composed, redacted, collected, arranged, and fixed in a final canonical form that constitutes a necessary interpretive context for these seven letters. This study argues that through reception history and paratextual and compositional evidence one can discern a collection consciousness within the Catholic Epistles such that they should be read and interpreted as an intentional, discrete canonical sub-collection set within the New Testament. Furthermore, the work argues that such collection consciousness, though not necessarily in the preview of the original authors (being perhaps unforeseen, yet not unintended), is neither anachronistic to the meaning of the letters nor antagonistic to their composition.

Download or read book New Testament Essays written by C. K. Barrett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. K. Barrett's gifts as a communicator are well displayed in this collection of some of his writings. He takes his readers on a series of well-organized expeditions into areas of controversy. He cuts a clear pathway through the intricacies of scholarly dispute and brings us close to the mind and heart of the men of the New Testament. Two lectures to English audiences on St. John's Gospel and three given originally in German on the Acts of the Apostles take the central place in the book, which concludes with a vindication of theology as an academic discipline. Theology has learnt the lesson that man lives by faith, not by sight, and at the same time has a sure confidence that the man who questions everything he can see will, nevertheless, find that his faith is not disappointed.

Book excerpt: Oscar Cullmann's 1962 revision of Peter in turn carefully treats the Historical Question and the Exegetical and Theological Question of the apostle Peter. While Cullmann cannot decisively confirm some of the details of Peter's life--his residence in Rome and the location of his grave, in particular--other details are described as more probable, such as Peter's travel to Rome and his martyrdom under Nero. Cullmann faithfully seeks Catholic-Protestant dialogue while maintaining that Jesus' words--upon this rock I will build my church--refer to the apostle alone and provide no historical basis for succession. The timeless quality of Cullmann's methods and his overwhelming concern for Christian unity are sure to inspire new generations of biblical scholars and contemporary theologians.

Book The Crowds in the Gospel of Matthew

Download or read book The Crowds in the Gospel of Matthew written by J.C.R. Cousland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume identifies the crowds (ochloi) in the Gospel of Matthew and explains their character and function. It argues that a proper appreciation of the crowds is essential to an understanding of salvation history in the gospel. The book identifies the crowds as Jewish, and establishes that both the positive and negative characterizations of the crowds correspond to portrayals of Israel drawn from the Hebrew Scriptures. It concludes that the crowds are also meant to be figurative for the Jewish people of Matthew's own day. New Testament scholars, particularly specialists in Matthew and the Synoptic Gospels will find the volume useful, and it will also appeal to those interested in early Jewish-Christian relations and the "parting of the ways" between the two faiths.
