Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Hymns (New Edition,): Alphabetically Arranged, for the Use of Sunday-Schools, Social Gatherings for Worship, and for Family and Private Devotion This selection of hymns has been prepared especially for the Sunday-schools under the care of the compiler. It is not published for general circulation, or with an intention that it should be offered for sale to compete with the numerous Sunday-school singing books now in the market. In his own experience the compiler has long felt the want of a book which, while it did not entirely reject the new and lighter hymns which have been so abundantly launched upon the Sunday-schools of America within the last few years, should yet furnish a good selection of the standard hymns of the Church which Christians have known, loved, and sung for generations, and even for centuries. He is not alone in the opinion that the children in our Sunday schools would be greatly profited by committing. to memory many of our stronger hymns. These would remain with them in after years, and be sources of joy and consolation, which can hardly be expected of much of the extremely light kind of verse now in common use. Book Hymns for Social and Private Worship

Download or read book Hymns for Social and Private Worship written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns for Social and Private Worship: Altered to a Devotional Form This small collection of hymns is compiled on a principle somewhat different from any now in use. It was thought that the singing of hymns, being an act of devotion, should, like prayer, be a direct address to the Supreme Being; and that when exercised by a social circle, should be offered in plural language, to signify their joint cooperation. From inattention to these principles, many of the hymns in our best collections, cannot be sung in concert, by many persons of devotional feelings, without a strong sense of impropriety. On this principle the following hymns have been selected; and such alterations have been made as to give them this character. The collection, it is hoped, will be found adapted to social and family worship; and the hymns are reduced to a small number, to make a cheap and portable volume. • Pages : 810 pages

Download or read book Punishment written by Mark Tunick and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 1915 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What actions should be punished? Should plea-bargaining be allowed? How should sentencing be determined? In this original, penetrating study, Mark Tunick explores not only why society punishes wrongdoing, but also how it implements punishment. Contending that the theory and practice of punishment are inherently linked, Tunick draws on a broad range of thinkers, from the radical criticisms of Nietzsche, Foucault, and some Marxist theorists through the sociological theories of Durkheim and Girard to various philosophical traditions and the "law and economics" movement. He defends punishment against its radical critics and offers a version of retribution, distinct from revenge, that holds that we punish not to deter or reform, but to mete out just deserts, vindicate right, and express society's righteous anger. Demonstrating first how this theory best accounts for how punishment is carried out, he then provides "immanent criticism" of certain features of our practice that don't accord with the retributive principle. Thought-provoking and deftly argued, Punishment will garner attention and spark debate among political theorists, philosophers, legal scholars, sociologists, and criminologists. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1992. What actions should be punished? Should plea-bargaining be allowed? How should sentencing be determined? In this original, penetrating study, Mark Tunick explores not only why society punishes wrongdoing, but also how it implements punishment.
