Book Documents Relating to the Program of the First Hague Peace Conference Classic Reprint

Download or read book Documents Relating to the Program of the First Hague Peace Conference Classic Reprint written by Daehne Van Varick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents Relating to the Program of the First Hague Peace Conference An English translation of the volume is contained in the present pamphlet issued by the Division of International Law of the Carnegie Endowment for Inter national Peace, in pursuance of the policy of the Trustees to disseminate informa tion of this nature and of the specific direction of the Executive Committee in regard to the above-mentioned documents. The first part of the volume relates to the subject of the limitation of armaments, and has heretofore been issued by the Division in English translation as No. 22 of this Pamphlet Series, the supply of which has been exhausted. The footnotes of the original have been enlarged by adding biographical and bibliographical data. It will be observed that the rush-bagot Agreement between Great Britain and the United States for the limitation of armament upon the Great Lakes of North America was not included among the documents submitted by the Nether land Government to the Hague Peace Conference. As the present publication consists solely of the documents laid before the Conference, it was not deemed advisable to insert it in the text. Inasmuch, however, as one of the documents included in the collection refers to the Agreement, it is, for the sake of complete ness, added in the form of an appendix. The reader interested in the Agreement will find it most conveniently perhaps in the second of the present series of pamphlets, entitled Limitation of Armament on the Great Lakes, being 'the report made under date of December 7, 1892, by the Honorable John W. Foster, Secretary of State, to the President of the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An indispensable resource on the Treaty of Versailles, one of the most influential and controversial documents in history, this book explains how the treaty tried to solve the complex issues that emerged from the destruction of World War I. This carefully curated primary source collection includes roughly 60 documents related to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. By collecting all of the most significant documents in one volume, it allows readers to hear the original arguments surrounding the treaty and to explore the voices of the people involved at the Paris Peace Conference. Moreover, it allows readers to engage with the documents so as to better understand the complex motivations and issues coming out of World War I and highlights the differences between the victors and identifies the problems many countries had with the treaty before it was even signed. The documents are organized in chronological order, providing a blueprint to help students to understand all of the significant events that led to the treaty, as well as the vast repercussions of the treaty itself. In addition to the Treaty of Versailles itself, documents include such significant primary sources as the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the Balfour Declaration, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points, and Germany's response to the treaty.

Book The Peace That Almost Was

Download or read book The Peace That Almost Was written by Mark Tooley and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A narrative history of the 1861 Washington Peace Conference, the bipartisan, last-ditch effort to prevent the Civil War, an effort that nearly averted the carnage that followed. In February 1861, most of AmericaÆs great statesmenùincluding a former president, dozens of current and former senators, Supreme Court justices, governors, and congressmenùcame together at the historic Willard Hotel in a desperate attempt to stave off Civil War. Seven southern states had already seceded, and the conferees battled against time to craft a compromise to protect slavery and thus preserve the union and prevent war. Participants included former President John Tyler, General William ShermanÆs Catholic step-father, General Winfield Scott, and LincolnÆs future Treasury Secretary, Salmon Chaseùand from a room upstairs at the hotel, Lincoln himself. Revelatory and definitive, The Peace That Almost Was demonstrates that slavery was the main issue of the conferenceùand thus of the war itselfùand that no matter the shared faith, family, and friendships of the participants, ultimately no compromise could be reached.
