WE have thus endeavoured to trace the history of the Hindu religion from the commencement up to the present time--through a period amounting to more than three thousand years. It may be well to give a brief summary of the conclusions to which we have been led. The foundation of the Hindu faith is laid in the Veda, otherwise called the four Vedas. But from the facts which the Veda supplies we are able to draw some inferences regarding an earlier form of religion which we may designate pre-Vedic. It thus cannot be doubted that the Indo-European race, before it parted into five or six separate branches, recognized the existence of a Supreme Divinity--a Being powerful, wise, and good. He was held to be the arranger (we cannot say, the creator) and the ruler of all things. Offerings were a very important part in the worship of this Being; and, among these, animal sacrifice held a high place. We can hardly suppose that the Supreme Divinity was the only Being to whom worship was paid; yet we may well hesitate before we call the religion polytheistic.1 Idolatrous it almost certainly was not; if images were used at all, it could only have been very sparingly. The Supreme Divinity was in all probability a spiritual Being, but localized in heaven; and we may believe that, with many, Heaven and the God of heaven were conceptions separable, but in fact not always separated. Worship was, to a very large extent, domestic. We have little or no evidence of the existence of a priestly order. It is evident that the Hindus and Iranians (old Persians) remained together for a considerable time after the other divisions of the race had migrated towards the West. Reverence for the fermented juice of the Soma plant (in Zend Homo) is...

Book excerpt: Jesus Christ in truth a Hindu deity from the Vedas? Transfiguration of history, you say! Fact, I say! You already hold the proof in your hands with this book. In this book, you will find 41 verses from the oldest spiritual writing - the Indian Rigveda - in a newly translated and commented version. Contained in all these verses unnoticed for millennia - the holy name of God from the Bible. יהוה What Christ and Krishna have in common and what makes them different, you will also learn in this compact compendium in a comparison of the Bhagavad Gita - the so-called Hindu Bible - and the teachings of Jesus from the New Testament. The British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with the Gita under his arm believes he is close to enlightenment and the German Labor Minister Hubertus Heil is fishing for skilled workers in India with a new migration agreement as the ace up his sleeve. Meanwhile Oppenheimer in the cinema is notorious for quoting from the Indian scriptures and offering explosive fuel for a scandal on the subcontinent. As you can see, these are truly moving times in Europe and around the world. This book is an attempt at cultural rapprochement and reconciliation. Between us Europeans, the former colonialists and the former colonies. "न चक्षुः न दृष्टं न चक्षुः श्रुतं हस्तं न स्पृष्टं न मनुष्यः कल्पितं तत् ते दास्यामि।" - יֵשׁוּעַ

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Hinduism Compared The people of the West make little or no discrimina tion between the various communities inhabiting the vast empire of India. All the different religions now found among millions of Hindus go by the name of Hinduism. But in the words of a competent authority, Happily, India, though it has at least twenty distinct languages, has but one sacred and learned language (sanskrit) and one literature (vedic) accepted and revered by all adherents of Hinduism alike, however. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exceptional work is a study of the interreligious views of Raja Rammohun Roy - the 19th century's premier Hindu reformer, theologian, and polemicist – whose many initiatives heralded a rebirth of Hindu identity, both in India and abroad. The momentum of Roy's initiatives continued thereafter in all of India's efforts in religious, social and political transformation. His works and ideas awakened a self-awareness to discover the past, making it relevant to the present and visualizing a promising future. Herein is discussed Roy's meeting with both Islam and Christianity, an encounter that sharpened the Hindu mind to come to terms with these two vigorous Abrahamic faiths - one of which held a long and checkered history in India and the other, the faith of colonial domination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John P. Jones' "India's Problem, Krishna or Christ" is an interesting look at the multiculturalism of India during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At a time when English colonialism aimed to impart Christianity on the people of India, Hinduism faced the threat of disappearing. When many Indians might have felt torn between which faith to follow, Jones describes such a conflict that is important to read for a better understanding of this tense time in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth that offers a new way of understanding one of the world's oldest major religions, The Hindus elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account: many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated even within a century; its central tenets karma, dharma, to name just two arise at particular moments in Indian history and differ in each era, between genders, and caste to caste; and what is shared among Hindus is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the things that are unique to one group or another. Yet the greatness of Hinduism - its vitality, its earthiness, its vividness - lies precisely in many of those idiosyncratic qualities that continue to inspire debate today. Wendy Doniger is one of the foremost scholars of Hinduism in the world. With her inimitable insight and expertise Doniger illuminates those moments within the tradition that resist forces that would standardize or establish a canon. Without reversing or misrepresenting the historical hierarchies, she reveals how Sanskrit and vernacular sources are rich in knowledge of and compassion toward women and lower castes; how they debate tensions surrounding religion, violence, and tolerance; and how animals are the key to important shifts in attitudes toward different social classes. The Hindus brings a fascinating multiplicity of actors and stories to the stage to show how brilliant and creative thinkers - many of them far removed from Brahmin authors of Sanskrit texts - have kept Hinduism alive in ways that other scholars have not fully explored. In this unique and authoritative account, debates about Hindu traditions become platforms from which to consider the ironies, and overlooked epiphanies, of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Hinduism: A Lecture Addressed to Educated Hindus; In Four Parts I recognise also in Hinduism a higher ele ment, an element which I cannot but regard as divine, struggling with what is earthly and evil in it, or what is merely human, and though frequently foiled or overborne, never entirely destroyed. I trace the operation of this divine element in the religiousness - the habit of seeing God in all things and all things in God - which has formed so marked a characteristic of the people of India in every period of their history.
