Book excerpt: In a highly eventful year, the OSCE Yearbook 2015 assembles a compendium of insightful analysis and reports by leading practitioners and experts on events relating to the Organization, its 57 participating States, and the state of European security in all its dimensions. A special focus section looks at European security 40 years after the signing of the Helsinki Final Act. It includes a contribution by Germany's Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a critical review of the original CSCE process by Reinhard Mutz, and several in-depth analyses of European security and Russian-Western relations. A second focal point is the Ukraine crisis. Two key OSCE actors, Heidi Tagliavini and Claus Neukirch, provide first-hand accounts of the Organization's work in the areas of mediation and monitoring. Further contributions explore the role played by the ODIHR in Ukraine, the OSCE's overall approach to crisis management, and the link between conventional arms control and crisis management. Finally, P. Terrence Hopmann compares the current situation to the Ukraine crisis of 1992-96. Additional topics explored in the OSCE Yearbook 2015 include non-citizens in the Baltic states; the OSCE's field presences in Uzbekistan and Moldova; political developments in Georgia and the Western Balkans; religion and culture in Tajikistan; the withdrawal of ISAF from Afghanistan; the Islamic State's attempts to expand into Central Asia; the growth of right-wing populism in Europe; religious tolerance and the limits of satire; the importance of human security in the Mediterranean refugee crisis; the OSCE and the Arms Trade Treaty; the OSCE's Border Monitoring Operation in Georgia; and the history of OSCE involvement with civil society. The OSCE Yearbook includes extensive annexes with facts and figures on the participating States, a list of recent events, and a selected current bibliography

In particular it investigates and ponder the weight of identity issues, security perceptions, and economic development needs for interstate cooperation in the Eurasian context, by taking into account both supra-national frameworks and regional scenarios. Accordingly, the book is divided in two parts, focusing respectively on “Cooperation and Competition at Multilateral Level” and on “Regional Case Studies”.

Book Agonies of Empire

Download or read book Agonies of Empire written by Cox, Michael and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defeat of Donald Trump in November 2020 followed by the attack on the US Congress on 6th January 2021 represented a tipping point moment in the history of the American republic. Divided at home and facing a world sceptical of American claims to be the ‘indispensable nation’ in world politics, it is clear that the next few years will be decisive ones for the United States. But how did the US, which was riding high only 30 years ago, arrive at this critical point? And will it lead to the fall of what many would claim has been one of the most successful empires of modern times? In this volume, Michael Cox, a leading scholar of American foreign policy, outlines the ways in which five very different American Presidents – Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and now Biden – have addressed the complex legacies left them by their predecessors while dealing with the longer-term problems of running an empire under increasing stress. In so doing, he sets out a framework for thinking critically about US foreign policy since the end of the Cold War without ever losing sight of the biggest question of all: can America continue to shape world affairs or is it now facing long-term decline?

Book EU Central Asian Interactions

Download or read book EU Central Asian Interactions written by Rick Fawn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From limited interactions in the early 1990s, the EU and Central Asia now consider each other to be increasingly important. This book includes 12 chapters written by seasoned and policy-engaged researchers from across Eurasia and the wider world that analyse multiple levels of mutual interactions, understandings and misunderstandings across a range of policy areas. It shows why and in what ways exactly the EU and Central Asia matter to each other and why policymakers and researchers should pay more attention to their interactions. Central Asia falls under the broader external relations and security agenda of the EU, and over years it provided a testing ground for many EU policies, including the priority ones of region-building and resilience promotion. Looking at the EU, in turn, informs as to how Central Asian actors interact with external partners of the region, and how that can influence national policy agendas and consequently everyday life – bringing new approaches, insights and evidence also to the wide field of EU studies. This book is of key interest to scholars, practitioners and students of Central Asian history and politics, EU foreign policy, EU-Central Asia relations, and more broadly of EU studies, International Relations, regionalism and interregionalism as well as security studies. The chapters in this book were published over three issues of Central Asian Survey.
