Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The οiκουμενη or world of the Roman Empire, being a compact mass, and consisting of the countries lying around the Mediterranean, was from the foundation of Constantinople or new Rome divided into two great halves or lobes, the " Eastern " and the " Western," Empires within an Empire, at first united, afterwards separate and even hostile; in one of which the Greek, in the other the Latin tongue predominated. The Christian Church converting and incorporating into itself the population of the Roman world, and triumphing openly in the time of Constantine, and thenceforth entering into close relations with the civil Empire, became itself also (ecumenical in the Roman sense, that is, the Church of the Roman world, (οiκουμενη) and with the Roman Empire came to be outwardly distinguishable into two great masses or lobes, the " Eastern " and the " Western," the " Greek " and the " Latin."The Western Roman Empire being overrun by barbarous nations came to an end; but its language, laws, and civilization, and the religion of its Christian inhabitants being communicated to those nations which overran it, it was in a certain sense restored and revived in the Frankish and in the German-Roman Empires of the Most. Thus the οiκουμενη or habitable world, instead of being curtailed, expanded with the changes of the West; and the Church which expanded with it, and which was in great measure the cause of its expansion, still preserved its aspect of I restem geographically, of Latin in ritual and language, and of Homan from the seat of its central government. From the middle of the ninth at the earliest, or of the eleventh century at the latest, the Churches of the original Eastern and of the renewed Western Empire, which had been before as two great lobes of one body, were separated in communion the one from the other. Still, the idea of there being but one οiκουμενη, or civilized world, consisting of the double Roman Empire, survived; and also the idea of there being but one Church, corresponding to the (ecumenicity of the double Roman Empire, and aspiring in principle to be also Catholic or universal in the widest sense, subsisted still on hath sides.

Book excerpt: "How can you believe all this stuff? This is the number-one question Catholics get asked and, sometimes, we ask ourselves. Why do we believe that God exists, that he became a man and came to save us, that what looks like a wafer of bread is actually his body? Why do we believe that he inspired a holy book and founded an infallible Church to teach us the one true way to live? Ever since he became Catholic, Trent Horn has spent a lot of time answering these questions, trying to explain to friends, family, and total strangers the reasons for his Catholic faith. Some didn't believe in God, or even in the existence of truth. Others said they were spiritual but didn't think you needed religion to be happy. Some were Christians who thought Catholic doctrines over-complicated the pure gospel. And some were fellow Catholics who had a hard time understanding everything they professed to believe on Sunday. Why We're Catholic assembles the clearest, friendliest, most helpful answers that Trent learned to give to all these people and more. Beginning with how we can know reality and ending with our hope of eternal life, it s the perfect way to help skeptics and seekers (or Catholics who want to firm up their faith) understand the evidence that bolsters our belief and brings us joy" --

Download or read book A History of the Popes written by John W. O'Malley, SJ and published by Government Institutes. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Popes tells the story of the oldest living institution in the Western world—the papacy. From its origins in Saint Peter, Jesus' chief disciple, through Pope Benedict XVI today, the popes have been key players in virtually all of the great dramas of the western world in the last two thousand years. Acclaimed church historian John W. O'Malley's engaging narrative examines the 265 individuals who have claimed to be Peter's successors. Rather than describe each pope one by one, the book focuses on the popes that shaped pivotal moments in both church and world history. The author does not shy away from controversies in the church, and includes legends like Pope Joan and a comprehensive list of popes and antipopes to help readers get a full picture of the papacy. This simultaneously reverent yet critical book will appeal to readers interested in both religion and history as it chronicles the saints and sinners who have led the Roman Catholic Church over the past 2000 years. The author draws from his popular audio CD lecture series on the topic, 2,000 Years of Papal History, available through Now You Know Media (www.nowyouknowmedia.com).

Book Stolen Churches or Bridges to Orthodoxy

Download or read book Stolen Churches or Bridges to Orthodoxy written by Vladimir Latinovic and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout their shared history, Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches have lived through a very complex and sometimes tense relationship – not only theologically, but also politically. In most cases such relationships remain to this day; indeed, in some cases the tension has increased. In July 2019, scholars of both traditions gathered in Stuttgart, Germany, for an unprecedented conference devoted to exploring and overcoming the division between these churches. This book, the first in a two-volume set of the essays presented at the conference, explores historical and theological themes with the goal of healing memories and inspiring a direct dialogue between Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. Like the conference, the volume brings together representatives of these Churches, as well as theologians from different geographical contexts where tensions are the greatest. The published essays represent the great achievements of the conference: willingness to engage in dialogue, general openness to new ideas, and opportunities to address difficult questions and heal inherited wounds.

Book Orthodoxy and Catholicism A Comparison

Download or read book Orthodoxy and Catholicism A Comparison written by Dave Armstrong and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been my strong desire for some time now to revise my book in order to emphasize ecumenism and unity proportionately a lot more than in the first (2004) edition. I'm much more interested in finding common ground. I've also learned a thing or two about Orthodoxy over the past decade. I wanted this volume to be able to read by Orthodox and also Eastern Catholics, without having seizures or going into apoplectic fits (caused by my ignorance or overly polemical or biased writing). I exaggerate, of course, but perhaps not by much! Toward that end I have enlisted a very qualified Eastern Catholic friend to contribute significant portions to the revised edition: Fr. Deacon Daniel G. Dozier. The revision remains an apologetic for Catholicism and respectful critique of Orthodoxy, but now it also includes friendly ecumenical discussion and dialogue: feedback and input from the Eastern theological perspective. The overall tone, tenor, and goal is considerably different. Unity is stressed as much as apologetics.
