Book Locust and Grasshopper Fauna Orthoptera

Download or read book Locust and Grasshopper Fauna Orthoptera written by Hirdesh Kumar and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the economically important species of locusts and grasshoppers belong to Superfamily Acridoidea. They constitute an economically important group of Orthopterous pests infesting a number of cultivated and non-cultivated crops and are well known for their destructiveness all over the world. They are serious pests of agricultural crops, pastures and forests. They are also called short-horned grasshoppers in contrast to Ensifera (Tettigonoidea and Grylloidea) or long-horned grasshoppers which constitute one of the other suborder of Orthoptera. Suborder Caelifera is divided into four superfamilies viz. Acridoidea, Tridactyloidea, Tetrigoidea and Eumastacoidea. Acridoidea possess short antennae, usually shorter than the body, a short and stout ovipositor and their tarsi are three-segmented. The other superfamilies of Caelifera are easily recognizable at sight and are not frequently encountered. Superfamily Acridoidea has shown maximum diversity and divided into various families of which family Acrididae is widely distributed in India. The Superfamily Acridoidea constitute the largest and most diverse group amongst the Orthoptera. A very high degree of adaptive radiation in the feeding apparatus of this group of Orthoptera is indicative of their diverse feeding habits. The present proposal was aimed at studying large number of species of Acrididae which were collected from different regions of North India. The status of various characters used in the identification were judged on the basis of their consistency and variation to ascertain their importance in the group. An in-depth study helps in understanding the biodiversity and phylogeny of this group. The identification keys have been prepared to make identification easy. It is hoped that this book will bring the nomenclature of Indian Acrididae up to-date and will be useful to workers both in applied and basic research. The object of this book is to provide taxonomist, economic entomologist, agriculturist, ecologist and others with up to-date information on the valid genera and species along with their distribution in different parts of the country. The distribution of each species are given in the text. The authors have included their own observations on the distribution of Acrididae in North Indian regions which was ignored by earlier workers. The proposal has a great importance from the point of view of both applied and fundamental knowledge. Visualizing the economic importance of these pests the present book has been prepared.Work done and objectives achieved 1. Geographic area under North India have been extensively surveyed and Acridid samples have been collected.2. The collected specimens were studied in detail and described and illustrated taxonomically.3. Genitalic plates of the described taxa have been provided that complement the descriptions.4. Color photographs of the taxa have also been added to the descriptions that ease the identification of the same.5. A master chart depicting total specimens, their distribution, concentration areas, host plants etc. has been provided.6. Host range has been provided along with information on habitat, latitude and altitude..

Book A Revision of the Grasshopper Genus Orthochtha and Allies Orthoptera Acrididae Acridinae

Download or read book A Revision of the Grasshopper Genus Orthochtha and Allies Orthoptera Acrididae Acridinae written by G. B. Popov and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of the large grasshopper genus Orthochtha are widely distributed throughout the Afrotropics with some representatives in India and the Far East. The taxonomy of the genus has, however, long been recognized by acridologists to be unsatisfactory. This publication provides a thorough revision of Orthochtha together with seven allied genera, of which three are erected here. In all, 36 species and 11 subspecies are treated, of which 16 species and 5 subspecies are described here as new. All taxa are diagnosed, illustrated, keyed, mapped and their affinities discussed. The biogeography of the group is considered and a synopsis of the available information of the biology, ecology and economic importance given for each species. This book will be of use both to taxonomists and to agricultural field workers, particularly in Africa.

Book Monograph of the Afrotropical species of Scelio Latreille Hymenoptera Platygastridae egg parasitoids of acridid grasshoppers Orthoptera Acrididae

Download or read book Monograph of the Afrotropical species of Scelio Latreille Hymenoptera Platygastridae egg parasitoids of acridid grasshoppers Orthoptera Acrididae written by Matthew J. Yoder and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasitic wasps of the genus Scelio (Hymenoptera: Platygastri-dae) attack and destroy the eggs of short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididae). Included among these hosts are some of the most destructive of all insects, the plague locusts. As a result, species of Scelio are potential allies in the biological control of these pests. This paper is the first comprehensive examination of the species of Scelio of the Afrotropical region in over 50 years. A total of 62 species were found, 77% of which are new to science. Descriptions and keys for identification are provided, and each species is extensively illustrated. This work is a product of the Platygastroidea Planetary Biodiversity Program and was conducted using biodiversity informatics tools and applications developed as part of that project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 9 of Chemical Mutagens consists mainly of chapters discussing the development and validation of short-term assays to detect the mutagenic effects of environmental chemicals. These chapters include an assay with the grasshopper neuroblast, a comparison of mutagenic responses of human lung-derived and skin-derived diploid fibroblasts, a forward-mutation assay in Salmonella, a multigene sporulation test in Bacillus subtilis, a specific locus assay in mouse lymphoma cells, a study of the induction of bacteriophage lambda, and the granuloma pouch assay. In addition, there are two chapters on the identification of mutagens in cooked food and in human feces. Book Grasshoppers and Grassland Health

Download or read book Grasshoppers and Grassland Health written by Jeffrey A. Lockwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acridids (grasshoppers and locusts) can range from being rare curiosities to abundant menaces. Some are threatened with extinction and become subjects of intensive conservation efforts, while others are devastating pests and become the objects of massive control programmes. Even within a species, there are times when the animal is so abundant that its crushed masses cause the wheels of trains to skid (the Rocky Mountain grasshopper, Melanoplus spretus Walsh in western North America in the 1860s and I 870s), while at other times the animal is alarmingly scarce (the Rocky Mountain grasshopper went extinct in the early 1900s). Why are there these extremes in one insect family, and even in a single species? The NATO workshop examined this paradox and its implications for Environmental Security, which must address both the elements of land use (agricultural production and pest management) and conservation of biodiversity. The reconciliation of these objectives clearly demands a critical assessment of current knowledge and policies, identification of future research, and close working relationships among scientists. Insects can present two clear faces, as well as the intervening gradation. These extremes require us to respond in two ways: conservation of scarce species and suppression of abundant (harmful) species. But perhaps most important, these opposite poles also provide the opportunity for an exchange of information and insight.
