Book excerpt: The Christian faith presents a distinctive vision of last things: that God in Christ aims to reconcile the world to himself, and through his Spirit and a new people, to set all things to right. This good news is for all nations and peoples, but for too long the Christian doctrine of eschatology has focused on debates and arguments rooted solely in the Western church. In All Things New, leading theologians and biblical scholars from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America offer readers a glimpse of how Christians around the globe are perceiving and describing the Christian hope. The result is a remarkably refreshing and distinctive vision of eschatology guaranteed to raise new questions and add new insights to the global church’s vision of the eschaton.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes excerpts of passages from the Bible *Includes a bibliography for further reading Lay people, scientists, philosophers, and theologians have long theorized about death, immortality, and eternity. With science making huge strides forward, some now suggest that science may well be able to extend life, making immortality scientifically feasible, but put simply, nobody can see the future, which relies on creative imaginations. Given that immortality has been out of reach throughout human history, death has always been a central focus of life, and a belief in the afterlife is a fundamental tenet of many religions. Not surprisingly, a plethora of different views exist, and Christian eschatology is mostly unique, without signs of pantheism or dualism and no doctrine of pre-existence or any trace of Egyptian or Greek ideas or practices. Even those who don't practice Christianity know that the religion deals heavily with life, death, and the end of the world. Those with real faith in the God of the Bible believe that Christian thinking is not based on human imagination but on the Word and authority of God. Christian dogmas are Scriptural, meaning they can be traced back to the Bible, and reformed theology insists that all authority is seated in the ultimate author of Scripture: God. This implies that the Christian dogma of future events is not influenced by people themselves. If Christian dogma relies on the Bible, many could be forgiven for assuming that there should be a general agreement within Christianity about the end times, but due to the historic fragmentation within various Christian denominations, there is little agreement between the vast array of Christian churches regarding the end of the world. As such, Christian eschatology is confusing and hugely complex as a whole. The main reason for this is that the Bible does not paint a clear picture of the end times, and Biblical prophesies often use symbolic language that makes interpretation difficult. To complicate this further, the different branches of Christianity follow different hermeneutical strategies, leading to vastly different conclusions. This problem has become increasingly toxic over the last two centuries, which is unfortunate since the differences are based on subjective interpretations. While there are similarities in the theologies of the more orthodox churches (such as the Presbyterian, Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and the Roman Catholic churches), the confusion is caused by two extremes: theological liberalism that adopted Kantian and evolutionary principles and the many independent churches that follow very literal Biblical interpretations. Both groups can often be defined by what they oppose rather than their dogmas. Christian Eschatology: The History and Legacy of Christianity's Beliefs about the End of the World analyzes how Christianity's views on the end times were shaped, how they evolved over time, and the differences in beliefs among various Christians. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Christian eschatology like never before.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Orthodox Christian Theology

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Orthodox Christian Theology written by Elizabeth Theokritoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodox Christian theology is often presented as the direct inheritor of the doctrine and tradition of the early Church. But continuity with the past is only part of the truth; it would be false to conclude that the eastern section of the Christian Church is in any way static. Orthodoxy, building on its patristic foundations, has blossomed in the modern period. This volume focuses on the way Orthodox theological tradition is understood and lived today. It explores the Orthodox understanding of what theology is: an expression of the Church's life of prayer, both corporate and personal, from which it can never be separated. Besides discussing aspects of doctrine, the book portrays the main figures, themes and developments that have shaped Orthodox thought. There is particular focus on the Russian and Greek traditions, as well as the dynamic but less well-known Antiochian tradition and the Orthodox presence in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number one assault on Orthodox Christianity today is the reemergence of the Hymenaeus and Philetus heresy in saying the resurrection is past and so by default so is the second coming, fulfilled in AD 70. This view is known as Full, Realized, or Hyper Eschatology. In this view it many foundational doctrines, and yet still wants to be labeled as Christian and is mutating from within the Church of Christ.Attacks against the church come from many different directions but the one that hurts the most is the one that comes from within. In the midst of church turmoil one more assault has risen up from the enemy, from within the church, and so claims to be a "Orthodox Christian" doctrine, yet this doctrine denies the bodily return of Christ, the ongoing incarnation, and the bodily resurrection of the saints in a future appearing of Christ. The AD 70 doctrine that is labeled as Full, Realized, or Hyper Preterism is clearly rejected by Orthodox Christianity but because of the aggressive nature of the adherents in seeking to reform Christianity with its myths and doctrine of demons, ignoring it is no longer an option. You tube videos and FACEBOOK groups are becoming prolific and academic papers are being written and debates publicized but a clear refutation of the specifics is absent from the Church landscape. People want to know why it's wrong because the arguments being presented are subtle and peppered with truth. The way in which people are introduced to the doctrine and in the way it is advertised by its adherents, is disarming if not outright deceptive as they seek to gain followers. They are not labeled as a separate denomination or religious group but thrives within the Churches of Christ from which it started and spreads. Efforts to stifle the movement are non-existent on a "Denominational" level. This work goes through the main arguments supporting the Pre-Millennial position in opposition to the Dispensationalist and Preterist paradigms. This work also encompasses the foundational arguments given by Full Preterist for their paradigm and provides the answers through the timeless Theology of the church.

