Book excerpt: Orlando Furioso ("The Frenzy of Orlando", more literally "Mad Orlando") is an Italian romantic epic by Ludovico Ariosto, published in its complete form in 1532 and exerting a wide influence on later culture. It is a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's unfinished romance Orlando Innamorato ("Orlando in Love"). From the backdrop of war between Charlemagne and his Christian paladins, and the Saracen army attempting to invade Europe, the poem wanders at will from Japan to the Hebrides, and includes many fantastical elements, such as a trip to the moon and an array of fantastical creatures including a gigantic sea monster and the hippogriff. Many themes are interwoven in its complicated, episodic structure, the most important being the paladin Orlando's unrequited love for the pagan princess Angelica, which develops into the madness of the title. At 38,736 lines, Ariosto's work is one of the longest poems in European literature.

Ludovico Ariosto continues the story’s fusion of French and British legends as well as including material from Greek and Latin literature. The Saracens and Christians are fighting over control of Europe. Agramant, the King of Africa, and his allies lay siege to Paris and Charlemagne’s forces. Meanwhile, Orlando, one of Charlemagne’s famous paladins, is returning to France with the captured pagan princess Angelica. Her beauty incites Knight Rinaldo to duel Orlando for her love. During the fight, she escapes. This tale of war, adventure, sorcery, romance, humor, tragedy, and redemption has influenced famous writers like Spenser and Shakespeare, and continues to inspire writers to this day. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: This work is a continuation of the "Orlando Innamorato" of Matteo Maria Boiardo, which was left unfinished upon the author's death in 1494. It begins more or less at the point where Boiardo left it.This is a brief synopsis of Boiardo's work, omitting most of the numerous digressions and incidental episodes associated with these events:To the court of King Charlemagne comes Angelica (daughter to the king of Cathay, or India) and her brother Argalia. Angelica is the most beautiful woman any of the Peers have ever seen, and all want her. However, in order to take her as wife they must first defeat Argalia in combat. The two most stricken by her are Orlando and Ranaldo ("Rinaldo" in Rose). When Argalia falls to the heathen knight Ferrau, Angelica flees - with Orlando and Ranaldo in hot pursuit. Along the way, both Angelica and Ranaldo drink magic waters - Angelica is filled with a burning love for Ranaldo, but Ranaldo is now indifferent.Eventually, Orlando and Ranaldo arrive at Angelica's castle.Others also gather at Angelica's castle, including Agricane, Kingof Tartary; Sacripant, King of Circassia; Agramante, King ofAfrica and Marfisa ("Marphisa" in Rose), an Asian warrior-Queen.Except for Orlando and Ranaldo, all are heathen.Meanwhile, France is threatened by heathen invaders. Led by KingGradasso of Sericana (whose principal reason for going to war isto obtain Orlando's sword, Durindana) and King Rodomonte ofSarzia, a Holy War between Pagans and Christians ensues.

Slavitt's translation of Orlando Furioso ("Mad Orlando"), one of the great literary achievements of the Italian Renaissance, is a publishing event. With this lively new verse translation, Slavitt introduces readers to Ariosto's now neglected masterpiece - a poem whose impact on Western literature can scarcely be exaggerated. Slavitt's translation captures the energy, comedy, and great fun of Ariosto's Italian.
