Book Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray Youth Cult and Illusion of Beauty The new Hedonism in Light of our Society of Experience

Download or read book Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray Youth Cult and Illusion of Beauty The new Hedonism in Light of our Society of Experience written by Geoffrey Schöning and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2002-04-04 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0 (B), University of Freiburg (Institute for Anglistics), course: Introduction to English and American Literature Studies, 18 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Introduction “I speak the truth of tomorrow”i Lord Henry says on being asked to defend his “throne” as Prince Paradox. Although one of his usually witty answers in high society conversation, this indubitably self-confident statement leads to a general question: The “New Hedonism” as presented in Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, does it anticipate developments and structures of our modern society? To find an adequate answer to the question is the task of this research paper. Starting with an analysis of the theory presented by Lord Henry Wotton, there follows an overall view of the philosophy’s intellectual background. Afterwards, the look at Dorian’s life under the influence of the hedonistic model shall give first impressions of its practical effects. These three chapters therefore deal with the “New Hedonism” directly related to the novel itself and to its author Oscar Wilde. The second part of the paper then centres around the present situation. After introductory clarifications to the term “Erlebnisgesellschaft” and to general social changes, it scrutinises modern society for parallels to the outstanding pillars of the hedonistic programme. These are on the one hand self-realisation and the motive to be always seeking sensations, and on the other hand the cult of youth and beauty mania. Eventually, the findings of that examination end up in a conclusion which shall also serve as an outlook. Concerning the research done in this special field, it astonishes that there was only one work to be found which explicitly dealt with the relation between the “New Hedonism” in The Picture of Dorian Gray and modern society, namely a chapter of Norbert Kohl’s Oscar Wilde biography. Due to this circumstance, the literature consulted is clearly divided into two sectors: literary science and sociology. For the latter, it was the study “Die Erlebnis-gesellschaft” by Gerhard Schulze which was used as a main reference. Thus, syntactic fusion of German and English might be excused. [...]

The tale of Dorian Gray's moral disintegration caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, but though Wilde was attacked for the novel's corrupting influence, he responded that there is, in fact, "a terrible moral in Dorian Gray." Just a few years later, the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde's homosexual liaisons, which resulted in his imprisonment. Of Dorian Gray's relationship to autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, "Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be-in other ages, perhaps.

Book excerpt: Annotations This book is unique because it contains a literary criticism that was made by Juan AcevedoDorian Gray is a very attractive young aristocrat who, after having spent a solitary adolescence in the country, returns to London, where he has inherited a mansion. Attracted by the nightlife, he immersed himself in it by the hand of Lord Henry Wottom, who leads him to the most remote and sordid dens of the city. The young man is fascinated by Wotton's decadent and amoral lifestyle. On the other hand, his obsession to reach eternal youth impels him to make a diabolic pact: he will always remain young, but the traces of the passage of time and his terrible crimes, that is, his physical and moral degradation will be reflected in a portrait that his painter Basil Hallward has made for him.Review: When contemplating the delicate beauty of the narcissus, it is impossible not to think about the legend that gave rise to its name. That young man of great beauty who, after making fun of the love that the nymph Eco felt towards him and rejecting it cruelly, is cursed by Nemesis, goddess of revenge. Without knowing it, Narciso is doomed to fall in love with someone he can never have. When he leans to drink from a fountain, he feels captivated by his reflection and when he decides to submerge to reach it, he dies drowned. The legend says that on the shore where he died, a flower grew that was baptized with his name, as a reminder of the fatal outcome of the handsome young man, condemned for his beauty. This review of the myth collected in Ovid's "Metamorphosis" serves to introduce the main theme of "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" which is, precisely, narcissism. Jealous of the beauty and youth that reflects his portrait, he becomes obsessed with the immortality of that image and expresses his desire to exchange with her, regardless of the price required to see it fulfilled. Oscar Wilde himself said it: "Be careful what you want, it can become reality"From that moment, we witness the corruption of the spirit of Dorian, who is influenced by Lord Henry Wotton and his hedonistic vision of life. The philosophy of this character is summarized in idolizing beauty and satisfying the senses. No desire should be repressed, for the dissatisfaction of the body is the origin of all the evils of the spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picture of Dorian Gray is a Gothic and philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Fearing the story was indecent, the magazine's editor deleted roughly five hundred words before publication without Wilde's knowledge. Despite that censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press, although he personally made excisions of some of the most controversial material when revising and lengthening the story for book publication the following year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picture of Dorian Gray tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfilment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian (whimsically) expresses a desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than he. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, and when he subsequently pursues a life of debauchery, the portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging. The novel is considered a work of classic Gothic fiction with a strong Faustian theme.Wilipedia 2013