Book The Hope of the Early Church

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outline of the development of eschatological thought in the first seven centuries of Christianity. It is the first attempt, in any language, to give a comprehensive description of the origins of Christian eschatology, as it expanded from its Jewish roots and Jesus' preaching, and as it drew upon the philosophical and folkloric notions of death and its aftermath held by the peoples of the Mediterranean. Based on a study of the original texts, the book considers not only the eschatology of the Greek and Latin fathers, but also what can be known from the early Syriac, Coptic, and Armenian Christian literature. Brief and clearly-focused in its range of subjects, the book provides an accessible historical survey of a centrally important aspect of early Christian doctrine. This book is an outline of the development of eschatological thought in the first seven centuries of Christianity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of a detailed and systematic exposition of the history, canonical structure, doctrine, moral and social teaching, liturgical services, and spiritual life of the Orthodox Church. The purpose of this series is to present Orthodox Christianity as an integrated theological and liturgical system, in which all elements are interconnected. Theology finds its expression and is shaped in the liturgical experience and church art-including icons, singing, and architecture. The services, in their turn, influence the ascetic practice and the personal piety of each Christian; they shape the moral and social teaching of the Church as well as its relation to other Christian confessions, non-Christian religions, and the secular world. The first volume provided an account of the historical arc of the Orthodox Church during the first ten centuries after Christ's nativity, then examined the canonical structure of the Orthodox Church. This volume examines the sources of Orthodox doctrine in Scripture and Tradition; its teaching on God in Trinity and Unity, in his essence and in his energies; on the world and man; on Jesus Christ, the incarnate God; on the Church, the body of Christ; on the Theotokos, Mary; and on eschatology, the last things.

Book On the Making of Man

Book excerpt: “This is the book of the generation of heaven and earth ,” saith the Scripture, when all that is seen was finished, and each of the things that are betook itself to its own separate place, when the body of heaven compassed all things round, and those bodies which are heavy and of downward tendency, the earth and the water, holding each other in, took the middle place of the universe; while, as a sort of bond and stability for the things that were made, the Divine power and skill was implanted in the growth of things, guiding all things with the reins of a double operation (for it was by rest and motion that it devised the genesis of the things that were not, and the continuance of the things that are), driving around, about the heavy and changeless element contributed by the creation that does not move, as about some fixed path, the exceedingly rapid motion of the sphere, like a wheel, and preserving the indissolubility of both by their mutual action, as the circling substance by its rapid motion compresses the compact body of the earth round about, while that which is firm and unyielding, by reason of its unchanging fixedness, continually augments the whirling motion of those things which revolve round it, and intensity is produced in equal measure in each of the natures which thus differ in their operation, in the stationary nature, I mean, and in the mobile revolution; for neither is the earth shifted from its own base, nor does the heaven ever relax in its vehemence, or slacken its motion.

This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eschatology is the study of the last things: death, judgment, the afterlife, and the end of the world. Through centuries of Christian thoughtfrom the early Church fathers through the Middle Ages and the Reformationthese issues were of the utmost importance. In other religions, too, eschatological concerns were central. After the Enlightenment, though, many religious thinkers began to downplay the importance of eschatology which, in light of rationalism, came to be seen as something of an embarrassment. The twentieth century, however, saw the rise of phenomena that placed eschatology back at the forefront of religious thought. From the rapid expansion of fundamentalist forms of Christianity, with their focus on the end times; to the proliferation of apocalyptic new religious movements; to the recent (and very public) debates about suicide, martyrdom, and paradise in Islam, interest in eschatology is once again on the rise. In addition to its popular resurgence, in recent years some of the worlds most important theologians have returned eschatology to its former position of prominence. The Oxford Handbook of Eschatology will provide an important critical survey of this diverse body of thought and practice from a variety of perspectives: biblical, historical, theological, philosophical, and cultural. This volume will be the primary resource for students, scholars, and others interested in questions of our ultimate existence.

Book excerpt: "The following efforts bear the title Theology of Hope, not because they set out once again to present eschatology as a separate doctrine and to compete with the well known textbooks. Rather, their aim is to show how theology can set out from hope and begin to consider its theme in an eschatological light. For this reason they inquire into the ground of the hope of Christian faith and into the responsible exercise of this hope in thought and action in the world today. The various critical discussions should not be understood as rejections and condemnations. They are necessary conversations on a common subject which is so rich that it demands continual new approaches."

Book excerpt: Among the twentieth-century Orthodox theologians Paul Evdokimov (1901-1970) has without doubt achieved a position of preeminence. Born in St. Petersburg and emigrated to Paris in 1923, Evdokimov was educated at the Sorbonne and Aix-en-Provence and taught at the Institut Saint Serge until his death in 1970. He was very active in the ecumenical movement, especially in the World Council of Churches. He was also the official Orthodox observer at the Second Vatican Council. This book, the first full-length English study of Evdokimov's theology, concentrates on culture, eschatology, and iconography, three central pillars of the Evdokimovian theological edifice. According to Evdokimov, everything in human culture must be viewed in light of the End, the already-realized-and-yet-to-come escha- tological fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The symbol and embodiment of this eschatology is the icon which makes present and participates in the transfigured reality of the Kingdom of God.
