Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is accepted to regard fossil coals as a result of transformation of former peatbogs accumulated autoctonously in swampy conditions what is not true. In the book, the notion about allochtonous phytomass accumulation at formation of overwhelming majority of seam-like coal deposits is substantiated. An alternative version of the theory of rhythmical sedimentation of coal-bearing series, where leading role belongs not to wavelike movements of the sedimentation area, but to pulsing lifting of wash-out areas, is suggested. The edition is of interest for specialists in coal geology, lithology, facies, geotectonics, and also for broad circle of persons interested in secrets of nature. Key words: coal seams, initial material, allochtonous accumulation, coal-bearing formations, rhythmic build, granulometric composition, undulating movements, wash-out areas, pulsing lifting.

Book How Coal Is Formed

Download or read book How Coal Is Formed written by Blair Belton and published by Gareth Stevens Publishing LLLP. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal is a natural resource millions of years in the making. Since over 40 percent of the world’s electricity comes from burning coal, it remains an important, though sometimes controversial, energy source. The processes that transform organic remains into coal, coal mines, and the carbon cycle are important topics covered in this valuable volume. Readers will learn about the pollution attributed to the burning of coal as well as about coal alternatives. Graphic organizers, instructive photographs, and thoughtful sidebars help present a well-balanced look at this relevant and timely subject.

Book After Coal

Download or read book After Coal written by Tom Hansell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when fossil fuels run out? How do communities and cultures survive? Central Appalachia and south Wales were built to extract coal, and faced with coal's decline, both regions have experienced economic depression, labor unrest, and out-migration. After Coal focuses on coalfield residents who chose not to leave, but instead remained in their communities and worked to build a diverse and sustainable economy. It tells the story of four decades of exchange between two mining communities on opposite sides of the Atlantic, and profiles individuals and organizations that are undertaking the critical work of regeneration. The stories in this book are told through interviews and photographs collected during the making of After Coal, a documentary film produced by the Center for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University and directed by Tom Hansell. Considering resonances between Appalachia and Wales in the realms of labor, environment, and movements for social justice, the book approaches the transition from coal as an opportunity for marginalized people around the world to work toward safer and more egalitarian futures.

  • Author : Shellen Xiao Wu
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

Download or read book Empires of Coal written by Shellen Xiao Wu and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1868–1872, German geologist Ferdinand von Richthofen went on an expedition to China. His reports on what he found there would transform Western interest in China from the land of porcelain and tea to a repository of immense coal reserves. By the 1890s, European and American powers and the Qing state and local elites battled for control over the rights to these valuable mineral deposits. As coal went from a useful commodity to the essential fuel of industrialization, this vast natural resource would prove integral to the struggle for political control of China. Geology served both as the handmaiden to European imperialism and the rallying point of Chinese resistance to Western encroachment. In the late nineteenth century both foreign powers and the Chinese viewed control over mineral resources as the key to modernization and industrialization. When the first China Geological Survey began work in the 1910s, conceptions of natural resources had already shifted, and the Qing state expanded its control over mining rights, setting the precedent for the subsequent Republican and People's Republic of China regimes. In Empires of Coal, Shellen Xiao Wu argues that the changes specific to the late Qing were part of global trends in the nineteenth century, when the rise of science and industrialization destabilized global systems and caused widespread unrest and the toppling of ruling regimes around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 1880s, Seattle became a major coal port in the United States. By 1908, Puget Sound was the third-largest coal port, after New York and Baltimore. For Seattle, the major coal mines were in Issaquah, New Castle, Renton, and Black Diamond, with many other smaller mines throughout King County. Until the petroleum revolution, Seattle exported most of its coal to San Francisco. Because of coal, Seattle became a center for skilled engineers, machinists, and miners for the maritime, manufacturing, mining, and railroad industries, differentiating itself from other lumber towns on Puget Sound. Seattle's Coal Legacy is the story of a frontier town going through an industrial revolution in its own time. The skills and knowledge developed during the coal era--engineering, finance, transportation, manufacturing, etc.--made Seattle the major city it is today."-- Provided by publisher.

Book Effects of Past Global Change on Life

Download or read book Effects of Past Global Change on Life written by Panel on Effects of Past Global Change on Life and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we expect as global change progresses? Will there be thresholds that trigger sudden shifts in environmental conditions--or that cause catastrophic destruction of life? Effects of Past Global Change on Life explores what earth scientists are learning about the impact of large-scale environmental changes on ancient life--and how these findings may help us resolve today's environmental controversies. Leading authorities discuss historical climate trends and what can be learned from the mass extinctions and other critical periods about the rise and fall of plant and animal species in response to global change. The volume develops a picture of how environmental change has closed some evolutionary doors while opening others--including profound effects on the early members of the human family. An expert panel offers specific recommendations on expanding research and improving investigative tools--and targets historical periods and geological and biological patterns with the most promise of shedding light on future developments. This readable and informative book will be of special interest to professionals in the earth sciences and the environmental community as well as concerned policymakers.
