Book excerpt: Skipper Can no Longer Play... Oscar J, is a young boy devoted to his pet dog Skipper, who he has since developed a life long relationship with. Through the course of dog years, Skipper begins to age, becomes ill, and dies. Never having experienced a death of any kind, and its associated grief Oscar J is distraught. However, with the support and comfort provided by mum, Oscar is aware that the pain and sadness he presently feels will eventually pass, and although Skipper will no longer be present for fun and games like every other previous day, his memory can live in Oscar's heart and mind forever. Daddy Can no Longer Stay... A little older from his days with Skipper, Oscar J is being subjected to constant rows, harsh words, slammed doors and silences between his parents. Over the course of weeks he believes that he could be the cause of their distress, and becomes tearful and aggressive as a result of the same. When his behavioural failings begin Oscar's parents are notified by the school, and it is at this point Mr & Mrs J realise the affect that their potential 'break up' is having on their son. Embarrassed and in shock by their thoughtless actions, they both sit and apologise to their son, assuring that through no fault of his own such is being experienced by their family. Although these are changes in life that some may experience, should any separation or divorce come to pass between his dad and mum, the one constant that they can be sure will remain is the love that they have for their son.

Book The Baseball Codes

Download or read book The Baseball Codes written by Jason Turbow and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider’s look at baseball’s unwritten rules, explained with examples from the game’s most fascinating characters and wildest historical moments. Everyone knows that baseball is a game of intricate regulations, but it turns out to be even more complicated than we realize. All aspects of baseball—hitting, pitching, and baserunning—are affected by the Code, a set of unwritten rules that governs the Major League game. Some of these rules are openly discussed (don’t steal a base with a big lead late in the game), while others are known only to a minority of players (don’t cross between the catcher and the pitcher on the way to the batter’s box). In The Baseball Codes, old-timers and all-time greats share their insights into the game’s most hallowed—and least known—traditions. For the learned and the casual baseball fan alike, the result is illuminating and thoroughly entertaining. At the heart of this book are incredible and often hilarious stories involving national heroes (like Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays) and notorious headhunters (like Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale) in a century-long series of confrontations over respect, honor, and the soul of the game. With The Baseball Codes, we see for the first time the game as it’s actually played, through the eyes of the players on the field. With rollicking stories from the past and new perspectives on baseball’s informal rulebook, The Baseball Codes is a must for every fan.

Book excerpt: Over 55% of your day is spent listening; yet only 2% of us have been trained in how to listen. What is poor listening costing you? Do you rush from meeting to meeting, your head buried in the last conversation you had, without time to think of the next? Or feel frustrated with unproductive discussions where the loudest in the room adds limited insight and drowns out everyone else? We usually think of these situations as communication problems; that we have not spoken our needs correctly or clearly. Yet, conflict, chaos and confusion are the costs of not listening. Many communication and listening books say the most important person in a conversation is the speaker - not true! This pocket-sized guide will help you to reconnect with your innate gift of deep listening, to create the right space to listen to yourself before you listen to others. You'll learn to listen beyond the words that are spoken, to add context and meaning and listen in to what's not being said. Deep Listening will help you move from confusion and conflict to thoughtful, insightful and powerful discussions that will transform not just your work, but your whole life.

Book How Not to Build a Boat

Download or read book How Not to Build a Boat written by Jill Dickin Schinas and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When their old GRP yacht was devastated by a Southern Ocean storm, Jill Schinas and her husband, Nick, resolved to build something stronger. Gaily, - and without having researched the matter to the least degree -they threw themselves into the work of designing and constructing the ultimate, ocean-proof, eco-friendly, dream cruising yacht. On their side they had a wealth of sailing experience, which provided a perfect knowledge of what was required, but their only other weapons were irrepressible enthusiasm and the mindset which enables a man to build a radio from a potato or a mast from a lamppost. Had this been a business enterprise no bank would ever have lent the capital, for ranged against the dreamers was a whole battery of forces any one of which would have deterred more realistic people. For a start, neither Jill or Nick had any experience with a welder - and yet they were proposing to build a steel boat. Secondly, they seemed only to have enough money to buy a couple of masts and the sails. Worst of all, they had two kids and a new baby in tow - and no one with a young family ought to attempt anything more ambitious than the washing up. Regardless of these drawbacks, Nick and Jill went ahead. "It'll only take a year and a half," said he, confidently. Fifteen years down the line, Mollymawk is afloat and the family have cruised all over the Atlantic; but the boat is still not finished. This is the tale of what went wrong and what went right. Packed full of advice about such things as ocean-worthy design and sail plans, it will also tell you how to operate a cutting torch, how to avoid a leaky stern-gland, how to pour your own rigging sockets, how to handle a ferocious gander, how to sandblast, how to weld in mid-Atlantic, how to amuse three young children in a cabin space the size of a phone booth... and much, much more besides.
