This book is composed of nine chapters that specifically cover both immobilized and naturally occurring systems. The first two chapters examine the nature and function of enzyme organization in the mitochondrion, as well as the structural/functional coupling of the components in energy-transducing membrane systems. These topics are followed by discussions on ""dynamic compartmentation"" in soluble multienzyme systems; the allosteric enzyme systems; and allosterism in reversibly adsorptive enzyme systems. Other chapters explore model studies with specific immobilized multienzyme sequences, as regards the analysis of microenvironmental effects, and the mathematical exposition on the kinetic analysis of multienzyme systems in homogeneous solution. The last chapters present some theoretical and experimental studies on the behavior of immobilized systems. These chapters also provide a speculative integrative view of the kind of functional coherence that may be operative in organized states in vivo. Other papers explain the functional relationships of guanosine triphosphate binding proteins, the glycogen storage disease, the regulation of the pentose phosphate pathway in the brain, as well as the regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis. One paper discusses the dissociable enzyme complexes stabilized by weak interactions, particularly on the interaction of cytosolic enzymes with the contractile apparatus, with membranes, or with functionally related enzymes. Another paper investigates the mechanism of acute regulation, in mammary epithelial cells, of the processes which collaborate to supply fatty acids for esterification to form glycerolipids (which is predominantly triacylglycerol). Glycerolipids comprise mostly the total lipid content of the secretory product of those cells—mammalian milk. The paper notes that a counter-regulatory hormone collaborating with insulin in the regulation of lipid metabolism in the lactating mammary cell, does not act via cyclic AMP. The collection can prove beneficial for biochemists, micro-biologists, bio-physicists, cellular researchers, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology or physiology.

Book excerpt: The living organisms and systems possess extraordinary properties of programmed development, differentiation, growth, response, movement, duplication of key molecules and in m any cases higher mental functions. But the organisms are physical objects so they must follow laws of physics yet they do not seem to obey them. Physicists cannot easily persuade themselves to accept this as finally true. Non-living objects are governed by these laws of physics and they can explain these properties. However, in the living systems too phenomena encountered like coupled non-linear interactions, manybody effects, cooperativity, coherence, phase transitions, reversible metastable states are being understood better with the aid of powerful theoretical and experimental techniques and hope is raised that these may let us understand the mysteriousness of life. Contributors to this volume are a small fraction of rapidly growing scientific opinion that these aspects of living bodies are to be expected in a hitherto inadequately suspected state of matter which is in the main directed by these physical properties pushed almost to limit. This state of matter, the living matter, deserves to be called The Living State. Mishra proposes that given hydrogenic orbitals, atoms showing easy hybridisability and multiple valances, molecules with low-lying electronic levels, "loosestructure", and a metabolic pump in thermodynamically open system, various fundamental properties of living state can emerge automatically. Structurally these are all known to be present.

Baum's Wizard of Oz presented opportunities for growth, and herein lies the purpose of this volume: in providing updated statements concerning the nature of the organism from both scientific and metaphysical perspectives, we might ponder the philo sophical basis of our research in the hope of gaining insight into our endeavor, not to mention the possibility of its enrichment; it is this contem plative view of our research which offers a unique dimension to this anthology. Oxygen levels are not stable in aquatic environments and exclusively water-breathing ?sh must still cope with the ever-changing levels of O 2 and with large temperature changes. This is re?ected in their sophisticated count- current systems, with high O extraction and internal and external O receptors. 2 2 The conquest for the terrestrial environment took place in the late Devonian period (355–359 million years ago), and recent discoveries portray the gradual transitional evolution of land vertebrates. The oxygen-rich and relatively stable atmospheric conditionsimpliedthatoxygen-sensingmechanismswererelativelysimpleandl- gain compared with acid–base regulation. Recently, physiology has expanded into related ?elds such as biochemistry, molecular biology, morphology and anatomy. In the light of the work in these ?elds, the introduction of DNA-based cladograms, which can be used to evaluate the likelihood of land vertebrates and lung?sh as a sister group, could explain why their cardio-respiratory control systems are similar. The diffusing capacity of a duck lung is 40 times higher than that of a toad or lung?sh. Certainly, some animals have evolved to rich high-performance levels.

Book excerpt: On three occasions and at different locations, conferences were held to honor the eightieth birthday of Professor Herbert Frohlich: on the 18th December, 1985, in Liverpool, England; on the 14th February, 1986, in Stuttgart, Germany; and on the 8th March, 1986, on the Palm Coast, Florida. This Festschrift is a compilation of the papers of those conferences. Frohlich's choice of problems, from the earliest days, was couched in the phy sics of intrinsically interacting systems of excitation. One example, in which he set the course of research which is still followed, concerned dielectric breakdown, developed from the 1930's over several decades. The interacting systems are the electrons (receiving energy from an electric field) and lattice atom motion (taking energy from the electrons via "electron-phonon" interaction, hence heat dissipa tion). There is a threshold field above which the latter cannot keep up with the former, and the combined system (electrons plus phonons) "runs away"; that is to say, collectively it switches to a new state.
