Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 72, Curtin University of Technology (Curtin Business School), course: Human Resource Management 200, language: English, abstract: To achieve its objectives a company needs a business strategy. It can choose between innovative prospector, quality enhancer or cost-defender strategy. According to that the firm has to apply an appropriate employment strategy. This can be the economic or the relational approach. The economic approach relies on hard skills whereas the relational approach focuses on behavioural skills. Depending on the employment strategy different ways of training and development come to mind for workers and managers. This report will explain the mentioned business strategies as well as the resulting employment strategies. Furthermore, means for training and development for non-managerial employees and for managers are explained. This report aims at giving recommendations for the automobile industry. Therefore, the successful automotive companies BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, Chrysler and Toyota are examined according to their training and development opportunities. Further, it will be proven that the automobile industry applies the innovative prospector strategy and has the possibilities to invest heavily in human resources. This report shows that beside traditional training and development measures, corporate universities and e-learning support the innovative prospector strategy. The size of automobile companies enables them to invest in these costly measures. In the end, they will be critically evaluated and finally recommended.

Book Automotive Production Systems and Standardisation

Download or read book Automotive Production Systems and Standardisation written by Constanze Clarke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2000, Mercedes-Benz started to implement the Mercedes-Benz Prod- tion System (MPS) throughout its world-wide passenger car plants. This event is exemplary of a trend within the automotive industry: the creation and introduction of company-specific standardised production systems. It gradually emerged with the introduction of the Chrysler Operating System (COS) in the mid-1990s and represents a distinct step in the process towards implementing the universal pr- ciples of lean thinking as propagated by the MIT-study. For the academic field of industrial sociology and labour policy, the emergence of this trend seems to mark a new stage in the evolution of the debate about production systems in the auto- tive industry (Jürgens 2002:2), particularly as it seems to undermine the stand of the critics of the one-best way model (Boyer and Freyssenet 1995). The introduction of company-level standardised production systems marks the starting point of the present study. At the core of it is a case study about the M- cedes Benz Production System (MPS).

Book Knowledge Transfer in the Automobile Industry

Download or read book Knowledge Transfer in the Automobile Industry written by Dessy Irawati and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book arose from a multi-disciplinary study which looked at the development of global-local manufacturing clusters in the context of a developing, Asian economy. The study demonstrates the connection amongst theoretical perspectives such as international business, development studies, economic geography, and organisational learning clusters/production networks through an in-depth case study of the Indonesian automotive cluster. The book gives a detailed account of two automotive clusters (Toyota and Honda) and their contribution to regional economic development in emerging economies in Asian region. The book builds on existing literature to develop a theoretical framework to shed light on the study's empirical findings. The book discusses practical implications for both the business community and policy makers. The discussion on global-local networks in an Asian context supplements existing literature and case studies in the field. This is one of the few books that explicitly links regional clusters to global networks. The book offers a refreshingly international (Asian) perspective to the literature on clusters and economic geography for emerging economies.

Book Learning Factories

Download or read book Learning Factories written by Halvor Holtskog and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the norms, culture, and practices of the socio-economic Nordic model give them a competitive edge in globalized production chains. Using the Norwegian automotive industry – one of the most globalized industries in the world – as the empirical foundation of the book, it examines the strengths, tensions, and challenges the Norwegian work organization style meets in this particular business environment. It explores the current indicators of competitiveness, innovation, scientific excellence, and well-being as compared with the US, UK, EU, Japan, and elsewhere to address the hotly debated question of how institutions and culture contribute to or inhibit certain forms of work organization, learning, and economic performance. Integrating action research, organization studies, and learning and innovation economics, this book provides a more precise understanding of how institutions and cultures at a macro level shape learning practices in a competitive industry.
