The identification of these hermeneutic polarities presented the author with the challenging problem which underlies the present analysis, namely the question concerning the structural relationship between the contesting thematics. IAU Colloquium 66 on 'Problems of Solar and Stellar Oscillations' was held at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, U. S. S. R. , on 1-5 September, 1981. The principal purpose of the colloquium was to study the low-amplitude oscillations of the Sun and, to a lesser extent, to consider similar oscillations of other stars. Much of the emphasis of the discussions was on the diagnostic value of the oscilla tions. In the last few years we have become aware that the frequencies of the five-minute modes of high degree, which constitute the major component of the oscillations discovered twenty years ago by Evans and Michaud, can be used to put quite tight bounds on the stratification of the solar convection zone. These permit a calibration of solar models computed from so-called standard evolution theory. Modes of low degree penetrate beneath the convection zone to the core of the Sun, and can in principle test the evolution theory. Therefore there was considerable interest in the reports of the latest observations of such modes. Broadly speaking, those observations confirm the cali bration by the high-degree modes, but there remain some systematic discrepancies that demand some revision of the theory. Besides the gross aspects of evolution theory, there are also more intricate details to be understood.

Recent advances in brain activity measurements and analyses have allowed us to study the pathological oscillations of each disorder as a possible biomarker of symptoms. Furthermore, novel brain stimulation technologies will enable time- and space-targeted interventions of the pathological oscillations of both neurological and psychiatric disorders as possible therapeutic targets for regulating their symptoms. This Research Topic focused on understanding and controlling pathological oscillations in the brain will provide a comprehensive overview of pathological oscillations in neurological and psychiatric disorders. This Research Topic will also examine correlations or causal relationships between pathological oscillations and the symptoms of disorders with a view to the possible use of oscillations as biomarkers or therapeutic targets. Good animal models that accurately reflect neurological and psychiatric symptoms of patients are necessary for providing the proof-of-concept toward future translational research. This book gives an overview of the current observational and theoretical standpoint in the research on the physics under the extreme conditions that neutron stars naturally provide. The six chapters explore three physical regions of a neutron star: the space around it, where accretion and pulsar companions allow testing of general relativity its surface, where millisecond pulsation and X-ray burts provide clues about general relativistic effects and the equation of state of neutron matter its interior, of course, inaccessible to direct observations, can nevertheless, be probed with all observational parameters related to neutron star variability.
