Book A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System Part 2

Download or read book A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System Part 2 written by T. Servais and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ordovician was one of the longest of the geological periods, characterized by major magmatic and tectonic activity, an immense biodiversification, swings in climate and sea levels, and the first Phanerozoic mass extinction. ‘A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System’ is presented in two volumes in The Geological Society, Special Publications. Whereas the first volume (SP532) concentrates on general aspects and a synthesis of the Ordovician geology of Europe, this volume (SP533) includes reviews of Ordovician successions of most other parts of the world. The classic successions of the Ordovician basins of North America are presented, as well as those of China where several of the Ordovician Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points are defined. The volume also includes syntheses of the Ordovician geology of Africa, South America, most regions of Asia from the Near to the Far East along with Central Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.

Book Middle to Late Ordovician delta 13C and 87Dr 86Sr Stratigraphy in Virginia and West Virginia

Download or read book Middle to Late Ordovician delta 13C and 87Dr 86Sr Stratigraphy in Virginia and West Virginia written by Nicholas Moehle Umholtz and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Knox unconformity represents a major break in Paleozoic carbonate deposition in the Appalachian Basin. The development of the angular unconformity has been attributed to both regional tectonism and eustasy. Better understanding the timing of the Knox unconformity allows for correlation to study areas outside of the Appalachian Basin, which may be used to elucidate the relative impact of these processes. Current biostratigraphic constraint on the timing and duration of the unconformity in the Virginia and West Virginia study area is based on a sparse fossil record and places the duration of the unconformity at around 10 mya. This study uses [delta]13C and 87Dr/86Sr chemostratigraphy to refine this timing through correlation to a more complete section farther north near the axis of the basin in Maryland. 87Dr/86Sr chemostratigraphy demonstrates that deposition resumed no later than 462 mya, in the Cahabagnathus. friendsvillensis conodont Zone, and refinement by [delta]13C correlation indicates that deposition likely ensued in the early part of this zone. 87Dr/86Sr chemostratigraphy in this study also establishes the maximum age for the uppermost preserved Knox Group strata (in this study area) at 473 mya, indicating a maximum possible duration of the Knox Unconformity in Virginia and West Virginia at 11 mya.

Download or read book The Ordovician Earth System written by Stanley Charles Finney and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Ordovician period is a significant chapter in Earth's history that included the great Mid-Ordovician biodiversification event, the Hirnantian glaciation, and long-term greenhouse conditions. Ordovician rocks are widespread on most continents and the recent finalization of a modern chronostratigraphic classification of the Ordovician system now facilitates high-resolution correlations that allow for integrated multidisciplinary research. The diverse papers comprising this volume address orogenesis, paleogeography, climate modeling, sedimentation, biodiversity, and isotopic excursions; together they promote an integrated view of the Ordovician earth system."--Publisher's description.
