Book The Vikings on Film

Download or read book The Vikings on Film written by Kevin J. Harty and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factual and fanciful tales of the Nordic warriors known as Vikings have proven irresistible to filmmakers for nearly a century. Diverse, prominent actors from Kirk Douglas, Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier to Tim Robbins and John Cleese, and noted directors, including Richard Fleischer, Clive Donner and Terry Jones, have all lent their talents to Viking-related films. These fourteen essays on films dealing with the Viking era discuss American, British and European productions. Analyzed in detail are such films as The Vikings (1958), The Long Ships (1964), Alfred the Great (1969), Erik the Viking (1989) and Outlander (2008), as well as two comic-strip adaptations, the 1954 and 1989 films of Prince Valiant and the animated Asterix and the Vikings (2006). A comprehensive filmography is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo Unbound traces the journey that brought us from Galileo's law of free fall to today's geneticists measuring evolutionary drift, entangled quantum particles moving among many worlds, and our lives as trajectories traversing a health space with thousands of dimensions. Remarkably, common themes persist that predict the evolution of species as readily as the orbits of planets or the collapse of stars into black holes. This book tells the history of spaces of expanding dimension and increasing abstraction and how they continue today to give new insight into the physics of complex systems. Galileo published the first modern law of motion, the Law of Fall, that was ideal and simple, laying the foundation upon which Newton built the first theory of dynamics. Early in the twentieth century, geometry became the cause of motion rather than the result when Einstein envisioned the fabric of space-time warped by mass and energy, forcing light rays to bend past the Sun. Possibly more radical was Feynman's dilemma of quantum particles taking all paths at once — setting the stage for the modern fields of quantum field theory and quantum computing. Yet as concepts of motion have evolved, one thing has remained constant, the need to track ever more complex changes and to capture their essence, to find patterns in the chaos as we try to predict and control our world.

Download or read book Vikings in the South written by Ann Christys and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ninth century, Vikings carried out raids on the Christian north and Muslim south of the Iberian peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal), going on to attack North Africa, southern Francia and Italy and perhaps sailing as far as Byzantium. A century later, Vikings killed a bishop of Santiago de Compostela and harried the coasts of al-Andalus. Most of the raids after this date were small in scale, but several heroes of the Old Norse sagas were said to have raided in the peninsula. These Vikings have been only a footnote to the history of the Viking Age. Many stories about their activities survive only in elaborate versions written centuries after the event, and in Arabic. This book reconsiders the Arabic material as part of a dossier that also includes Latin chronicles and charters as well as archaeological and place-name evidence. Arabic authors and their Latin contemporaries remembered Vikings in Iberia in surprisingly similar ways. How they did so sheds light on contemporary responses to Vikings throughout the medieval world.

Download or read book The Vikings written by Niel Oliver and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vikings famously took no prisoners, relished cruel retribution, and prided themselves on their bloodthirsty skills as warriors. But their prowess in battle is only a small part of their story, which stretches from their Scandinavian origins to America in the west and as far as Baghdad in the east. As the Vikings did not write their own history, we have to discover it for ourselves, and that discovery, as Neil Oliver reveals, tells an extraordinary story of a people who, from the brink of destruction, reached a quarter of the way around the globe and built an empire that lasted nearly two hundred years. Drawing on the latest discoveries that have only recently come to light, Scottish archaeologist Neil Oliver goes on the trail of the real Vikings. Where did they emerge from? How did they really live? And just what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery over 1,000 years ago? The Vikings explores many of those questions for the first time in an epic story of one of the world's great empires of conquest.

Book Orion s Highway Across The Galaxy

Download or read book Orion s Highway Across The Galaxy written by Charles E. Anzalone and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, titled Orion’s Highway Across the Galaxy, is about an alien from a distant planet assigned to help mankind by making specific individuals in the past become famous. His name is Enoch and he is a distant cousin of the human race. Gifted with certain skills, he is able to help Nostradamus, Mozart, and Dr. Christiaan Barnard gain the recognition that they richly deserved. The following is a quote from Enoch as he summarizes his life: Nostradamus, Mozart, and Dr. Barnard — all these men with different personalities were the ones that I helped in the corresponding years 1513, 1756, and 1962. Mozart lived for only thirty-five years because of the drugs he received as a baby causing his brain to deform. For every bad thing, there is a good thing: his contribution was the brilliance of his music that he left for society. When I recall the three Earthlings that I guided toward recognition, I concede that their beginnings were apt to be shadowy. So it is with great men trying to find their beginnings with their inner skills that are undeveloped. Most critics, then and now, still debate the success of their accomplishments with doubt and jealousy, and yet, wishing that they could achieve fame themselves. The plain and inescapable truth is that these men struggled with a desire that motivated them, and in the absence of eyewitnesses, no one was there to see me rally them on. I gave them inspiration and the ability to meet their goals. — Enoch, II With a life span of twelve hundred years, Enoch is capable of accomplishing many goals set forth by his superiors. The only goal that he cannot successfully complete is to make a decision to marry Beena, the red-haired beauty whom he loves, or to marry Brianna, the beautiful blond that had his child out of wedlock. During Enoch’s multiple visits to planet Earth, he discovers the mysteries of the universe. The following is one of Enoch’s discoveries: Traveling at Warp 5, we crossed the barrier that separates the two spiral sectors in our galaxy, called the Milky Way. Beyond the stream of neutrinos on the other side of the barrier, I could see the multicolored beacons that our radar illuminated on the monitor screen. The green rings and yellow dots in a circular pattern outlined the entrance to Orion’s Highway, a pathway that led to planet Earth. My assignment was to help an individual on Earth to become historically famous — an individual whose artistic music skills would calm the soul and quench the fires of war within the hearts of men! The individual was my distant cousin, and I was about to become my Brother’s Keeper. — Enoch, II The story line unravels universal mysteries about the feasibility of space flight at warp speeds, a decoding of the Bible that shows when the Great Flood occurred, and the purpose

It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the averagetime interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication ofthe abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 17 contains literature published in 1976 and received before August 15, 1976; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vikings Reimagined explores the changing perception of Norse and Viking cultures across different cultural forms, and the complex legacy of the Vikings in the present day. Bringing together experts in literature, history and heritage engagement, this highly interdisciplinary collection aims to reconsider the impact of the discipline of Old Norse Viking Studies outside the academy and to broaden our understanding of the ways in which the material and textual remains of the Viking Age are given new meanings in the present. The diverse collection draws attention to the many roles that the Vikings play across contemporary culture: from the importance of Viking tourism, to the role of Norse sub-cultures in the formation of local and international identities. Together these collected essays challenge the academy to rethink its engagement with popular reiterations of the Vikings and to reassess the position afforded to ‘reception’ within the discipline.
