Book excerpt: This empirical study addresses the question of how foreign market unfamiliarity of entrant firms develops post-entry. Three different predictions of post-entry change of foreign market unfamiliarity are derived from the literature on firms' internationalization process. The predictions are made subject to empirical examination using a set of primary data of current (i.e. at the point in time of mail interviews) foreign operation business operations reported by managers of Danish international firms. The empirical study gives insight to the incidence and character of the so-called 'shock effect' in relation to foreign market entry: the phenomenon of entrant firms' inclination to underestimate differences between the home and host country in terms of the business environment. The data support the supposition that entrant firms in general are exposed to a 'shock effect'. On average, the foreign market unfamiliarity as perceived by the entrant firms peaks seven years after entry. The company data indicate that entrant firms in general experience the shock effect in relation to entry of adjacent, rather than distant, countries. Hence, the 'psychic distance paradox' hypothesis is supported. Also, the data suggest that the shock effect befalls producers of customized products, but not producers of standardized products, and furthermore, entrant firms in general experience the shock effect in relation to acquisition of tacit rather than explicit knowledge. Many firms, however, have attained substantial growth in foreign markets even though they have had little prior direct experience in those markets. Based crucially on the knowledge-based view and the organizational learning theory, the present study conceptualizes international firms' learning and develops propositions that may explain both the effects of direct learning of cultures and economies in other countries and the effects of indirect learning from the experience of other firms on the success of international market expansion. The current study proposed that experiential knowledge with respect to culture and economy positively moderates the effects of those drivers on the success of firms' international market expansion. In addition, the importance of indirect learning is highlighted in explaining the international growth of firms. Finally, this manuscript is concluded with a discussion of important implications for theory and practice by emphasizing the roles of experiential knowledge and indirect learning from competitors and interfirm relationships and with the limitations of the present study and the directions of future research.

Building on these two literature streams a conceptual model is developed and tested on a set of primary data of Danish firms and their foreign market operations. The empirical study suggests that factors considered essential in traditional internationalization process theory, such as experiential learning, explains only a very limited part of perceived knowledge gaps. When factors pertaining to the concepts of absorptive capacity and superstitious learning are added, the explanatory power improves significantly. Apparently, our understanding of firms' internationalization processes can be enriched by insights from organizational learning literature.

I deliberately joined the ranks of academia at a fairly late stage as a natural progression from my professional career as an executive in what in those days was known as "decision support". My career had begun in the telecom industry before the days of deregulation in what one would call strategic planning and then I moved on to decision support in the field of banking, developing trading room software and risk management systems. As I developed decision support systems for real applications, the more I realized how very dependent these systems are on decision design. I began to question a number of basic business assumptions. I felt increasingly the need to review the way decision support systems were conceived at the time since they not only limited what one could do with computers, but also limited the decision-making capacity of executives. I thus decided to take time out from my professional obligations in order to be able to investigate the 'whys and wherefores' behind decision-making. I experienced yet another disappointment at the beginning of my academic career as I noted the academic research style prevailing in most Business Schools. The academic community was adhering to a type of research methodology based on a single view of the way humans think.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Multinational Firms' Sequential Entry Strategies Submitted by Gerald Yong Gao for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in May, 2006 With multinational firms' increasing commitments to the global market in the last several decades, research on foreign market entry and investment has attracted much attention in the field of international marketing/business. A large volume of conceptual and empirical work has examined the determinants of entry mode choices, the timing of entries, and the performance implication of entry timing and mode choices. Most of previous studies only focused on firms' one-time entry. Evidently, multinational firms often engage in a series of entries over time in key foreign markets. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the emerging research stream of sequential entry activities and provide more insights on the dynamic process of multinational firms' market entry behaviors. This thesis focuses on sequential entry strategies of multinational firms. It consists of three studies each addressing a subtopic. In the first study, I examine sequential entry mode choices of multinational firms. Previous studies suggest that firms tend to adopt the same entry mode that they have used before. Meanwhile, some studies also propose that firms tend to switch entry modes over time. Taking the organizational learning perspective, I examine the influences of firms' learning from their own entry experience, competitors' entry experience, and their own international experience. I found that firms have the tendency of adopting the same mode used previously, but they will also switch to a higher commitment mode when they have accumulated more entry experience. The IIfindings provide new insights on the evolution of firms' entry mode choices in a foreign market. In the second study, I examine the pacing of multinational firms' sequential entry activities in foreign markets, i.e., how fast firms undertake a series of entries over time. I propose that the pacing of sequential entries is influenced by firms' learning in foreign markets and market attractiveness. Furthermore, I examine the process of multinational firms' within-market expansion and investigate how firms' learning enables them to conquer the constraints of expansion. The empirical results provide supportive evidence for the predictions. In the third study, I examine the effect of organizational learning on multinational firms' subsidiary performance. I develop different profiles of experience at firm level including general entry experience, entry specific experience, and exporting experience, and examine whether experience accumulation contributes to subsidiary performance. Furthermore, I also investigate the performance implication of learning at subsidiary level of multinational firms. I found that firms' general entry experience has no effect on the financial performance of subsidiaries. On the contrary, entry specific experience, exporting experience, and subsidiary experience exhibit positive effects on subsidiary performance. The empirical results also provide supporting evidence that the effect of exporting experience will get weaker as firms accumulate more entry specific experience. II
