Book Orientation Handbook for Youth Exchange Programs

Download or read book Orientation Handbook for Youth Exchange Programs written by Cornelius Lee Grove and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the large corps of professionals and volunteers who work in the growing number of organizations and programs involved in international educational exchange, this book provides two important resources: (1) a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of the youth exchange experience and the factors that come into play when providing the participants with effective orientation; and (2) a set of carefully selected materials that may be applied to the orientation of each of the principal groups involved (the participants, their natural families, and their host families) at each stage of the exchange process (predeparture, during sojourn, and post-return). The 26 resources found in this handbook are drawn from a series of orientation handbooks that have been compiled and published by the American Field Service (AFS) International/Intercultural Programs between 1981 and 1987, and represent the best ideas and orientation exercises generated by that organization. An annotated bibliography concludes the document. It is divided into five sections: (1) trainers' materials (10 items), (2) sojourners' and hosts' materials (6 items), (3) focused background readings (21 items), (4) general background readings (35 items), and (5) other bibliographies (7 items). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities throughout the world plan library orientations for first years or specific audiences such as transfer or international students. These events can vary greatly in shape and form depending on the size, resources and staff of the institution, orientation schedule, and whether it is mandatory for students. Some institutions plan day-long events, elaborate games, or scavenger hunts; some offer drop in sessions or library tours; others offer an online orientation. Planning Academic Library Orientations gathers case studies from around the world covering a wide variety of approaches as a guide to those revamping or creating new library orientations. Chapters are organized into the following thematic sections: Games; Marketing & Promotion; Partnerships; Targeting Specific Audiences; Technology; and Tours, and are cross-referenced if they touch on additional themes. Each chapter includes institutional information so readers can decide which type of orientation is appropriate for their own institution and see what resources are required.
