Book The Interface Structure and Electrochemical Processes at the Boundary Between Two Immiscible Liquids

Download or read book The Interface Structure and Electrochemical Processes at the Boundary Between Two Immiscible Liquids written by Vladimir E. Kazarinov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on the electrochemical processes at the interface between two immiscible liquids began a long time ago: they date back to the end of the last century. Such celebrated scientists as Nemst and Haber, and also young A. N. Frumkin were among those who originated this science. Later A. N. Frumkin went a long way in furthering the studies at the Institute of Electrochemistry. The theory of the appearance of potential in a system of two immiscible electrolytes was developed and experimentally verified before the beginning of the thirties. In later years the studies in this area considerably lagged behind those conducted at metal electrodes which were widely used in different industries. In the past 15 years, however, the situation has radically changed and we have witnessed a drastic increase in the number of publications on the electrochemistry of immiscible electrolytes. We are glad to note that the investiga tions show not only a quantitative but also a qualitative change. The theoretical works on the oil/water interface test not only the thermodynamic aspects of the inter face but also recreate the molecular picture of the process. Along with the now con ventional oilfwater system, electrochemical studies are made on various membranes, including the frnest bilayer lipid membranes, and also on microemulsion systems. A prominent place in the investigation of the oil/water interface is occupied by photoprocesses that come into play at the interface between two ionic conductors.

Book Environmental Tuning of the Reactivity of Molecules Confined to Polarized Interfaces

Download or read book Environmental Tuning of the Reactivity of Molecules Confined to Polarized Interfaces written by Corey Jarin Kaminsky and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heterogenization of molecular catalysts to polarized interfaces provides an appealing approach to the design of more efficient and selective electrochemical devices. The well-defined nature of molecular catalysts renders them amenable to synthetic tuning to unravel structure-function relationships. From these studies, key insight to optimization of their activity is obtained. However, recent work has established that outer-sphere effects such as the surface structure and ligation method can impact reactivity as much as catalyst structure. This thesis explores these environmental contributions to reactivity with a particular focus on exploring the impact of electronic coupling between a molecular site and the band structure of graphitic carbon electrodes or using this coupling as a tool to understand the reactivity of molecules confined to solid-liquid interfaces. Chapters two through four explore environmental contributions to porphyrin electrocatalysis. We report on how the magnitude of electronic coupling conferred by the linkage tunes the rate of oxygen reduction catalysis. We further demonstrate solvent-dependent concerted proton electron transfer for a cobalt porphyrin attached to graphitic carbon by an alkyl-tether. Building on these results, we present a mechanistic basis for the stark differences in the selectivity and activity of heterogenized and soluble cobalt porphyrins for the CO2 reduction reaction. Chapters five and six address charge effects at solid-liquid interfaces. In chapter five, we analyze the rate of dissociative ligand exchange for identical heterogeneous and soluble binding sites and find a modest rate enhancement that we attribute to the enhanced charge stabilization by the solid support. Chapter six details our attempt to use ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to experimentally test our previously established model for catalysts strongly electronically coupled to the band states of graphitic carbon by direct measurement of the interfacial electrostatic potential drop.

Book Volume 1 Modern Electrochemistry

Download or read book Volume 1 Modern Electrochemistry written by John O'M. Bockris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its nucleus in some lectures given by one ofus (J. O'M. B. ) in a course on electrochemistry to students of energy conversion at the Vniversity of Pennsylvania. It was there that he met a number of people trained in chemistry, physics, biology, metallurgy, and materials science, all ofwhom wanted to know something about electrochemistry. The concept of writing a book about electrochemistry wh ich could be understood by people with very varied backgrounds was thereby engendered. The lectures were recorded and written up by Dr. Klaus Muller as a 293-page manuscript. At a later stage, A. K. N. R. joined the effort; it was decided to make a fresh start and to write a much more comprehensive text. Of methods for direct energy conversion, the electrochemical one is the most advanced and seems the most likely to become of considerable practical importanee. Thus, conversion to electrochemically powered trans portation systems appears to be an important step by means of which the difficulties of air pollution and the effeets of an increasing concentration in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide may be met. Corrosion is recognized as having an electroehemical basis. The synthesis of nylon now contains an important electroehemical stage. Some central biological mechanisms have been shown to take place by means of electrochemical reactions. A number of Ameriean organizations have recently recommended greatly increased activity in training and research in electrochemistry at universities in the Vnited States.

It also highlights several applications in electrocatalysis and electrochemistry. Atomic-Scale Modelling of Electrochemical Systems discusses different ways of including the electrode potential in the computational setup and fixed potential calculations within the framework of grand canonical density functional theory. It examines classical and quantum mechanical models for the solid-liquid interface and formation of an electrochemical double-layer using molecular dynamics and/or continuum descriptions. A thermodynamic description of the interface and reactions taking place at the interface as a function of the electrode potential is provided, as are novel ways to describe rates of heterogeneous electron transfer, proton-coupled electron transfer, and other electrocatalytic reactions. The book also covers multiscale modelling, where atomic level information is used for predicting experimental observables to enable direct comparison with experiments, to rationalize experimental results, and to predict the following electrochemical performance. Uniquely explains how to understand, predict, and optimize the properties and reactivity of electrochemical interfaces starting from the atomic scale Uses an engaging “tutorial style” presentation, highlighting a solid physicochemical background, computational implementation, and applications for different methods, including merits and limitations Bridges the gap between experimental electrochemistry and computational atomistic modelling Written by a team of experts within the field of computational electrochemistry and the wider computational condensed matter community, this book serves as an introduction to the subject for readers entering the field of atom-level electrochemical modeling, while also serving as an invaluable reference for advanced practitioners already working in the field.

Book Structure and Charge Processes at Metal Membrane Interface

Download or read book Structure and Charge Processes at Metal Membrane Interface written by Ana M. Gomez-M. and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modified electrodes are a very active area of electrochemistry, with multiple and widespread uses. They are a central component in many electrochemical devices, in which usually a thin membrane covers the electrode, as in Proton Exchange Fuel cells. Thus, understanding the structure and molecular processes at electrode/membrane interfaces constitutes an important issue for an efficient development of these devices. In this work, Nafion(r) coated Pt(111) electrodes were studied and experimental results were explained in light of two different theoretical approaches. Initially, the structure and dynamics of the electrode/SPE interface was described in terms of the acid/base equilibrium and the different mobility of membrane ionic groups. The model extends the conceptual framework for the interpretation of CVs for these systems and the general theory for electrified interfaces. Additionally, it provides a tool towards the understanding of the electrocatalytic activity on modified electrode
