Book Orthodox and Alternative Medicine

Download or read book Orthodox and Alternative Medicine written by Mike Saks and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2003-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `There's no book like it. It's Saks' subject and he's good' - Roy Porter This fascinating book explores the changing relationship between orthodox and alternative medicine in Britain and the United States from the sixteenth century to the present day. Mike Saks sees the development of orthodox and alternative medicine as two sides of the same coin and his analysis centers on the role of professionalization in health care. In the sixteenth century, the line between orthodox and alternative medicine was blurred. By the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the increasing professionalization of orthodox bio-medicine had marginalized medical alternatives. In recent years, following the growth of a strong counter-culture in the 1960s and 1970s, perceptions of the relationship between the two forms of practice have begun to change again. The de-professionalization of orthodox medicine is being debated, while ironically, alternative medicine has become increasingly professionalized. Mike Saks considers the political dynamics of the process of professionalization, and looks at the dilemmas posed for both medical orthodoxy and alternative medicine in the development of a more integrated health care system in Britain and the United States in the future.

Book excerpt: In the Eagle’s Way: The Importance of Love in Healthcare, the author, a general practitioner, looks back at the changes he has seen over fifty years of study and practice of medicine. Remarkable advances in medicine and surgery have been accompanied by the growth of alternative medicine. He sees the emergence of holistic/integrative medicine as an important development in the evolution of healthcare. In this guide, he explores the principles and philosophies of alternative medicine and its complementary relationship with traditional medicine. The underlying principle of orthodox medicine is fighting disease; in contrast, the underlying principle of alternative medicine is embracing disease, an approach consistent with the new paradigm of unity. Both principles are varied yet powerful. He believes that maintenance of scientific standards dictates that most alternative therapies will remain outside the parameters of orthodox medicine but will be complementary to it. Conventional medicine is intellectual, sensory, head-based, and extraverted in its approach, whereas alternative medicine, especially the new psychotherapies, tends to be intuitive, heartbased, and introverted. The latter tends to go with the flow rather than have set standards of treatment. Practitioners of holistic and integrative medicine using both systems are often viewed as the healers of the future. While both systems can offer help to the patient, the most powerful force in healing remains unconditional love in the form of nonjudgmental respect, care, trust, and compassion. Dr. Johnston presents this as the central core of holistic and integrative medicine in The Eagle’s Way.

Book excerpt: The personal testimony of individuals engaged in healing practices and the opposing voices of orthodox and alternative medicines are the center of Healing Powers. Focusing on medical norms and practices and on competing philosophies of the mind, the body, reality, and rationality across radically different "belief systems", Fred Frohock clarifies the social and legal dilemmas represented by "scientific medicine" and "alternative care." "Frohock goes beyond the often irreconcilable differences between scientific biomedicine and alternative care by clarifying the social and legal dilemmas they present. . . . A noteworthy contribution forcing us to rethink what medical care is all about."—Jeffrey Michael Clare, Journal of the American Medical Association "The book does more and better than simply provide a social-scientific proposal. It also gives not only a hearing but a voice to those who follow alternative therapies. . . . Frohock's accounts of their stories—along with the stories of the medical professionals—are eloquent and fascinating."—Allen Verhey, Medical Humanities Review "Contains a storehouse of valuable information about the historical, philosophical, and psychological bases of alternative approaches to healing."—Marshall B. Kapp, New England Journal of Medicine "Frohock introduces us to the scientific naturopaths and to physicians who believe in the mind's power to heal, to charismatics who believe in but cannot explain their powers, to those who test God and those who merely accept. He writes so well that I felt I had met these people."—Arthur W. Frank, Christian Century

Book Alternative Medicine

Download or read book Alternative Medicine written by Roberta Bivins and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walk into the local health food shop or pick up today's paper and the chances are that you'll see adverts for acupuncture and herbal medicine, hypnotists and homeopaths. Some doctors and scientists mourn the lost lustre of mainstream medicine and complain about a new breed of 'irrational' consumer. But what exactly is 'alternative' medicine? Is the astonishing popularity of alternative and multicultural medicine really such a recent development? And, given the success story of modern biomedical science, why are alternative and traditional treatments now so fashionable? Has the impersonal chill of high-tech medicine driven consumers into the arms of charismatic quacks? Or is it the cost of western medicine that makes its competitors look so attractive? Do patients seek hope, holism, or just the thrill of rebellion? This book seeks answers to all these questions and more. Comparing the medical systems of China, India, and the west - both mainstream and alternative - Roberta Bivins shows how medical expertise has migrated from one culture to another. From acupuncture in Regency England to homeopathy in the 'Wild West', Bivins unearths the roots of today's distinctions between alternative, complementary, and orthodox medicine, and shows how popular interest in medical alternatives - often of exotic origin - is a phenomenon with a long and fascinating pedigree.
