Book Survival Math

Download or read book Survival Math written by Mitchell Jackson and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A vibrant memoir of race, violence, family, and manhood…a virtuosic wail of a book” (The Boston Globe), Survival Math calculates how award-winning author Mitchell S. Jackson survived the Portland, Oregon, of his youth. This “spellbinding” (NPR) book explores gangs and guns, near-death experiences, sex work, masculinity, composite fathers, the concept of “hustle,” and the destructive power of addiction—all framed within the story of Mitchell Jackson, his family, and his community. Lauded for its breathtaking pace, its tender portrayals, its stark candor, and its luminous style, Survival Math reveals on every page the searching intellect and originality of its author. The primary narrative, focused on understanding the antecedents of Jackson’s family’s experience, is complemented by survivor files, which feature photographs and riveting short narratives of several of Jackson’s male relatives. “A vulnerable, sobering look at Jackson’s life and beyond, in all its tragedies, burdens, and faults” (San Francisco Chronicle), the sum of Survival Math’s parts is a highly original whole, one that reflects on the exigencies—over generations—that have shaped the lives of so many disenfranchised Americans. “Both poetic and brutally honest” (Salon), Mitchell S. Jackson’s nonfiction debut is as essential as it is beautiful, as real as it is artful, a singular achievement, not to be missed.

Download or read book Math Circle by the Bay written by Laura Givental and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on selected topics that the authors taught in math circles for elementary school students at the University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; Dominican University (Marin County, CA); and the University of Oregon (Eugene). It is intended for people who are already running a math circle or who are thinking about organizing one. It can be used by parents to help their motivated, math-loving kids or by elementary school teachers. We also hope that bright fourth or fifth graders will be able to read this book on their own. The main features of this book are the logical sequence of the problems, the description of class reactions, and the hints given to kids when they get stuck. This book tries to keep the balance between two goals: inspire readers to invent their own original approaches while being detailed enough to work as a fallback in case the teacher needs to prepare a lesson on short notice. It introduces kids to combinatorics, Fibonacci numbers, Pascal's triangle, and the notion of area, among other things. The authors chose topics with deep mathematical context. These topics are just as engaging and entertaining to children as typical “recreational math” problems, but they can be developed deeper and to more advanced levels. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.

Book excerpt: As a natural follow up to "Asked and Answered: Dialogues On Advocating For Students of Color in Mathematics", this book centers the personal narratives and contributions of mathematicians who deeply believe in the power of their advocacy work to bring positive change to the culture and climate of the mathematical community. Moreover, continuing the important theme of 5% actionable change, the book centers over 300 tangible practices and policies to advocate for students of color in mathematics, compiled from participants in our professional development programming which answers the question "What can I do to advocate for students of color?" After engaging with the book the reader will be equipped with numerous concrete suggestions for advocating for students of color, ways in which they can continue this work in spite of challenges that may arise, and most importantly, the reader will have the opportunity to reimagine what it means for them personally to be an advocate for students of color. Book The Role of Mathematics Discourse in Producing Leaders of Discourse

Download or read book The Role of Mathematics Discourse in Producing Leaders of Discourse written by Libby Knott and published by IAP. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this monograph is to showcase successful implementation of mathematical discourse in the classroom. Some questions that might be addressed are: * How does a teacher begin to learn about using discourse purposefully to improve mathematics teaching and learning? * How is discourse interwoven into professional development content courses to provide teachers with the tools necessary to begin using discourse in their own classrooms? * What does a discourse-rich classroom look like and how is it different from other classrooms, from both the teacher's and the students' perspectives? * How can teachers of pre-service teachers integrate discourse into their content and methods courses? * How can we use discourse research to inform work with teachers, both pre- and in-service, for example, to help them know how to respond to elicited knowledge from students in their classrooms? * What are the discourse challenges in on-line mathematics courses offered for professional development? Can on-line classrooms also be discourse-rich? What would that look like? * In what ways does mathematical discourse differ from discourse in general?

Book The Geometry of Special Relativity

Download or read book The Geometry of Special Relativity written by Tevian Dray and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geometry of Special Relativity provides an introduction to special relativity that encourages readers to see beyond the formulas to the deeper geometric structure. The text treats the geometry of hyperbolas as the key to understanding special relativity. This approach replaces the ubiquitous γ symbol of most standard treatments with the appropriate hyperbolic trigonometric functions. In most cases, this not only simplifies the appearance of the formulas, but also emphasizes their geometric content in such a way as to make them almost obvious. Furthermore, many important relations, including the famous relativistic addition formula for velocities, follow directly from the appropriate trigonometric addition formulas. The book first describes the basic physics of special relativity to set the stage for the geometric treatment that follows. It then reviews properties of ordinary two-dimensional Euclidean space, expressed in terms of the usual circular trigonometric functions, before presenting a similar treatment of two-dimensional Minkowski space, expressed in terms of hyperbolic trigonometric functions. After covering special relativity again from the geometric point of view, the text discusses standard paradoxes, applications to relativistic mechanics, the relativistic unification of electricity and magnetism, and further steps leading to Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The book also briefly describes the further steps leading to Einstein’s general theory of relativity and then explores applications of hyperbola geometry to non-Euclidean geometry and calculus, including a geometric construction of the derivatives of trigonometric functions and the exponential function.
