Book Sustainable Development of Territories in Contexts of Uncertainty

Download or read book Sustainable Development of Territories in Contexts of Uncertainty written by José Cadima Ribeiro and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pursuit of development has increasingly prioritized sustainability. Sustainable approaches to development and adopting people’s well-being as a main goal have substantial implications for the competitiveness of territories. When viewed through a nature lens, sustainability maintains a close connection with circular economy. If sustainability is the paradigm to which the world needs to commit, businesses, policy makers and people have to deal with the difficulties and uncertainties arising from those requirements and other severe phenomena, like international armed conflicts and pandemic crises. By using case studies, this book addresses territorial bottlenecks and grapples with social and developmental challenges. The book intends to function as a practical guide for policymakers and practitioners, providing them with the knowledge necessary to adopt and implement sustainable development strategies. It advocates the implementation of socially inclusive policies and the adoption of innovative governance models able to safeguard democratic principles while enhancing the efficacy of decision-making processes.

Book excerpt: Since its publication in 2006 as Fifty Key Thinkers on Development, this invaluable reference has established itself as the leading biographical handbook in its field, providing a concise and accessible introduction to the lives and key contributions of development thinkers from across the ideological and disciplinary spectrum. This substantially expanded and fully updated second edition in the relaunched series without the numerical constraint includes an additional 24 essays, filling in many gaps in the original selection, greatly improving the gender balance and diversifying coverage to reflect the evolving landscape of development in theory, policy and practice. Book A Brief Economic History of the Amazon 1720 1970

Download or read book A Brief Economic History of the Amazon 1720 1970 written by Francisco de Assis Costa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers 250 years of Amazonian economic history in three chapters focusing on fundamental periods. The first section provides a unique discussion of the dynamics of the colonial Amazonian economy (1720-1822), the role of the religious orders and trade companies, and the formation of a caboclo-peasantry. This is followed by an original analysis of the rubber economy (1850-1920), based on classical and unprecedented data and considering the role of both the caboclo-peasants and the big rubber plots in the mercantile chains. The third chapter presents a pioneering analysis of the rural and urban dynamics of the post-rubber boom era which lasted until the 1960s. Considering the interest that the Amazon arouses around the world, the book will appeal to the general public, and will also draw particular attention from economists, anthropologists, geographers, sociologists and ecologists, who, as researchers or policymakers, are confronted with issues of economic and social development and environmental sustainability in underdeveloped countries.

Book Handbook of Research on Special Economic Zones as Regional Development Enablers

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Special Economic Zones as Regional Development Enablers written by Figueiredo, Paulo Guilherme and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special economic zones (SEZs) are important doorways for countries to attract foreign investment and promote trade. A strong correlation between the creation of SEZs and economic development indicators has also been identified in previous studies, at the municipal level, in China. Thus, the fundamental question that needs to be explored is to what extent SEZs can play the role of development enablers in different regions, development states, and institutional settings. The Handbook of Research on Special Economic Zones as Regional Development Enablers discusses the diverse and international track records in the implementation of SEZs, the interplay of SEZ models and local institutional infrastructure and stakeholders, and the SEZ models that can best fit certain development states and/or settings. Covering topics such as the Belt and Road Initiative, local and national economies, and regional integration, this book is essential for government officials, development officers, scholars, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, public decision makers, aid agencies, company executives, investors, and academicians.

Book World Bank Assistance to Agriculture in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book World Bank Assistance to Agriculture in Sub Saharan Africa written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa is a critical development priority-it has some of the world's poorest countries and during the past two decades the number of poor in the Region has doubled, to 300 million-more than 40 percent of the Region's population. Africa remains behind on most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is unlikely to reach them by 2015. With some of the world's poorest countries, Africa is a development priority for the donor community. A major drag on Africa's development is the underperformance of the critical agriculture sector, which has been neglected both by donors and governments over the past two decades. The sector faces a variety of constraints that are particular to agriculture in Africa and make its development a complex challenge. Poor governance and conflict in several countries further complicate matters. IEG has assessed the development effectiveness of World Bank assistance in addressing constraints to agricultural development in Africa over the period of fiscal 1991-2006.

Book Private Troubles or Public Issues

Download or read book Private Troubles or Public Issues written by Walter Lorenz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bears testimony to the value of a progressive form of academisation of social work education in most European countries, including former communist countries which had to re-establish social work education. It also manifests the confidence of contributors in belonging to a serious academic discipline, and the fruitfulness of bringing research ‘home’ from neighbouring disciplines such as sociology, psychology, social policy, or pedagogy into the mainstream of social work. The contributions to this book converge on a small number of core issues for contemporary social work. These are methodologically the conceptualisation of different and interacting dimensions of diversity, and practically the defence of professionalism and discretion against encroachment by neo-liberal ideologies and cost-cutting regulations. In so doing, this underscores that theory matters in social work. Authentic social work research can demonstrate that social work practice has no reason to shy away from basing itself on evidence and being professionally accountable as long as its notion of evidence recognises and does justice to the complexity of social problems and acknowledges the value of inter-subjectivity in producing useable and ethically grounded evidence. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Social Work.
