Book Linguistic Theory and South Asian Languages

Download or read book Linguistic Theory and South Asian Languages written by Josef Bayer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Asian languages, mainly Indo-Aryan and Dravidian, have become a focus of interest in the formal study of language as a natural consequence of the research program of the Principle and Parameters approach and an enforced interest in exploring the parametrical space of human language. The contributions to the present volume combine theoretical reasoning in syntax and phonology with a comparative research agenda in which South Asian languages figure prominently. The topics range from issues of clause structure, serial verb constructions, cleft- and question formation, to the question of what the proper syntactic format of modification should be, issues of binding theory and raising, and issues of complementation, the clausal periphery and clausal typing. The collection of articles concludes with two chapters on Dravidian and comparative phonology and a chapter on the shaping of phonological awareness by different writing systems. The authors and the editors devote this piece of work to Professor K.A. Jayaseelan, one of present-day India s most influential linguists.

Book Complex Verb Formation

Download or read book Complex Verb Formation written by D. Gary Miller and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-01-21 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation of complex verb formation seeks to identify and clarify the way(s) in which a base verb becomes 'complex'. The author carefully considers both the syntactic and the morphological side of this question, and in doing so brings a wealth of data from very diverse languages to bear on claims made about the relationship between syntactic and morphological structure. The work takes the radical position that most data admit of either a syntactic (Phrase Structure) or lexical analysis because both are likely to be valid — under different circumstances. Both approaches are consistently defended in an attempt to illustrate the complementarity of the two and ascertain which is the better formulation for a given set of data. Placing his analysis firmly in the context of historical linguistics, the author shows that it is necessary to admit the possibility of lexicalization. The book pays attention to many alternative viewpoints, and its value is further enhanced by a 40-page bibliography. Miller's insightful treatment of questions of lexical decomposition, the relationship of morphology to syntax, and the encoding of argument structure on verbs make this a work of the utmost importance for syntacticians as well as morphologists.

Book Dravidian Syntax and Universal Grammar

Download or read book Dravidian Syntax and Universal Grammar written by K.A. Jayaseelan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises twenty eight papers selected from the widely known work of K.A. Jayaseelan and R. Amritavalli on Dravidian. Collectively, these papers cover the entire area of Dravidian syntax: they range from broad questions such as sentence structure and word order to more particular questions such as the morphological basis of anaphora, the genesis of lexical categories, the morpho-syntax of quantifiers, and the syntax and semantics of questions. Important universalist claims are embedded in these essays; for this reason, this volume will be of interest also to a student of the general theory of syntax. No future discussion of Dravidian (or South Asian) languages is possible without taking into account the insightful analyses set forth in these pages.

Book Case Valency and Transitivity

Download or read book Case Valency and Transitivity written by L. I. Kulikov and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts of case, valency and transitivity belong to the most discussed topics of modern linguistics. On the one hand, they are crucially connected with morphological aspects of the clause, including case marking, person agreement and voice. On the other hand, they are related to several semantic issues such as the meaning of case, semantico-syntactic verbal classes, and the semantic correlates of transitivity. The volume unifies papers written within different theoretical frameworks and representing variegated approaches (Optimality Theory, Government and Binding, various versions of the Functional approach, Cross-linguistic and Typological analyses), containing both numerous new findings in individual languages and valuable observations and generalizations related to case, valency and transitivity.

Book Light Verb Constructions as Complex Verbs

Download or read book Light Verb Constructions as Complex Verbs written by Anna Pompei and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of light verb constructions has been traditionally related to the ‘insignificance’ of the verb, which is described as a grammatical item only codifying TAM system and φ-features, whereas the whole predicative content is thought to be conveyed by the noun. This book deals with the light verb constructions as instances of complex verbs, intended as multi-predicational but monoclausal structures. This allows to deepen the actual verb lightness, the effective noun predicativity, as well as their effect on the cohesion of the construction. The papers in this volume reflect on the concrete contribution of noun and verb to the event and argument structure, and on the relevance of semantically different noun classes for the verb selection. From different theoretical approaches, data of a great variety of languages are investigated, such as Indo-European languages – both modern (Germanic, Slavic, Romance and Iranian languages) and ancient (Latin and Ancient Greek) – but also Mandarin Chinese, and different polysynthetic languages (e.g. Ket, Nivkh, Murrinh-Patha, Kiowa, Bininj Gun-wok, Ainu). The range of topics, languages and perspectives presented in this book make it of great interest to both theoretical and applied linguists.

