Book Organic Sulfur Compounds

Download or read book Organic Sulfur Compounds written by N. Kharasch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Sulfur Compounds, Volume I deals with the chemistry of organic sulfur compounds such as disulfides, polysulfides, olefins, acetylenes, and chloroethylenes. Topics covered range from the inorganic acids of sulfur and the thermodynamics of organic sulfur compounds to some applications of isotopic sulfur and the stereochemistry of disulfides and polysulfides. Comprised of 40 chapters, this volume first considers the precise structures of elemental sulfur in relation to the reactions of sulfur compounds, followed by an analysis of the inorganic acids of sulfur. The reader is then introduced to the thermodynamics of organic sulfur compounds and the bonding characteristics of the sulfur atom, as well as the infrared spectra of organosulfur compounds. Subsequent chapters focus on the ionic scission of the sulfur-sulfur bond; nucleophilic reactions of thiols with acetylene and chloroethylene; reactions of sulfur with olefins; and the chemistry of isothiocyanates. This book should prove useful to advanced students, practitioners, and research workers in the field of organic chemistry.

Download or read book Organosulfur Chemistry written by Gordon Harlow Whitham and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently there is no concise teaching text aimed at 2/3rd year undergraduates on organosulfur chemsitry. Organosulfur chemistry is widely taught at this level. After a brief introductory chapter the main part of the book deals with the preparation and chemical properties of the principaltypes of organosulfur compounds classified under the headings: Divalent sulfur compounds, Tricoordinate sulfur compounds, and Tetracoordinate sulfur compounds. In choosing examples to illustrate the text, the guiding principle has been that the illustrations should provide insight into and anunderstanding of the characteristic features of organosulfur chemistry. Two concluding chapters deal, on the one hand, with applications of organosulfur compounds in organic synthesis and, on the other, with a brief summary of organoselenium chemistry, highlighting the similarities and differenceswith respect to organosulfur chemistry.

Excerpt: Organosulfur compounds are organic compounds that contain sulfur. They are often associated with foul odors, but many of the sweetest compounds known are organosulfur derivatives, e.g., saccharin. Nature abounds with organosulfur compounds-sulfur is essential for life. Two of the 20 common amino acids are organosulfur compounds, and the antibiotics penicillin (pictured below) and sulfa drugs both contain sulfur. While sulfur-containing antibiotics save many lives, sulfur mustard is a deadly chemical warfare agent. Fossil fuels, coal, petroleum, and natural gas, which are derived from ancient organisms, necessarily contain organosulfur compounds, the removal of which is a major focus of oil refineries. Sulfur shares the chalcogen group with oxygen, selenium and tellurium, and it is expected that organosulfur compounds have similarities with carbon-oxygen, carbon-selenium and carbon-tellurium compounds, which is true to some extent. A classical chemical test for the detection of sulfur compounds is the Carius halogen method. Organosulfur compounds can be classified according to the sulfur-containing functional...

Book The Structure Dependent Energy of Organic Compounds

Download or read book The Structure Dependent Energy of Organic Compounds written by Árpád Furka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief introduces readers to an alternative thermochemical reference system that makes it possible to use the heats of formation of organic compounds to deduce the energies that depend entirely on their structures, and which provides calculated values for most of the characteristic structures appearing in organic molecules. These structure-dependent energies are provided e.g. for selected compounds of normal and cyclic alkanes, open chain and cyclic olefins (including conjugated polyenes), alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons and their substituted derivatives. The oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen derivatives of the above-mentioned compounds are also represented with calculated structure-dependent energies including alcohols, ethers, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids, thiols, sulfides, amines, amides, heterocyclic compounds and others. Most organic reactions can be interpreted as the disappearance of certain structures and formation of others. If the structure-dependent energies are known, it can be shown how the disappearing and the newly formed structures contribute to the heat of reactions and to the driving forces. As experienced by the author, who pioneered the concept, structure dependent energies can help teachers to make organic chemistry more accessible for their students. Accordingly, the brief offers a valuable resource for all those who teach organic chemistry at universities, and for those who are learning it.

Book Natural Sulfur Compounds

Download or read book Natural Sulfur Compounds written by Doriano Cavallini and published by Springer. This book was released on 1980-05 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third International Meeting on "Low Molecular Weight Sulfur Containing Natural Products,"sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, was held in the historical building of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Rome, Italy, June 18-21, 1979. The symposium was held in order to exchange knowledge in the intriguing and complex field of sulfur biochemistry. This theme brought together scientists from many speciali zed areas from organic and physical chemistry to biology and medicine. The interdisciplinary nature of the meeting gave to the participants the opportunity to discuss pro blems of common interest approached from different scienti fic standpoints. This volume contains 47 contributions presented at the meeting which mainly deal with new structural and metabolic aspects of sulfur biochemistry. An important aspect of such a scientific meeting is the rapid publication of the proceedings. Through the cooperation of the authors in providing "camera ready" copies of their manuscripts, the good efforts of the Orga nizing Committee, and the Plenum Press Publishing Co., it has been possible to publish this book within a few months of the meeting.
