Book excerpt: This volume is based on a very successful meeting on organ transplantation that was held in Kuwait in 1990 under the auspices of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation. An international group of organ transplant experts attended this conference and their contributions and deliberations have been recent1y updated to produce this definitive and authoritative summary of current clinic al practice in organ transplantation. The initial chapters appropriately focus on the immunology of organ trans plantation with special emphasis on the initial events in the induction of alloreactivity, the mechanisms of rejection, and the potential for tolerance induction. A strong emphasis is placed on the diagnosis of rejection by cellular analysis. The section on immunosuppression deals with several new areas of clinical therapy. The section on renal transplantation is unique in several respects, the long-term results from various countries, including the Middle East, are summarized, the use of living unrelated donors and of ABO incom patible donors - all strategies to maximize organ availability - are presented.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990, this study of the moral problems bound up with transplant therapy addresses a finely balanced distinction between ethical issues relating to its experimental nature on the one hand and those which arise when transplantation is routine on the other. Among the issues examined are proposals for routine cadaveric harvesting, criteria for organ and tissue procurement from living donors, foetuses, non-human animals and current ethical problems with artificial implants. Written as a contribution to practical philosophy, this book will interest ethicists and health care professionals.

Book Non Heart Beating Organ Transplantation

Download or read book Non Heart Beating Organ Transplantation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-01-18 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-heart-beating donors (individuals whose deaths are determined by cessation of heart and respiratory function rather than loss of whole brain function) could potentially be of major importance in reducing the gap between the demand for and available supply of organs for transplantation. Prompted by questions concerning the medical management of such donorsâ€"specifically, whether interventions undertaken to enhance the supply and quality of potentially transplantable organs (i.e. the use of anticoagulants and vasodilators) were in the best interests of the donor patientâ€"the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services asked the Institute of Medicine to examine from scientific and ethical points of view "alternative medical approaches that can be used to maximize the availability of organs from [a] donor [in an end-of-life situation] without violating prevailing ethical norms...." This book examines transplantation supply and demand, historical and modern conceptions of non-heart-beating donors, and organ procurement organizations and transplant program policies, and contains recommendations concerning the principles and ethical issues surrounding the topic.

Book Spare Parts

    Book Details:
  • Author : Renée Claire Fox
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 0195076508
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Spare Parts written by Renée Claire Fox and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developments that have occurred in the field of organ transplantation during the 1980s and early 1990s, and the simultaneous rise and fall of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart are the subject of this vividly written and absorbing new volume. In Spare Parts, fascinating, interconnected stories of organ transplantation and the artificial heart are recounted in an interpretive framework that explores the vision of the "replaceable body." Themes of uncertainty, gift exchange, and the allocation of scarce material and non-material resources underscore a discussion that openly examines the escalating ardor about the goodness of repairing and remaking people with transplanted organs. Likewise, the stories open questions of life and death, identity, and solidarity. This important book offers insights into the symbolic and anthropomorphic meanings associated with the human body and its organs, and into the ways that medical professionals come to terms with the concomitant aspects of transferring vital body parts. Both artificial and donor organs, as well as the process of transplantation, are the subject of a thoughtful discussion which touches on the medical myths and rituals that they generate. Chronologically, Spare Parts begins where the authors' previous book, The Courage to Fail, leaves off. More than a sequel, however, this work reflects their increasingly troubled and critical reactions to the expansion of organ replacement. Likely to be controversial, this book is must reading for bioethicists, medical sociologists and anthropologists, health-care lawyers, planners and administrators, nurses and physicians, medical journalists and science writers, and concerned lay readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the common principles of morality and ethics derived from divinely endowed intuitive reason through the creation of al-fitr' a (nature) and human intellect (al-‘aql). Biomedical topics are presented and ethical issues related to topics such as genetic testing, assisted reproduction and organ transplantation are discussed. Whereas these natural sources are God’s special gifts to human beings, God’s revelation as given to the prophets is the supernatural source of divine guidance through which human communities have been guided at all times through history. The second part of the book concentrates on the objectives of Islamic religious practice – the maqa' sid – which include: Preservation of Faith, Preservation of Life, Preservation of Mind (intellect and reason), Preservation of Progeny (al-nasl) and Preservation of Property. Lastly, the third part of the book discusses selected topical issues, including abortion, assisted reproduction devices, genetics, organ transplantation, brain death and end-of-life aspects. For each topic, the current medical evidence is followed by a detailed discussion of the ethical issues involved.
