West was actively engaged with the preparation of this exhibition up until his untimely death earlier this summer. Belonging to the generation of artists exposed to Actionist and Performance Art of the 1960s and70s, West instinctively rejected the traditionally passive nature of the relationship betweenartwork and viewer. Being equally opposed to the physical ordeal and existential intensity insisted upon by his performative forbears, he made work that was vigorous and imposing yet free and light-hearted, where form and function were roughly compatible rather than mutually exclusive. In the seventies, he produced the first of the small, portable, mixed media sculptures called Adaptives (Passstucke). These ergonomically inclined objects become complete as artworks only when the viewer holds, wears, carries or performs with them. Transposing the knowledge gained with these formative works, he explored sculpture increasingly in terms of an ongoing dialogue of actions and reactions between viewers and objects in any given exhibition space, while probing the internal aesthetic relations between sculpture and painting."

She casts from everyday objects as well as from the space beneath or around furniture and architecture, using single materials such as rubber, dental plaster, and resin to record every nuance. 'Detached 1', 'Detached 2', and 'Detached 3' (2012) render the empty interior of a garden shed in concrete and steel. Cast from generic wooden sheds, the large-scale sculptures render negative space into solid form, and the prosaic into something fantastically disquieting. Anna Maria von Phul (1786-1823) was the earliest-known female artist working in what was then called the Missouri Territory. Born in Philadelphia and raised largely in Kentucky, she spent her last half-decade in and around St. Louis. Though von Phul never considered herself a professional artist, her sketches and watercolors provide a singular window into the early-nineteenth-century lower Midwest. Von Phul's art depicts not only the landscape and natural world of the St. Louis area, but also its architecture, fashions, and social life, with a notable focus on the local Creole population. Hattie Felton's More than Ordinary is the first complete catalog of von Phul's existing work, all of which is part of the collections of the Missouri Historical Society. The book offers a valuable source of research for anyone interested in the histories of Missouri or Kentucky. More than that, it expands the story of American vernacular art and the role of women in that story. Felton's opening essay examines von Phul's education and artistic influences and explores her time in St. Louis and neighboring Edwardsville, Illinois, alongside letters, newspaper clippings, and other materials from her life. He is the recipient of several awards and grants, including those from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Hartman's work can be found in permanent public collections, including the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the MacLaren Art Centre; as well as prestigious corporate collections, such as Royal Bank of Canada and TD Canada Trust.

In this way, Tuazon's works--at once forceful and subtle, monumental and discreet--allow his audience to experience everyday space as extraordinarily arbitrary in its divisions and enclosures. Die documents the production of Tuazon's 2011 site-specific installation for the inaugural exhibition at The Power Station, a new venue for contemporary art in Dallas, Texas. For this installation, Tuazon produced two works, "Die" and "Dead Wrong." These works are recorded in black-and-white and color photographs, as well as through sketches and plans. An essay by Kim West, a poem by Ariana Reines and a text by Tuazon meditate on the broader implications of Tuazon's work.

Book excerpt: The Colombian-born, London-based artist Oscar Murillo is known for an inventive practice that encompasses paintings, works on paper, installations, actions, live events, collaborative projects, and videos. Taken as a whole, his body of work demonstrates a sustained emphasis on the notion of cultural exchange and the multiple ways in which ideas, languages, and even everyday items are displaced, circulated, and increasingly intermingled. In recent years, Murillo has traveled extensively throughout the world to research and prepare exhibitions and other projects, making works both in the studio and in unexpected locations. As a result, airplanes, which are able to move more or less freely and without regard for borders, and the contemplative isolation afforded by these long journeys, have become an important site of production for the artist. His large-scale canvases, in turn, are a synthesis in both form and content of his experiences. By combining personal allusions with more universally recognizable references, Murillo aligns these paintings with preceding art-historical movements that conceptualized art not as a hermetic language but rather as a critical tool for interpreting a world outside of itself—comprising, as he notes, “an accumulation of thought, gesture, discourse, action, and motion.” Through his command of gesture, form, and spatial organization, Murillo is able to convey a complex and nuanced understanding of the specific conditions of globalization and its attendant state of flux, while nevertheless maintaining the universality of human experience within this milieu. Published on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition of paintings and works on paper at David Zwirner, Hong Kong, in 2018, the build-up of content and information is accompanied by an essay by curator and writer Victor Wang, who attests to Murillo’s work as being guided by mobility.