Book The Syntactic Structure of Verb Particle Constructions

Download or read book The Syntactic Structure of Verb Particle Constructions written by Christina Gieseler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: Introduction Verb-Particle Constructions occur in “most, if not all, of the Germanic languages” (Dehé: 2002:1, Olsen 2000:149). They are also known as “verb-particle combinations”, “phrasal verbs”, “particle verbs” (PVs) or “separable (complex) verbs” (cf. Dehé ibid., cf. Dehé, Jackendoff, McIntyre, Urban 2002:1). VPCs formally consist of “a verbal stem and an intransitive prepositional or adverbial element”, a so-called particle (Olsen 2000:149). In linguistic research, “there is no uncontroversial definition of particles which reliably demarcates them from similar items and has cross-linguistic validity” (Dehé et al. 2002:3) [...] According to Dehé (2002), “the perhaps most striking property of transitive PV’s in English is their appearance in two alternating orders“ (3) as the English particle “can appear on either side of a direct object, unless it is a (non-contrastively accented) pronoun” (Dehé et al. 2002:2, cf. Jackendoff ibid.). In the so-called continuous order the particle is “adjacent to the verb and precedes the DP-complement” as in (1) (Dehé 2002:3-4). In the discontinuous order “the particle follows the DP-object” (cf. 2) (ibid.). In this order the use of unstressed pronouns is obligatory as illustrated in (3) (ibid.; the following examples are borrowed from Dehé:ibid. as well). (1) He wiped off the table. (2) He wiped the table off. (3) a. He wiped it off. b. *He wiped off it. Concerning the syntactic structure of English VPCs, several questions might be asked: 1. How does the syntactic structure of VPCs in English look like? 2. How do the alternating word orders come about? 3. Which of the word orders is the underlying one? Linguists have developed many different approaches to the syntactic structure of VPCs. This paper is going to focus attention on three different syntactic analyses for English VPCs and attempts to answer the questions posed above. Before presenting the different approaches, some basic characteristics of English VPCs will be introduced. Afterwards, the approaches, namely the Small Clause analysis according to Kayne (1985) and two different complex head analyses by Johnson (1991) and Dehé (2002), will be elucidated and discussed.

Book Verb Phrase Syntax A Parametric Study of English and Spanish

Download or read book Verb Phrase Syntax A Parametric Study of English and Spanish written by Karen Zagona and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with the structure of verb phrases in English and Spanish, and with syntactic processes involving VP and Vo. A primary focus of attention is auxiliary verbs. It is argued that the structure dominating these verbs is essentially the same in English and Spanish, as is the structure dominating auxiliaries and 'main' verbs in each language. It must be concluded that the occurrence of distinct syntactic processes affecting auxiliaries and other VP constituents in the two languages does not follow from parametrization of phrase structure. It is argued that similarities between the two languages with respect to the composition of so-called "V*" constructions derive from the fact that VP is licensed under both clauses of the Principle of Full Interpretation, i. e. , predication and sub categorization. Distinct syntactic processes in English and Spanish are argued to follow from the fact that there are inflectional features related to each of these licensing conditions (including specification for [ ± PAST) and nominal person/number features) which affect government relations in distinct ways, resulting in parametrization of S-structure representa tions. xi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to express my appreCiatIOn to the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Washington for support for preparation of the final manuscript, and to the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese at the University of Virginia for a leave during which much of this research was accomplished.
