Book Orient and Orientalisms in US American Poetry and Poetics

Download or read book Orient and Orientalisms in US American Poetry and Poetics written by Sabine Sielke and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the poetics and politics of US-American poetry's diverse and distinct investments in the imaginary space of 'the Orient'. Reading American poets - from Emily Dickinson to Frank Bidart, from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Kimiko Hahn - the contributions show how tropes of the Orient have fabricated screens onto which we project matters by no means foreign, but very close to home. As we accompany American poets on their journeys East, we are bound to arrive in - culturally specific - territories of the West. Traversing cultural crossroads and rediscovering places as 'exotic' as Banyan ashrams and Bostonian living rooms, these expeditions shed new light on crucial moments of American literary and cultural history. And, on the way, they reassess what Edward Said, thirty years ago, conceived of as Orientalism, and how far this concept has travelled in the meantime.

Book The Ethics and Poetics of Alterity in Asian American Poetry

Download or read book The Ethics and Poetics of Alterity in Asian American Poetry written by Xiaojing Zhou and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry by Asian American writers has had a significant impact on the landscape of contemporary American poetry, and a book-length critical treatment of Asian American poetry is long overdue. In this groundbreaking book, Xiaojing Zhou demonstrates how many Asian American poets transform the conventional “I” of lyric poetry—based on the traditional Western concept of the self and the Cartesian “I”—to enact a more ethical relationship between the “I” and its others. Drawing on Emmanuel Levinas’s idea of the ethics of alterity—which argues that an ethical relation to the other is one that acknowledges the irreducibility of otherness—Zhou offers a reconceptualization of both self and other. Taking difference as a source of creativity and turning it into a form of resistance and a critical intervention, Asian American poets engage with broader issues than the merely poetic. They confront social injustice against the other and call critical attention to a concept of otherness which differs fundamentally from that underlying racism, sexism, and colonialism. By locating the ethical and political questions of otherness in language, discourse, aesthetics, and everyday encounters, Asian American poets help advance critical studies in race, gender, and popular culture as well as in poetry. The Ethics and Poetics of Alterity is not limited, however, to literary studies: it is an invaluable response to the questions raised by increasingly globalized encounters across many kinds of boundaries. The Poets Marilyn Chin, Kimiko Hahn, Myung Mi Kim, Li Young Lee, Timothy Liu, David Mura, and John Yau

Download or read book America and the Orient written by Heike Schäfer and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2006 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of 9/11, fearful images of the Orient as a volatile blend of religious extremism and anti-western politics have flourished in the United States and Europe. Yet Orient and Occident are interrelated cultural formations. This interdisciplinary volume explores the rich history of cultural and political exchange between Arab, South Asian, and American cultures from the 18th century to the present. Nineteen original essays, which were first presented at the 51st conference of the German Association for American Studies, address the emergence of Arab American literature, intercultural encounters in the works of Arab, Arab American, and South Asian American writers and artists, and the Orient as a geographical region as well as a foil for American self-definitions in U.S. literature, opera, and film. Revisiting the work of Edward Said and Samuel Huntington, the collection examines how we develop our knowledge and fantasies about the Orient.

Book Orientalism Modernism and the American Poem

Download or read book Orientalism Modernism and the American Poem written by Robert Kern and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-26 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orientalism, Modernism, and the American Poem is a critical and historical interpretation of "Oriental" influences on American modernist poetry. Kern equates Fenollosa and Pound's "discovery" of Chinese writing with the American pursuit of a natural language for poetry; what Emerson had termed the "language of nature". This language of nature is here shown to be a mythic conception continuous with the Renaissance idea of the language of Adam - a language in which things themselves are also signs. Analyzing and contextualizing the nineteenth-century works of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Ernest Fenollosa and the twentieth-century creations of Ezra Pound and Gary Snyder, Kern sheds light on the three contemporary nexuses of his search: the cultural study of Orientalism and the West, the evolution of Indo-European linguistic theory, and the intellectual tradition of American modernist poetry.

Book Oriental Prospects

Download or read book Oriental Prospects written by C. C. Barfoot and published by Brill. This book was released on 1998 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of stimulating and valuable discussion (as well as some indignation and hot air) has been stimulated by Edward Said, whose provocative study of Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient appeared twenty years ago. This present book will, we believe, be recognized as a worthy addition to the many attempts that have since been made to sift the intrinsic and ingrained attitudes of West to East. The fifteen articles in Oriental Prospects: Western Literature and the Lure of the East cover literature from the Renaissance through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the modern period, some in pragmatic accounts of responses to and uses of experiences of the Orient and its cultural attitudes and artefacts, others contending more theoretically with issues that Edward Said has raised. Despite all the misunderstanding, prejudice and propaganda in the scholarly and literary depiction of the Orient still today as in the past, what emerges from this wide-range of articles is that no species of literary text or academic study can appear without risking the accusation of escapist exoticism or cultural and economic exploitation; and thus regrettably masking the essential and vital significance of the political and the real and imaginative trading between East and West.
