Download or read book Origin and Character of the British People Classic Reprint written by Nottidge Charles MacNamara and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and Character of the British People It being generally admitted that the natives of the South and West of Ireland, as also those of the greater part of Wales, differ as regards their character both from Englishmen and Scotchmen, an attempt will be made in the following pages to explain the existence of this difference, and to trace to their source these hereditary characteristics. The qualities of individuals influence to a large extent their actions, which form collectively the history of the country in which they live. The better, therefore, we understand the character and inclination of individuals the more fully shall we comprehend the social and moral life which predominates in the country to which they belong. Book The Graphic History of the British Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Graphic History of the British Empire Classic Reprint written by W. F. Collier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graphic History of the British Empire This library History of the British Empire is based on Dr. W. F. Collier's larger History of England. All the best features of the original work have been retained. At the same time, the narrative has been brought into harmony with the results of recent historical research, and has been continued to the' Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Its title - the graphic history - is justified not only by its picturesque style, but also by its contents and its plan. It is arranged, not according to dynasties and reigns, but according to the prominent features of each age, including rep resentative men as well as memorable events. It is a series of pictures showing, on a broad canvas and without too many details, the great movements - political, social, educational, and religious - which embody essentially the history of the British Islands and the British people. Special chapters treat of the social life and the constitutional features of each period while others are biographical, and others are literary. Images of the Virgin were stripped of their costly vestments and sent to be publicly burnt at London. Latimer forwarded to the capital the figure of Our Lady, which he had thrust out of his cathedral church at Worcester, with rough words of scorn: She with her old sister of Walsingham, her younger sister of Ipswich, and their two other sisters of Doncaster and Penrice, would make a jolly muster at Smithfield. Fresh orders were given to fling all relics from their reliquaries, and to level every shrine With the ground. The bones of St. Thomas of Canterbury were torn from the stately shrine. Book The Origin of the English Nation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin of the English Nation Classic Reprint written by Hector Munro Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the English Nation Of the English nation, so far as the information at our disposal permits. The author ventures to hope that in spite of its many shortcomings it may serve to call attention to a field Of investigation which, though rich in promise, has been greatly neglected, especially in this country. In general he has sought to make use of all branches of ethnological study - history, tradition, language, custom, religion and antiquities. Owing however to the backwardness Of archaeological research through out the north Of Europe, except in Denmark and Sweden, it has not been found possible to treat the last of these subjects in a manner at all commensurate with its true importance. When this branch of study has been developed it will perhaps be possible to Obtain more light on the affinities of the English nation in times anterior to those to which the earliest heroic traditions refer. At present, it need hardly be said, we have little definite evidence available for that early period, and any investigation that is made must necessarily partake more or less of a hypothetical character. Download or read book A Short History of the English People Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by John Richard Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English People, Vol. 3 But it was his elder brother, John Wesley, who embodied in himself not this or that side of the new movement, but the movement itself. Even at Oxford, where he resided as a fel low Oi Lincoln, he had been looked upon as head of the group of Methodists, and after his return from a quixotic mission to the Indians of Georgia he again took the lead of the little society, which had removed in the interval to London. In power as a preacher he stood next to Whitefield; as a hymn writer he stood second to his brother Charles. But while com bining in some degree the excellence of either, he possessed qualities in which both were utterly deficient; an indefatigable industry, a cool judgment, a command over others, a faculty of organization, a singular union Of patience and moderation with an imperious ambition, which marked him as a ruler Of men. He had besides a learning and skill in writing which no other of the Methodists possessed; he was older than any Of his colleagues at the start of the movement, and he out lived them all. His life indeed almost covers the century, and the Methodist body had passed through every phase of its history before he sank into the grave at the age Of eighty eight. It would have been impossible for Wesley to have wielded the power he did had he not shared the follies and extravagance as well as the enthusiasm of his disciples. Throughout his life his asceticism was that of a monk. At times he lived on bread only, and he Often slept on the bare boards. He lived in a world of wonders and divine interpositions. It was a miracle if the rain stopped and allowed him to set for ward on a journey. It was a judgment of Heaven if a hail storm burst over a town which had been deaf to his preach ing. One day, he tells us, when he was tired and his horse fell lame, I thought - cannot God heal either man or beast by any means or without any? - immediately my headache ceased and my horse's lameness in the same instant. With a still more childish fanaticism he guided his conduct, whether in ordinary events or in the great crises of his life, by draw ing lots or watching the particular texts at which his Bible Opened. But with all this extravagance and superstition, Wesley's mind was essentially practical, orderly, and conserv' ative.
