Book excerpt: The Symposium on Organ and Species Specificity in Chemical Carcinogenesis was held March 1981 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. James Miller concluded this Symposium with these remarks: "Without a doubt all of us would agree this has been a very successful symposium in illustrating a very wide range of chemical, stereochemical, biochemical, metabolic, molecular, and biological factors in chemical carcinogenesis. I think it is noteworthy that many of the discussions have dealt with pharmacodynamic, or toxicodynamic, factors that can influence the biological activities of the extremely wide range of structures that we choose to call chemical carcinogens. I sincerely hope that after this symposium everyone here will realize the very great need we have for further information on these agents in the species we profess to be working for, the human species. We badly need an adequate data base on human organs, human tissues, human cells, human subcellular preparations, and human body fluids. I don't think we can rely on extrapolations of data on chemical carcinogenesis from experimental animals to humans, no matter how sophisticated or plausible these extrapolations may seem, until we know far more about chemical carcinogenesis in humans. Now, I'd like to add a somewhat personal note. As many of you know, my wife and I have shared a joint career of some 40 years in this field, and I'd like to emphasize in these closing remarks the factor of youth.

The University of Wisconsin continues to graduate a large number of Chinese students. Economic conditions in the 1930s were very precarious for the United States and other parts of the world. Many of us students grew closer together because we were living on similarly tight budgets. As a matter of fact, we subleased a part of our apartment in Madison to some Chinese graduate students. This was a very nice opportunity for us to learn about the scientific and cultural back ground of our Chinese friends. Many of them came from the interior of China and had had very little opportunity to become acquainted with people from a western culture. Living with these students was a very pleasant and educational experience which gave us a good pic ture of the cultural life and educational system of China at that time--an intimate picture that one normally would not see without travelling in that country.

Organized to promote interdisciplinary analyses, the Society approaches risks from three broad perspectives: (1) the impact of various risks on the health of the world's populations and on the environment; (2) the social and political implications of specifIc risks, and (3) the management and reduction of risks through the development of a risk analysis methodology and corresponding data bases. The scant literature available on the epidemiology of trophoblast neoplasms suggests that they are as much as ten times more common in Africa, Asia, India, and much of the developing world than in Western countries. The stimulus for the book evolved out of a common interest to combine Western technology with the clinical experience in the developing world in a common pursuit of the study and eradication of trophoblast neoplasia. There is substantial evidence to contend that gene derepression as seen in trophoblastic disease may be a universal prerequisite to neoplastic transformation in general. The recent discovery that the tumor markers, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or its subunits, are identifiable in over 90 percent of all extracted neoplasms suggests a critical role for this common denominator of gene derepression in neoplasia. This gene derepression concept in reproductive biology and neoplasia spans many of the basic parameters of human cell replication as related to endocrinology, immunology, biochemistry, electrophysiol ogy, genetics, and pharmacology. The International Society for the Study of Trophoblastic Disease focuses on the global aspects of trophoblast neoplasms. These global aspects include epidemiology and etiology of the disease, regional variations in treatment of trophoblastic neoplasms, and potential ways to adapt and apply Western technology to effective use in developing countries. It was this perspective that formed the basis for the First World Congress on Trophoblast Neoplasms, which convened in Nairobi in October, 1982.
