Book Mathematical Methods

Download or read book Mathematical Methods written by Jacob Korevaar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Methods, Volume I: Linear Algebra, Normed Spaces, Distributions, Integration focuses on advanced mathematical tools used in applications and the basic concepts of algebra, normed spaces, integration, and distributions. The publication first offers information on algebraic theory of vector spaces and introduction to functional analysis. Discussions focus on linear transformations and functionals, rectangular matrices, systems of linear equations, eigenvalue problems, use of eigenvectors and generalized eigenvectors in the representation of linear operators, metric and normed vector spaces, and delta sequences and convergence and approximation. The text then examines the Lebesgue integral, including approximation of integrable functions and applications, integration of sequences and series, functions of bounded variation and the Stieltjes integral, and multiple integrals. Curves and integrals, holomorphic functions and integrals in the complex plane, and multiple integrals are also discussed. The book is a valuable reference for students in the physical sciences, mathematics students interested in applications, and mathematically oriented engineering students.

Book The Mathematics of Preference Choice and Order

Download or read book The Mathematics of Preference Choice and Order written by Steven Brams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Fishburn has had a splendidly productive career that led to path-breaking c- tributions in a remarkable variety of areas of research. His contributions have been published in a vast literature, ranging through journals of social choice and welfare, decision theory, operations research, economic theory, political science, mathema- cal psychology, and discrete mathematics. This work was done both on an individual basis and with a very long list of coauthors. The contributions that Fishburn made can roughly be divided into three major topical areas, and contributions to each of these areas are identi?ed by sections of this monograph. Section 1 deals with topics that are included in the general areas of utility, preference, individual choice, subjective probability, and measurement t- ory. Section 2 covers social choice theory, voting models, and social welfare. S- tion 3 deals with more purely mathematical topics that are related to combinatorics, graph theory, and ordered sets. The common theme of Fishburn’s contributions to all of these areas is his ability to bring rigorous mathematical analysis to bear on a wide range of dif?cult problems.

Book Integral Measure and Ordering

Download or read book Integral Measure and Ordering written by Beloslav Riecan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is a monograph including some recent results of mea sure and integration theory. It concerns three main ideas. The first idea deals with some ordering structures such as Riesz spaces and lattice or dered groups, and their relation to measure and integration theory. The second is the idea of fuzzy sets, quite new in general, and in measure theory particularly. The third area concerns some models of quantum mechanical systems. We study mainly models based on fuzzy set theory. Some recent results are systematically presented along with our suggestions for further development. The first chapter has an introductory character, where we present basic definitions and notations. Simultaneously, this chapter can be regarded as an elementary introduction to fuzzy set theory. Chapter 2 contains an original approach to the convergence of sequences of measurable functions. While the notion of a null set can be determined uniquely, the notion of a set of "small" measure has a fuzzy character. It is interesting that the notion of fuzzy set and the notion of a set of small measure (described mathematically by so-called small systems) were introduced independently at almost the same time. Although the axiomatic systems in both theories mentioned are quite different, we show that the notion of a small system can be considered from the point of view of fuzzy sets.

Book Stochastic Processes General Theory

Download or read book Stochastic Processes General Theory written by Malempati M. Rao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stochastic Processes: General Theory starts with the fundamental existence theorem of Kolmogorov, together with several of its extensions to stochastic processes. It treats the function theoretical aspects of processes and includes an extended account of martingales and their generalizations. Various compositions of (quasi- or semi-)martingales and their integrals are given. Here the Bochner boundedness principle plays a unifying role: a unique feature of the book. Applications to higher order stochastic differential equations and their special features are presented in detail. Stochastic processes in a manifold and multiparameter stochastic analysis are also discussed. Each of the seven chapters includes complements, exercises and extensive references: many avenues of research are suggested. The book is a completely revised and enlarged version of the author's Stochastic Processes and Integration (Noordhoff, 1979). The new title reflects the content and generality of the extensive amount of new material. Audience: Suitable as a text/reference for second year graduate classes and seminars. A knowledge of real analysis, including Lebesgue integration, is a prerequisite.

Book A Modern Theory of Random Variation

Download or read book A Modern Theory of Random Variation written by Patrick Muldowney and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking and practical treatment of probability and stochastic processes A Modern Theory of Random Variation is a new and radical re-formulation of the mathematical underpinnings of subjects as diverse as investment, communication engineering, and quantum mechanics. Setting aside the classical theory of probability measure spaces, the book utilizes a mathematically rigorous version of the theory of random variation that bases itself exclusively on finitely additive probability distribution functions. In place of twentieth century Lebesgue integration and measure theory, the author uses the simpler concept of Riemann sums, and the non-absolute Riemann-type integration of Henstock. Readers are supplied with an accessible approach to standard elements of probability theory such as the central limmit theorem and Brownian motion as well as remarkable, new results on Feynman diagrams and stochastic integrals. Throughout the book, detailed numerical demonstrations accompany the discussions of abstract mathematical theory, from the simplest elements of the subject to the most complex. In addition, an array of numerical examples and vivid illustrations showcase how the presented methods and applications can be undertaken at various levels of complexity. A Modern Theory of Random Variation is a suitable book for courses on mathematical analysis, probability theory, and mathematical finance at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. The book is also an indispensible resource for researchers and practitioners who are seeking new concepts, techniques and methodologies in data analysis, numerical calculation, and financial asset valuation. Patrick Muldowney, PhD, served as lecturer at the Magee Business School of the UNiversity of Ulster for over twenty years. Dr. Muldowney has published extensively in his areas of research, including integration theory, financial mathematics, and random variation.

Book Sets and integration An outline of the development

Download or read book Sets and integration An outline of the development written by D. van Dalen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present text resulted from lectures given by the authors at the Rijks Universiteit at Utrecht. These lectures were part of a series on 'History of Contemporary Mathematics'. The need for such an enterprise was generally felt, since the curriculum at many universities is designed to suit an efficient treatment of advanced subjects rather than to reflect the development of notions and techniques. As it is very likely that this trend will continue, we decided to offer lectures of a less technical nature to provide students and interested listeners with a survey of the history of topics in our present-day mathematics. We consider it very useful for a mathematician to have an acquaintance with the history of the development of his subject, especially in the nineteenth century where the germs of many of modern disciplines can be found. Our attention has therefore been mainly directed to relatively young developments. In the lectures we tried to stay clear of both oversimplification and extreme technicality. The result is a text, that should not cause difficulties to a reader with a working knowledge of mathematics. The developments sketched in this book are fundamental for many areas in mathematics and the notions considered are crucial almost everywhere. The book may be most useful, in particular, for those teaching mathematics.

Book A Riemann Type Integral that Includes Lebesgue Stieltjes Bochner and Stochastic Integrals

Download or read book A Riemann Type Integral that Includes Lebesgue Stieltjes Bochner and Stochastic Integrals written by Edward James McShane and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1969 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the difficulties with integration theory is that there are so many different detailed definitions that the non-expert is confused about their relative strengths and usefulness. A surprising recent development in the theory of integration has been the discovery that suitable modifications to the Riemann definition using approximating sums can produce a wide variety of different integrals including integrals of great power.
