Book Organizational Economics Research in the U S Agricultural Sector and the Contracting and Organizations Research Institute

Download or read book Organizational Economics Research in the U S Agricultural Sector and the Contracting and Organizations Research Institute written by Michael E. Sykuta and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational and contract economics have achieved an increasingly important role in analyses of the food, agribusiness, and agricultural sectors. In particular, formal theoretical models of contract design and firm integration have begun to appear in the leading agricultural economics journals. Although the introduction of organizational economic theory has allowed scholars to begin addressing the changing nature of the food, agribusiness, and agricultural sectors, empirical research in these sectors is less well developed. What empirical research does exist tends to focus on specific contracts or transactions in isolation of the surrounding economic and institutional environments, or to be based on limited samples of unique contract types. Despite recent advances, much work remains. We believe this future work will be characterized by three features: a continued accumulation of empirical studies of contract design and organizational structure, an increasing focus on the interdependencies between organizational and contract structures linking the overall value chain, and an increasing integration of theories from a variety of social science disciplines. This suggests a need for an accessible collection of contracts as data for these studies, a more holistic theory of economic sectors as systems rather than series of discrete blocks, and a forum for interdisciplinary interaction whereby the cross-fertilization of ideas across disciplines might occur more rapidly. In this paper, we argue the importance and value of these features to advance both theory and empirical research, and illustrate how they are being addressed and incorporated in current research programs at the Contracting and Organizations Research Institute.

Book New Ideas in Contracting and Organizational Economics Research

Download or read book New Ideas in Contracting and Organizational Economics Research written by Harvey S. James and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on contracting and organisational economics is progressing at a rapid pace. Nevertheless, what new ideas are needed in order to advance the frontiers of contracting and organisations research in ways that prove beneficial to society? This new book brings together scholars from around the world who have new ideas on the economics of contracts and organisations, otherwise known as transaction cost economics. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section presents ideas for improving the theoretical and empirical research in transaction cost economics. The second section shows how transaction cost economics informs on two important business issues -- corporate contracting and information technology (IT) operations. The third section presents alternative frameworks for examining contracting, organisational, and regulatory problems.

Book Empirical Studies in Institutional Change

Download or read book Empirical Studies in Institutional Change written by Lee J. Alston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical Studies in Institutional Change is a collection of nine empirical studies by fourteen scholars. Dealing with issues ranging from the evolution of secure markets in seventeenth-century England to the origins of property rights in airport slots in modern America, the contributors analyse institutions and institutional change in various parts of the world and at various periods of time. The volume is a contribution to the new economics of institutions, which emphasises the role of transaction costs and property rights in shaping incentives and results in the economic arena. To make the papers accessible to a wide audience, including students of economics and other social sciences, the editors have written an introduction to each study and added three theoretical essays to the volume, including Douglass North's Nobel Prize address, which reflect their collective views as to the present status of institutional analysis and where it is headed.

It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.

Book Contract Economics

Download or read book Contract Economics written by Lars Werin and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contract economics has become increasingly important in understanding and modelling economic organization. However, research within this emerging and very active field has followed various routes, different problems and aspects have been emphasized and methods vary considerably. There is a need, therefore, to take stock of the research carried out so far, and to ascertain how the various strands relate to one another. Contract Economics includes contributions from many of the leading academics and researchers in the field. These contributions are drawn together by the editors to form a coherent volume that covers the theory of implicit and explicit contracts and the application of this theory in labor economics, industrial organization, international trade, and financial intermediation.
