Book excerpt: This research focuses primarily on unwrapping the philosophy of pedagogy of architectural education in fine art and design institutions. Architecture plays an important role in society fictionally, culturally, socially, economically, and politically. Analyses of and criticality about architectural education is necessary in terms of challenging existing building, and contemplating building innovations for a sustainable future. Investigating teaching models at the college level in two different design and fine art institutions, one in the United States and the other in China offers in-depth exploration of teaching purposes and techniques. The methodologies of this research include literature research, autographic research at one of the education sites, class and critique observations in the other school, and interviews with educators and students from both institutions. This thesis explores three major questions: What are the particular philosophies behind the architecture curricula at these institutions of higher education? What are the major critical issues in the evaluation of the students' work and progression through the curriculum? What are educators' and students' thoughts on teaching and learning experiences in these art and design institutions? This study recognizes that the model of architectural education varies from each school, program, studio, and educator. Firstly, educators have different philosophies for teaching in the studios because of their educational background, experiences, interests and socio-political positions. The diversity of approaches to teaching and breadth of content of educators' ideas, while reflective of the current state of the field of architecture and design, can cause miscommunication and disconnection between studios and between faculty and students. Secondly, as the jury system is essential to the tradition of education architects as necessary to the staged evaluation of students' performance and maturation, this research finds that the review systems differ in these two institutions. The contrast between China's and the United States' critique systems calls to attention the need to look critically at differing assessment systems in art and design institutions as measurements of outcomes in architecture. This research does not aim to provide solutions or seek to advise how to improve the architectural education models, but rather, to have a better understanding of why content is a certain way and why specific curricula are essential to the teaching of the discipline of architecture in these two schools. More importantly, this research intends to raise awareness of the need for critical thinking by educators and students in both institutions as part of applying critical discourse to the teaching and learning of architecture.

Book excerpt: This project is born out of similar questions and discussions on the topic of organicism emergent from two critical strands regarding the discourse of organic self-generation: one dealing with the problem of stopping in the design processes in history, and the other with the organic legacy of style in the nineteenth century as a preeminent form of aesthetic ideology. The epistemologies of self-generation outlined by enlightenment and critical philosophy provided the model for the discursive formations of modern urban planning and architecture. The form of the organism was thought to calibrate modernism’s infinite extension. The architectural organicism of today does not take on the language of the biological sciences, as they did in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but rather the image of complex systems, be they computational/informational, geo/ecological, or even ontological/aesthetic ‘networks’. What is retained from the modernity of yesterday is the ideology of endless self-generation. Revisiting such a topic feels relevant now, in a time when the idea of endless generation is rendered more suspect than ever, amid an ever increasing speed and complexity of artificial intelligence (AI) networks. The essays collected in this book offer a variety of critiques of the modernist idea of endless growth in the fields of architecture, literature, philosophy, and the history of science. They range in scope from theoretical and speculative to analytic and critical and from studies of the history of modernity to reflections of our contemporary world. Far from advocating a return to the romantic forms of nineteenth-century naturphilosophie, this project focuses on probing organicism for new forms of critique and emergent subjectivities in a contemporary, 'post'-pandemic constellation of neo-naturalism in design, climate change, complex systems, and information networks. This book will be of interest to a broad range of researchers and professionals in architecture and art history, historians of science, visual artists, and scholars in the humanities more generally.
