Book The Russian Orthodox Church and Modernity

Download or read book The Russian Orthodox Church and Modernity written by Regina Elsner and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) faced various iterations of modernization throughout its history. This conflicted encounter continues in the ROC’s current resistance against—what it perceives as—Western modernity including liberal and secular values. This study examines the historical development of the ROC’s arguments against—and sometimes preferences for—modernization and analyzes which positions ended up influencing the official doctrine. The book’s systematic analysis of dogmatic treatises shows the ROC’s considerable ability of constructive engagement with various aspects of the modern world. Balancing between theological traditions of unity and plurality, the ROC’s today context of operating within an authoritarian state appears to tip the scale in favor of unity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunities opened up by the Gorbachev reforms have shown that religion is one of the most significant dynamic forces in Soviet society. Yet few scholars have attempted to relate the study of churches and religious movements in recent centuries to the politics and culture of the Soviet Union. To remedy this deficiency, leading western experts on Christianity in the Eastern Slav lands gathered at a conference in London on the occasion of the millennium of the baptism of Rus'. Their papers present unexpected and fascinating insights into an under-rated but crucial aspect of the life of the Soviet peoples.

Book excerpt: Few of the struggles Russia has undergone since the fall of Communism have been fiercer than that being fought between the long-repressed Russian Orthodox Church and a host of groups seeking to evangelize the Russian people. This volume assesses the legitimacy of the Orthodox attempt to reclaim the spiritual and moral heart of the Russian people and to retain their adherence in a new, pluralistic world where many Christians and followers of other traditions seek the right to establish themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orthodox Missionary Society of Russia Glory to God, it has long been time for our laity, official and unofficial, to unite with the Church authorities in common labors for the good of the Orthodox faith and Church. It is time, in works of this kind, to lay aside foreign ideas, and to see things from the Orthodox point of View - recognizing that it is not for the Clergy alone to care for the Church, but to regard the work of spreading and upholding the truth and the Church as equally important for - equally obligatory upon - the laity and the clergy. Such harmonious action would bring out the true strength of the Orthodox Church, and be a true basis for hopes of success in all designs for her good.
