This marriage between two titans of the East gave rise to one of the most iconic names in international luxury. Assouline's Mandarin Oriental celebrates its brilliant legacy with a slipcase edition that shares the group's rich history with archival photographs from the original hotels and sumptuous details of the most recent additions to the collection, making it a must for any fan of travel and luxury. Today, each hotel has a unique fan, which reflects the individuality of the property and the culture of its location, from Guangzhou and New York's original fans designed by acclaimed fashion designer Vivienne Tam to Taipei and Geneva's 19th-century antiques. Mandarin Oriental's Fans, including Grammy Award-winning opera singer Cecilia Bartoli, Academy Award¬-winning actor Kevin Spacey, renowned architect I.M. Pei, heads of state, and world travelers cherish the impeccable service, innovative and refined cuisine, elegant design, opulent spas, and welcoming smiles that greet them each time they visit. Book excerpt: Many people are surprised to learn that the city of Amarillo was actually founded twice. Originally settled by J. T. Berry in April 1887 and known as Oneida, the site of the town was located on such low ground that many residents feared it was susceptible to flooding. In 1888, one concerned resident named Henry B. Sanborn began buying land a mile east of the site as a potential place to relocate the town. In 1889, the town's fears came to fruition when heavy rains flooded the original town site, prompting residents to move to Sanborn's new location. The town went on to become one of the world's busiest cattle shipping points in the late 1890s, causing its population to grow significantly. Today Amarillo is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle, and its economy continues to thrive on cattle, along with agriculture, oil, and natural gas.

Book Shepheard s of Cairo

Download or read book Shepheard s of Cairo written by Tarek Ibrahim and published by Dr Ludwig Reichert. This book was released on 2019 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few buildings reflect the waxing and waning of European influence in Egypt during the 19th and 20th centuries as profoundly as Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo. Prior to its total destruction during the infamous "Black Saturday" riots of January 1952, the building was a potent symbol of the problematic relationship between native and foreigner, Orient and Occident, colonized and colonizer. Initially the site of Napoleon's headquarters during his ill-fated Egyptian campaign, over the following 150 years, successive expansions and reconstructions transformed the humble lodge into one of the most glamorous and legendary hotels in the world. Hardly a single important political, social or artistic figure that passed through Cairo failed to stay and make an appearance at the hotel. Until recently, a scholarly analysis and documentation on the architecture of Shepheard's Hotel has been cursory at best due the near total absence of primary visual material. Thanks to a spectacular discovery at Grunsberg Castle near Nuremberg, Germany, primary visual material of the building - including original floor plans, correspondence, sketches and photographs - has come to light. The design of the hotel can now be correctly attributed to the previously unknown German architect Johann Adam Rennebaum (1858-1937) who lived and worked in Egypt for more than 50 years. This cache, combined with material from numerous archives in Egypt, Europe and North America, allows for the first comprehensive survey on the art, architecture and design of the legendary lost hotel. More than merely lodging, Shepheard's made design a destination and allowed visitors to step through the looking glass into a fantastic recreation of the wonders along the banks of the Nile, quickly becoming an essential part of the grand tour in Egypt for well-heeled travelers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
