Book Alternative Organizational Plans

Download or read book Alternative Organizational Plans written by Deborah V. Jolly and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis aims to provide policymakers with a comprehensive overview of issues surrounding the reorganization of small rural school districts. The report draws on research findings and describes examples of various organizational arrangements to address rural education needs. Seven sections examine the following: (1) current social and economic conditions in rural communities and common challenges, including the high percentage of at-risk rural students, leading to renewed interest in district reorganization; (2) research addressing relationships between school size and school effectiveness, curricular offerings, dropout rates, student achievement (especially that of disadvantaged and at-risk students), and financial efficiency; (3) background and history of rural school consolidation; (4) positive and negative effects of school consolidation on schools and communities; (5) arrangements between districts and other organizations that provide alternatives to total school reorganization; (6) information about distance education technology as it relates to district reorganization; and (7) conclusions. The research shows not only that larger schools do not guarantee improved quality or efficiency, but also that small schools are positively associated with achievement and many factors that promote it. Partial reorganization alternatives involve cooperative efforts between districts or between districts and other organizations, thus increasing the size of the population served or of the resource base without the negative effects of total mergers. Distance education provides a means to expand curriculum and facilitate district cooperation. Contains 142 references.

Book Middle Level Education in Small Rural Schools

Download or read book Middle Level Education in Small Rural Schools written by Martin Tadlock and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a guidebook for middle level educators as they seek to institute educational experiences appropriate to the adolescents in their programs, this book discusses the issues and assets of middle school education in rural settings. Chapter 1 of the book is an introduction, discussing the concept of middle school as applied to small rural school settings. This chapter also discusses the advantages and challenges that small rural schools have over larger schools in achieving the middle school concept. Chapter 2 deals with middle school components in small rural schools, with emphasis on the comparison of small rural schools and non-rural schools. Chapter 3 describes a study carried out to ascertain organizational structure, issues, and proposed solutions for implementing middle level programs in small rural schools. Chapter 4 discusses how rural schools can pursue the solutions described in the previous chapter, which include professional development, curriculum and instruction, interdisciplinary teams, common planning time, block schedules, and advisory programs. Chapter 5 presents two case studies of small rural schools involved in the middle school movement. Chapter 6 summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of small rural schools in meeting adolescent student needs and emphasizes the need for courage to risk failure as the foundation for educational change. Survey instruments from the study described in chapter 3 are appended. (MOK)

Book Rural People and Communities in the 21st Century

Download or read book Rural People and Communities in the 21st Century written by David L. Brown and published by Polity. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural people and communities continue to play important social, economic and environmental roles at a time in which societies are rapidly urbanizing, and the identities of local places are increasingly subsumed by flows of people, information and economic activity across global spaces. However, while the organization of rural life has been fundamentally transformed by institutional and social changes that have occurred since the mid-twentieth century, rural people and communities have proved resilient in the face of these transformations. This book examines the causes and consequences of major social and economic changes affecting rural communities and populations during the first decades of the twenty-first century, and explores policies developed to ameliorate problems or enhance opportunities. Primarily focused on the U.S. context, while also providing international comparative discussion, the book is organized into five sections each of which explores both socio-demographic and political economic aspects of rural transformation. It features an accessible and up-to-date blend of theory and empirical analysis, with each chapter's discussion grounded in real-life situations through the use of empirical case-study materials. Rural People and Communities in the 21st Century is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in rural sociology, community sociology, rural and/or population geography, community development, and population studies.

Book The Changing American Countryside

Download or read book The Changing American Countryside written by Emery N. Castle and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on rural America, to the extent that it exists, has largely been written by urban-based scholars perpetuating out-of-date notions and stereotypes or by those who see little difference between rural and agricultural concerns. As a result, the real rural America remains much misunderstood, neglected, or ignored by scholars and policymakers alike. In response, Emery Castle offers The Changing American Countryside, a volume that will forever change how we look at this important subject. Castle brings together the writings of eminent scholars from several disciplines and varying backgrounds to take a fresh and comprehensive look at the "forgotten hinterlands." These authors examine the role of non-metropolitan people and places in the economic life of our nation and cover such diverse issues as poverty, industry, the environment, education, family, social problems, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, government, public policy, and regional diversity The authors are especially effective in demonstrating why rural America is so much more than just agriculture. It is in fact highly diverse, complex, and interdependent with urban America and the international market place. Most major rural problems, they contend, simply cannot be effectively addressed in isolation from their urban and international connections. To do so is misguided and even hazardous, when one-fourth of our population and ninety-seven per cent of our land area is rural. Together these writings not only provide a new and more realistic view of rural life and public policy, but also suggest how the field of rural studies can greatly enrich our understanding of national life.

Book Rural Education History

Download or read book Rural Education History written by Casey Thomas Jakubowski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using case studies and an auto-ethnographic study of rural education history in New York State, Casey Thomas Jakubowski provides an introduction to recent events in state-level educational policy implementation. Rural Education History: State Policy Meets Local Implementation argues that rural communities are subjected to urbanormative policy, especially in their schools, and provides voice to an understudied phenomena in an under researched region. The chapters combine sociology, policy, and rich case studies to demonstrate the realities, and nearby history, in rural America.
